Its kind of sad that your video is one of the very few actually talking about this console and its software. So thank you! It seems like the higher end mixers get, the lesser information you get out in the open.
yeah ! Thank-you .. I find it baffling how even on the Black Magic site, the videos are all mouse based tutorials. Glad you like the video, I'll be doing more. :)
Your demo is reminding me of why Fairlight was a great DAW all the way back to the MFX. Much of the navigation, editing and key sequences derive from the MFX.
Personally, I learned editing and mixing on tape & mag by reel rocking and listening. It's how it was done in the edit bay and on the dubbing stage. Moving over to the NED Post Pro and Fairlight MFX, this was the same - only better. Editing and mixing by listening and looking at what matters. The other leading daw just can't do this very well in my experience, even now. Working in Resolve Fairlight by scrubbing audio with a waveform and video all in sync right down to the frame & sample is vastly better and faster than just poking around with one finger and then having to check to see if you poked it right... Fairlight rules.
One of the most exciting things is fairlight is available for free in davinchi resolve. So if this does break into the industry, it will really lower the barrier for entry for freelancers just starting out.
I have stopped paying 24k a year for Adobe products and stopped using Premiere entirely. Davinci Resolve's program has turned me from armature to professional editor and colorist. It took three years but time well spent. What I love is the ability to edit data and enter expressions instead of relying on Adobe's GUI. It makes the work more precise and efficient. I'm not an audio tech on this level but
Yes ! I'm amazed that there's zero tutorials and only a few industry videos about the EVO.. Also, even the Black Magic videos don't seem to cover their hardware with tutorials.. odd ! Even the iPad Resolve features have only been discovered seemingly by accident.. more odder-er.
The Black Magic version supports editing, but I believe the keyboard reverts back to a regular keyboard layout.. for now.. The EVO can take xml exports from FCPx perfectly, even the roles come across, sound fx.. everything.works like a champ.

Hello Chris this is Floox! just stumbled into your video, how incredible! I love Resolve in general, using it for all my clients projects for color grading and video editing and personal projects as well, but I love to have the chance of using fairlight to work on dialogues and sound designs without switching programs! Great video mate and love to hear from you very soon! ^^
I mainly use Da Vinci resolve for my video editing and color grading, but i was so happy to have a DAW like fairlight inside it, i can use my Arturia and my reason studio DAW as a VST module inside it with the video sync, it's crazy, how well integrated the 3 software, da vinci, fusion and fairlight work together it's a creative army knife.
well it is not a full daw allthough it has some daw functions but i personaly hope they will turn the enite things into a DVE-DAW-DVE so that noone needs two things for the same task. i had this some one year ago : i made a track then i needed a video now i had to go over to davinci with the audiotrack and now i needed to kinda match the video i wanted to the audiotrack. if DR18 had a fully daw vapable fairight, i would not need all those steps but i could do both things in one place and simultane. this is why i suggest them to program fairlight so that you can do all things you can on a daw : midi, vst , instrument recording vocals , mastering of the audio and then at the same time in the same process you produce the video both at the same time : i tell you noone would need protools or cakewalk sonar nor bitwig nor none of them but only one single program that is a fully fleged DVE and a fully flegded DAW at the same time ! BMD : i tell you huys that would be a totoal revulution in audio and video production if you only would take my suggestion seriouse ! you would outrun all of them and who would need to have two seperate programs for two seperate media when one can have one single programe for both ! Black Magic Design : i tell you you can ignite the revulution and you truely allready have the very base for doing so so please take the DVE to the DAW and the DAW to the DVE
Been using Da Vinci for a while now for video editing and it's really powerful (esp once you get into Fusion). Not yet explored the audio facilities as I like working with Ableton Live more, for its workflow. But this is a really cool demo of Blackmagic's hardware! 😲 Great video!
Hello Cris and thank you for this video, which reminds me of the "Constallation" model (installed by Joe Hammer, whom I salute and thank for all his help) that we used to own and have since migrated to NUENDO following the takeover by Black Magic Design. I loved the listening quality of the "JOG" for audio editing, which I've never been able to find on any DAW (Nuendo, protools,..). Do you think this "JOG" quality is still present on Black Magic Design's new Fairlight Advanced Consoles? Are these new consoles as complete as your EVO model ? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Thankyou for your reply. I am happy to report that the jog functionality and lovely smooth sound is maintained in the EVO and also the Black Magic version on the desktop and advanced consoles !
