- The world's largest production aircraft needs a lot of wheels to support its max takeoff and landing weights of around 600 tonnes and 400 tonnes respectively.
It's almost like visual music watching the complex movements of the undercarriage/landing gear as it neatly folds away or absorbs huge landing punishment.

The plane is made that big just so it has enough space to carry all those wheels

Watching the wheels burn rubber on landing reminds me of what I learned a few days ago watching a documentary on operations at Atlanta International airport. Planes shed so much rubber when landing that at ATL one person's job consists of patrolling the runways in a special car which has a fifth wheel which, when lowered, tests resistance of the runway to the wheel in relation to the buildup of rubber from plane tires. When the instruments reach a certain level of slickness, machinery is used to scrub excess rubber buildup from the runways. The amount of rubber laid down by landing planes at ATL quoted in the documentary was a large amount every day. I just searched and found a paper on technology to remove this rubber build up. That paper includes this statement: "An average landing leaves as much as 1.4 lb (700 g) of rubber in a thin layer on the runway. To make matters worse, the heat generated during the interaction causes a chemical reaction called polymerization that changes the rubber deposits into a hard, smooth material. " Given a daily count of over a 1,000 landings a day at Atlanta, that is about 3/4 of a ton of rubber laid down every day!
Fascinating - thanks for the info. Checking out aerial imagery of runways on Google Maps etc shows the dark 'rubberized' area in the touchdown zones.

was going to go