I already use it for VFX compositing, editing and Grading and all of my mixing I do in Fairlight. So bring it in! One software to rule them all. But I need a new apartment to have space for this mixing desk! That’s workflow heaven, mate!
There is the (Xynergi) Desktop Controller version which will give you all the Editing Control functionality shown, your FairlightAU/Resolve rig doesn't _have_ to be it's own standalone piece of furniture!
@@CrisBlyth Nice! I still use Cubase and FL Studio for MIDI. Something new to learn! And yeah, their workflows are so streamlined and integrate very well.
Hey Cris! I've just stumbled onto you channel! So nice to see you In your element! Love the video and clear demonstration. Reminds me of editing BetaCam with the BVE900, never needed a mouse there even (actually there never was one). Control surfaces are 1000 times faster than the mouse and Blackmagic have brought that tactile, linear, instinct and gut feeling style of post production back, the way is should be in my opinion.
Ayaz !! I miss you brother ! and of course you popped up as I was thinking about everything in Kenya recently. I hope all is well with you. Any chance of you visiting us ?
For what it's worth, I've completely moved by VO and audiobook production to Fairlight within DaVinci Resolve, which is odd... I create timelines with zero videos and it works beautifully with the wheel on the Speed Editor.
@@JeffKellyMedia The key here since I edit video more than audio, my muscle memory is so used to moving around the timeline in DaVinci that I simply didn't want to learn to navigate in another program. When you factor in the wheel and the fact that you aren't giving anything up as far as quality seals the deal for me. Although traditional DAWs have more options, most of the stuff we miss out on are for music.
@@JeffKellyMedia the speed editor is great if you go for an all in approach and try to use it as as much as possible it will become faster and faster. However, I do find some keys are missing and often urine for the larger keyboard, but it’s a little pricey.
@@AskJoeI’m happy that my thoughts, match your action. I was thinking why should I learn a new DAW for audio, when I’ve got all this right here in DR. I really only have time to get really good at one system at my age or any age. Switching around will just slow me down and I’ll never get really good at anything. I’m going all in with Resolve. Plus now that it’s on IPad too, I’ve got to commit to one system and call it a day. You guys have been so helpful with your comments and video’s
Would be great for Blackmagic to add MIDI Tracks to Resolve not just for synths/instruments but also to record automation when using external VSTs. The Fairlight hardware is pretty cool but still a bit to pricey for most people to take advantage of. Very informative video to see the EVO system.
Yes, there's quite a few things that ARE working on EVO that have yet to be implemented in Resolve, however, those guys are AMAZING at putting out updates !
Having had to endure Pro Tools for decades I would be happy to see the back of it for good. Most of the studios where I work have ditched it, unless the client insists (most don't), and that's fine with me. To me almost anything is preferable, and there are free (Cakewalk), nearly free (Reaper) and paid (Cubase) options that I prefer. The only exception for me is Logic - that's almost as bad as Pro Tools, and in some ways worse. These days moving projects between DAWs is relatively simple, so folks can choose what they like to work with and hand it over for mixing/mastering.
I agree regarding protools .. so many people have invested a lot of money over the years, and are now not happy with Avid’s choices.. btw in the next video Midi and VST’s coming up :)
Wanna hear something funny? In the last days of FairlightAU, the EVO system was regularly demonstrated with an instance of PT running simultaneously as a _plugin_ within the EVO/POST DAW host... ;-) (ASIO multichannel bridge FTW!)... the EVO/Xynergi controller keys even changed to "PT mode" when the PT instance had-focus... 😉
@@profklyzlr WHATT ! :) I did not know that at all !!! oh my.. that's an interesting idea.. However, I like the midi note editing in Evo, it's super simple, fun too ! my brain does wonder if Black Magic will reinstate the midi options ? hmmmmmm :)
Nice work Cris as usual! Loved installing and drivng these back in the day. Awesome console. Using Resolve "Studio" for video work (Grading and Fusion) + Fairlight page sometimes due to the similar Fairlight editing model. I haven't worked on the new BMD surfaces. No Pro-tools for me ... I'm allergic 🤣 I now use mainly Nuendo 12, Logic Pro, and of course - Reaper, as I can customise it to my hearts content.
@@CrisBlyth 👋 Yes ... it's is well needed. P.S. you should get AirPan up and running on this EVO (LeapMotion controller) if the newer model still works! 😀
Excellent stuff Cris. I had no idea there was a free to try option. Is this the same machine you showed running CMI on Kents show a little while back? If so, is that part of Resolve or the hardware? That would kinda make the MAME project redundant. Thanks for another great upload.
ahh this is a different machine :) This one has no connection to the CMI. This version is basically what Black Magic bought and they’ve upgraded and integrated into resolve. but the underpinnings are all very EVO :) Also, I believe you can attach various different control surfaces to Resolve18 although their own desktop solutions are really lovely too
Chris: I want to first of say to you that I now know how the 49er’s felt when they journeyed to California and found “…Gold in them thar hills”. This video could not have come at a better time for me. My PT 12.6 program (that had been running on a long in the tooth Mac Pro) started giving some problems a few months back and finally “gave up the ghost”. I was seriously looking at Studio One and their 32S work desk. However, after seeing your video, I will now be going BM all the way. I have three questions. One is, what would be a “guesstimate” on the cost for setup that you have in the video? Two, I ask you not to take offense but can I perform a Vulcan Mind Meld on you? I need your knowledge.🖖 Lastly, will you be doing a video on how all of the Fairlight DAW functions interface with Resolve’s video editing, color grading and fusion? Again, what a timely and GREAT video. Thank you.
Hello Toney ! I'm glad you liked the video ! Now to start off, my EVO system does seem to have things that the current Resolve doesn't have YET.. Like full midi note and VST instrument support. Now, it CAN record VST instruments, and they've JUST included a measures and bars / beats display on the timeline (which as it happens is REALLLY similar to what's on the EVO, so I wonder if they just dusted off the code and re implemented it. However, my feeling is that Resolve WILL get these updates. Also, if you are recording bands and don't need midi then Resolve RIGHT NOW is really great. Everything on the desk is modular and can also be accessed through software, so you could purchase a desk with the minimal parts and fill it up over time. I believe the desk in this configuration (inducing monitors, control surfaces, faders etc) is around $30K. So, to your last question. I will be doing a video showing Resolve and it's other parts, however, the EVO doesn't run the complete resolve. Resolve encapsulates the 'Fairlight EVO' system on their 'Fairlight' page. However, it does seem that I can export from resolve to EVO to do the audio part. So, I'll be investigating this. I just finished recording my daughters newest EP, and I'm SO thrilled by how it all turned out. Working on this system is SUCH a joy to use.
Interesting video, Cris. Congratulations for your new gear. As a composer I'm not realy in the target of this, nor in the PT target, I need MIDI, but the layout of this product seems definitely interesting. What is the plugin format? VST, VST3, AAX? How is their management?
The original FairlightAU EVO had MIDI integration right in the timeline (required the "Plus Pack" license option), with any given track (out of 256 on a standard license) being capable of being set as a "MIDI Track" at the drop of a hat. Plugins on Windows were VST3 64-bit. Resolve is cross-platform, so unsure about plugin handling on various platforms, but Resolve on Windows 7 or 10 should handle VST3 64-bit. That said, Resolve comes with it's own set of quite-usable Plugins for Reverb/etc, and the Fairlight mixer has full realtime 7-band EQ and compressor/gate on every channel _built-in_...
@@CrisBlyth They do? When i asked Blackmagic a few years ago at a convention if they would bring Midi back they said they had no plan to do this at all. I don't think they did. I have never seen it in any Resolve version i came across so far and i can't find any information about it online either.
@@UseYourBrain930 Correct, right now Resolve doesn’t support midi tracks like the EVO, but you can load a regular VST like omnisphere and it’ll see a midi keyboard connected and you can record the OUTPUT of the VST onto a track. So they’ve re implemented one part of it.. It doesn’t seem too much of a leap for them to introduce midi.
@@CrisBlyth So the EVO you are presenting is running a different software than Resolve that does Midi tracks as well? Sad that Blackmagic is not selling them anymore. Without a sequencer Resolve is no DAW.
With all this wonderful usability, I wonder if it can be modded to output the sound of Cris saying "bonk" every time you press the enter key. Joking aside, really inspiring video and resonates with me and the challenges I find with the production process.
Not sue if you covered this, but being able to select a range (or individual clips using CTRL) then picking the whole lot up from a specific point, then pasting / copying to anywhere else or to different tracks, with sample accuracy, is quick , easy, straightforward and allows you to take the rest of the day off. I regularly demo and train freelancers and they're up and running within 2 hours.
Fairlight looks great - for mixing and tracking. However, if you are doing electronic music with MIDI, there is none. I have Fairlight 17 Studio but, I can't afford the panels and my primary use for Fairlight would be for making electronic music. So, for now, I will be sticking with Presonus Studio 1 5.5 and Reason Studio 12. I do love Resolve for video and FX though. I really would love to see full MIDI sequencing added to it.
well here’s the thing.. (and I’ll be showing in another episode) the EVO supports midi, Vst and VST instruments :) .. Now, that code is somewhere .. and resolve 18 can see midi keyboards attached.. so it’s not a flying leap to ‘switch on’ the midi note editing etc .. I’ll post that soon :)
@@CrisBlyth That would be pretty cool. Right now, when I try to load an instrument, it crashes Resolve, presumably because Fairlight does not have the hooks it needs to load a VST instrument therefore, hangs on loading it resulting in a crash. Beyond that, they would have to add a full MIDI sequencer to Fairlight with all of the bells and whistles in order to make it into a full DAW.
@@JKVisFX Hi Jeff, make sure you are using a 64bit VST3 on Resolve.. also, I’ll be posting a video soon showing the MIDI capabilities on the Fairlight. :)
@@JKVisFX Hi Jeff, here’s a video with someone using VSTs in Resolve. However, in this way it records the audio, but not the midi. th-cam.com/video/bSRBN1ch7Sw/w-d-xo.html I’ll show you he midi implementation on the EVO next.
Excellent video!! as Anneke below has said, this is one if not the only channel to showcase the Fairlight hardware and software integration. I realize the Fairlight design priority is post production but I think it is an extremely strong application for tracking and mixing also. I do have a question about the interface, that being the audio input interface.....from what i can tell fairlight only accepts audio from the fairlight madi accelerator card which mean madi only from a device such as RME MADI XT feeding into the fairlight card. Is that your understanding?
Hello ! and thank you, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. With the Fairlight EVO it is limited to working through their hardware. However with Resolve I don’t believe there is this limitation at all. There is an option but I don’t believe it is a requirement at all. However, that’s going to make me go out and find out for sure ! cheers !
Curious to hear your point of view where Fairlight can still improve. I'm not doing music, but I can imagine that you might be missing some midi sequencing and support for tempo/bars. I use fairlight for my surround mixes of short films and television work and the only real thing that was a downside for me was the availability of the hardware. I wasn't able to order the Desktop console anywhere so in the end I gave up and bought a Behringer X-touch, which works but it's missing many features. But yeah I've moved that work from Logic Pro completely over to Fairlight and it's great.
Great to hear that you’re having a good experience with Resolve. The Evo Does support bars and measures and metronome etc.. and can sync to anything . it does tempo tap and all the normal stuff. I’ll be putting a video up about this too !
@@CrisBlyth That's interesting, because within the regular interface within resolve there is no such feature. I was always under the assumption that the consoles were basically just a control surface for whatever you could do with the keyboard and mouse (but faster and more convenient). Learned something haha. Looking forward to your video :). EDIT: wait I now realized that EVO might be from before it was integrated into resolve? Or are you running a recent resolve in the background? Because if you aren't, that might explain the differences.
That would be Awesome! We recently installed a 5 bay Fairlight console at the Studio and there are not a lot of vidoes on the actual Fairlight console operation.
@@cinematicmusicproductiondotcom oh wow ! lucky you ! You’re right there’s a gap there.. no videos that deal with the hardware.. I’d like to remedy that
I’m curious: as this is the Evo, which I think was released before BMD bought Fairlight... Could you pair it with a modern Resolve install and still have the panels supported within Resolve? (I wonder how far the panel support goes?)
whist the panels were supposed to be compatible with Resolve 14(?) Compatibility was dropped as they updated the physical panels. whilst the new panels look very similar, internally they have been updated significantly. However the concepts of the control surface interaction is VERY similar. I have successfully exported an XML session out of Resolve18 and into EVO and it was all good :)
Ah classic fairlight it's good to see where they came from & how the UI has changed, I see some people in the comments talking about fairlight midi tracks not being supported in resolve & I agree it sucks, at that 18.1 has music grid support so maby they might finally get arround to adding it back in, I think I get the reason why they didn't add it tho it kind of detracks from resolve being the ultimate onlineing tool so logically it dosen't make sence as a music daw as its a mastering daw but maby just maby times be a chageing and it will be doing both eventually 🤔🤔 😉, What else would you like fairlight to do just interested 🤔🤔
@@CrisBlyth Fusion compete directly with nuke tho, so I'd personally say that a tad unlikely but I would love USD,3rd party render engine support + UE plugin mainly because that will achieve the same thing, I do wonder if nuke has a patent on exr shuffle nodes tho hence why it's not part of fusion (& maby hope bmd can expand the number of exr channels)
@@mariotriforce I agree, it's probably very unlikely, but would say that Nuke is in a totally different price category, so I feel they don't compete in reality, and I know companies that are already writing plugins to do so, much like people did for 'motion' for FCPx (which is crazy that it's not native!), but it would be good to see it natively - However I agree with you.. prolly never gonna happen ! :)
@@CrisBlyth indeedity one can dream but apperently real time compositing is becoming a thing so maby bmd can edge themselves in that direction along with opening up fusion more 🤔🤔
As a longtime DAW user of various varieties, looking at this it's as if Pro Tools and a young Cubase had a baby together. I suspect it's early days for Resolve, but the DAW market appears to be ever expanding.
As the Fairlight tab in Resolve was based on the Fairlight EVO, which you probably know was a very robust system, it's in Black Magic's hands whether they fully exploit what the EVO could do and bring it into Resolve... heres' hoping... (y'know.. VTSi support, Midi editing etc.. :) )
@@CrisBlyth it's always surprised me that Black Magic haven't exploited the Fairlight tech more in this market. Same goes for some of the other music-related things they've bought up but just have seemingly sat upon.
DAWs were successfully recording and editing audio decades before Protools and Media Composer came along and messed it all up. Davinci represents the integration that Digidesign / Avid have never delivered.
It's really quite amazing what you get in the free version... but as you might imagine, the real magic is when you are using both hands on a control surface, then the system really comes to a new level. :)
So, at the moment, the midi implementation is only on the EVO Fairlight software, not in V18 of the normal resolve software. However, I am seeing potential clues that they are going to add it back in. Like seeing the tempo for bears and measures, which looks almost identical to the implementation on EVO. I’ve done another video which shows this.. I’ll add a link :)
Not sure how I feel about this. The Fairlight inside davinci sucked donkey balls. Constant glitches, random bugs with audio changes (random phasing, clicks, etc). I don't care how flashy it is, I want stable sound.
you are correct; it did suck multiple donkeys balls in the early days and wasn’t a patch on the stability of the EVO system, however it has developed in leaps and bounds over the next few versions. It’s not perfect and I feel they’ve been concentrating more on ‘mouse’ users, but stability wise it’s not a concern now (V18)
More then 4000 Euri for this controller? Can I find the Resolve to spend that? Nope! I see the advantages of the ergonomics but everything else you do reminds me of the workflow of my trusted old Roland VS2480. By the way: As far as the RSI aspects are concerned I always use a tablet (call it a Fairlight lightpen without the cable hassle if you want.). Would I want one? If I'd earn it all back and still generate a good income I very well might. Without the economic argument buying something new every time there is a slight technological improvement is akin to feeding your inner addiction. The evil Protools boys (etc.) know that and use that as a marketing tool.
yeah the controller is expensive but the large Pro Tools desks are very expensive and many of them are now bricked due to software updates. I TOTALLY agree about using a pen. When editing I only use a pen and a vertical mouse if I really need to. Also, I have an old roland VS1680 and it was really nimble to work also ! - fun times :) thanks for your comment !
Nice demo - though I think it's rather simplistic being "pretend" - but I have a bigger question !~~! (I've got my ears on.) If you were to prioritize your purchase for a gradual investment - in other words could you with your next video discuss generally what you would buy first and why? And the reason is that thing is taking up as much space as the first minicomputer and costs as much. What can you do with a $2,500 budget, $5,000, etc. And what is really kind of upper-middle-class excess? Are you having fun - yes. But do you really need all that gear to have 85% of it?
Hi ! The good thing is the newest version of resolve can address the standard HUI emulation, so you can use the control surfaces of your choice. However, I feel that this center part, the 'editor' would be my first choice, but it IS pricy. There is a 'desktop editor' that has faders built in, but nothing really comes close to all these addressable keys. The combination of hardware and software really works well here.
@@CrisBlyth Yeah I think I figured this out. It's a business model similar to premium subscriptions that is based on capitalized businesses, that are getting money at 14x the rate that they can earn it. So the markup is about 10x cost instead of more usual 4x. There's no other choice - and it's something long practiced in the media production business for that reason. Which means that for non-capitalized businesses you are way better off using a mouse - unless you've got serious production aspirations and a lot of cash you didn't have to earn. Consumer credit just doesn't support that, and line of credit on Real Estate is shutting the door as well.
As a professional user, Fairlight was a straightforward choice. It is rock solid, reliable, doesn't require constant updating, uses windows platform that enables server integration and file indexing, allows user profile management, loads all available plugin formats, imports and exports from / to every broadcast format, wonderful audiobase / soundeffects database, incredibly fast operation, stunning , accurate operation, EQ, DYNAMICS, AUDIO FX as standard, Metering, and after 20 years in use, still incredible . Currently investing in Fairlight Hardware panels to replace /avoid further dissapointing efforts from ' Rabid - Blow Ghouls' .
I'm running Logic and both are 'listening' and transmitting MMC & SMPTE from the EVO, so I can play, rewind and scrub from either machine. I'll be pumping the channels via Madi from the Mac soon. This reduces the need for someone to always dump stems or tracks to me.
oooh.. that's a good one.. and yes. I feel they are doing chess moves that people don't see until it's too late. their eco system is only gaining in stability and features. :)
@@CrisBlyth Resolve and yes I do. I mainly use Izotope / Fab filter and Waves and never had an issue. I came from Cubase so was a bit of a learning curve but i work more with video so its nice to just be in one spot. Nuendo is far too expensive considering what we get for free in Resolve.
I have been working around an issue of using Audacity to record (I know, I know) and Resolve to do what little editing I have to do. Seems a "Resolve-Exclusive" workflow may be more than feasible for me.
The Fairlight page once fully explored is really amazing and feature packed. I fee it's sometimes easier to see its possibilities once a full project is there on screen, without that it's tricky to know what it can do.
@@BurninSven1 Well, there’s a FREE version of Resolve that has 90% of the paid version. Also, Protools and Logic also have control surfaces that cost money, if you want them. However you can still use this amazing software with a mouse. Also, Black magic offer multiple lower cost entry points for Fairlight control surfaces, There’s a really good desktop version.
I agree, and I hope that Black Magic re-instate the MIDI and VST capabilities that are laying dormant in the Fairlight code. This EVO console does have MIDI, and the bars/beats that Black magic have recently introduced show that they are re-using existing code. I think it's a very exciting prospect, knowing that there's an internal structure that supports MIDI.
@@CrisBlyth To use 4 or six finger short cuts you do not use your intuition for the creative flow. You use it for the system. So no contact with words, strings and pianokeys or drumhead... harp .... whatever your instrument may be. We are back at recording sessions occupied by musicians themselves. These shortcuts take a long time to learn. I think the sample system you are restoring IS intuitive for those wizards that want to go there. But for mixing we need more single duty knobs and faders. My humble opinion.
@@01jeffb I think 🤔 we are past all that considering the general effort from early tapedecks to more than 30 year of computer recording effort.

GOODNESS !!!! Floox!!!!! So lovely to hear from you ! YEs, it seems that there's lots of good things the Resolve team is doing ! Where are you ? :)
I feel with the newest changes in the Resolve interface, that we're not far away from MIDI implementation.
well it is not a full daw allthough it has some daw functions but i personaly hope they will turn the enite things into a DVE-DAW-DVE so that noone needs two things for the same task. i had this some one year ago : i made a track then i needed a video now i had to go over to davinci with the audiotrack and now i needed to kinda match the video i wanted to the audiotrack. if DR18 had a fully daw vapable fairight, i would not need all those steps but i could do both things in one place and simultane. this is why i suggest them to program fairlight so that you can do all things you can on a daw : midi, vst , instrument recording vocals , mastering of the audio and then at the same time in the same process you produce the video both at the same time : i tell you noone would need protools or cakewalk sonar nor bitwig nor none of them but only one single program that is a fully fleged DVE and a fully flegded DAW at the same time !
Great Video as always Cris! Boo Hiss My Xynergi keyboard is not supported. BTW The multiband and the limiter are top class! Great for mastering :D
your keyboard isn’t supported ? what version are you using ? :) yeah the dynamics are damn good :) hope you’re well mate !
Yeah, what Cris said. Xynergie not supported? crumbs.
Been using Da Vinci for a while now for video editing and it's really powerful (esp once you get into Fusion). Not yet explored the audio facilities as I like working with Ableton Live more, for its workflow. But this is a really cool demo of Blackmagic's hardware! 😲 Great video!
It's slowly becoming an incredible solution for so many reasons.. :)
Hello Cris
and thank you for this video, which reminds me of the "Constallation" model (installed by Joe Hammer, whom I salute and thank for all his help) that we used to own and have since migrated to NUENDO following the takeover by Black Magic Design.
That’s workflow heaven, mate!
exactly.. I really like the workflow, and the sharing of tasks.. :) look out for the next video where I show MIDI etc... :)
There is the (Xynergi) Desktop Controller version which will give you all the Editing Control functionality shown, your FairlightAU/Resolve rig doesn't _have_ to be it's own standalone piece of furniture!
@@profklyzlr Thanks! I saw it, it's cool!
What a great application for the Fairlight page ! It's clear you are thinking in a creative way. good stuff !
Ask Joe. I’m thinking of doing same thing for VO. I have speed editor also. How does this work to keep it simple and fast
I completely agree.. automation for anything really ! :)
Yes! Even replacing audio drama special tools too.
They seem to have added a chunk of new tools in the newest 18.5 update ! great stuff !!
Unique. Great video. Using Fairlight a lot. Now also hoping it gets a midi clock so things like Output can get BPM from DAW.
Yes, there's quite a few things that ARE working on EVO that have yet to be implemented in Resolve, however, those guys are AMAZING at putting out updates !
Thanks Chris. I'm not in the industry at all but this was really interesting (and well produced).
thanks ! I'm looking forward to making more videos about this amazing machine.. still figuring out if I should have a second channel or not... hmm.
I'm allergic 🤣 I now use mainly Nuendo 12, Logic Pro, and of course - Reaper, as I can customise it to my hearts content.
hey Joe ! lovely to see your comment ! yes it’s interesting times.. I’d like to see if BMD incorporate Midi etc :)
@@CrisBlyth 👋 Yes ... it's is well needed. P.S. you should get AirPan up and running on this EVO (LeapMotion controller) if the newer model still works! 😀
@@HammerUncleJoe ooh yeah ! I might have to ask the benevolent Mr Steve Rance !

This version is basically what Black Magic bought and they’ve upgraded and integrated into resolve. but the underpinnings are all very EVO :)
Also, I believe you can attach various different control surfaces to Resolve18 although their own desktop solutions are really lovely too
Nice setup!
I used vertical mouse (with custom macro buttons) when i worked on commercial radio, my hand was happy😎
I'm using a vertical mouse right now ! :)
Great tutorial ! Does it have delay compensation?
yes, it’s naturally a really low latency setup, but I believe it does
Good vid sir. I've been doing more and more audio in Fairlight.
It really is amazing.. getting better all the time
Chris: I want to first of say to you that I now know how the 49er’s felt when they journeyed to California and found “…Gold in them thar hills”.
Ah! This is what you were talking about. That’s a beast!
YES ! IT really is amazing, and I baffled that more people don't know about its power :)
That said, Resolve comes with it's own set of quite-usable Plugins for Reverb/etc, and the Fairlight mixer has full realtime 7-band EQ and compressor/gate on every channel _built-in_...
profklyzlr already said it but yes, the EVO does support MIDI, note editing, everything. I'll show this in another video :)
Hi, did you understand how to use their ican software ?
I hope you can continue making videos on this console 😉
I only used it a little, and it wasn't me, but someone who already knew the software. For me, it looked good but seemed to have a few quirks !
mmm very interesting, as a mostly ex pro tools user this somewhat excites me.

@@CrisBlyth on it!
With all this wonderful usability, I wonder if it can be modded to output the sound of Cris saying "bonk" every time you press the enter key. Joking aside, really inspiring video and resonates with me and the challenges I find with the production process.
hehehe there was a few ‘BOOP!’s also :)
I love demoing the EVO, with the control surface it's such a different experience.

Cubase, Logic, DAR, Fairlight, SSL, Neve , Massenburg, then ..........Protools. One Huge investment plan, One giant leap (backwards ) for Audio.
yeah.. I'm sticking to Fairlight.. with all the recent stuff, I'm seeing the shift I expected.
I ditched ProTools back at version 9 for Logic Pro.
yeah, I still use Logic in my other room where the Fairlight CMI is. :)
However, that’s going to make me go out and find out for sure ! cheers !
works with any audio interface.
Thank you for making this video. It was very informative
I'll be making more Fairlight EVO videos soon !

@@CrisBlyth Just watched it thanks Chris. Another question as far as audio I/O goes i assume its not on that desk but in a standard audio interface.
It does support VST, so you could use Kontakt. UNFORTUNATELY It does not support MIDI
Ah classic fairlight it's good to see where they came from & how the UI has changed, I see some people in the comments talking about fairlight midi tracks not being supported in resolve & I agree it sucks, at that 18.1 has music grid support so maby they might finally get arround to adding it back in, I think I get the reason why they didn't add it tho it kind of detracks from resolve being the ultimate onlineing tool so logically it dosen't make sence as a music daw as its a mastering daw but maby just maby times be a chageing and it will be doing both eventually 🤔🤔 😉,
What else would you like fairlight to do just interested 🤔🤔
Oh, I would love 'send to Nuke', 'sync with Nuke', 'send to Maya/C4d/Blender'. I want to have ONE hub. :)
Does it come with the panner joystick
It does.. it also has a 'leap' 3D panner :)
As someone who did video work after 8 years of strictly audio, fair light is an easy free alternative with all the essentials for a daw
It's really quite amazing what you get in the free version... but as you might imagine, the real magic is when you are using both hands on a control surface, then the system really comes to a new level. :)
Okay okay. But where is the pianoroll editor in fairlight? 😅

I just liked, and subscribed! As you just saved me! How? Tell ya at a later time... :)
I'd love to hear more !!!
Nice demo - though I think it's rather simplistic being "pretend" - but I have a bigger question !~~! (I've got my ears on.)
If you were to prioritize your purchase for a gradual investment - in other words could you with your next video discuss generally what you would buy first and why?
This really makes me want to dump Pro Tools. I definitely will try fairlight !
I'm running Logic and both are 'listening' and transmitting MMC & SMPTE from the EVO, so I can play, rewind and scrub from either machine. I'll be pumping the channels via Madi from the Mac soon. This reduces the need for someone to always dump stems or tracks to me.
Is blackmagic the Darth Vader of emagic
oooh.. that's a good one.. and yes. I feel they are doing chess moves that people don't see until it's too late. their eco system is only gaining in stability and features. :)

Plot Twist: It already is my DAW
oh resolve or EVO ? if resolve do you use VST’s ?
And it will cost you an arm and a leg and a whole lot more.
@@BurninSven1 Well, there’s a FREE version of Resolve that has 90% of the paid version. Also, Protools and Logic also have control surfaces that cost money, if you want them. Fairlight is fantastic, but until it incorporates MIDI, it can not claim to be a legit DAW.
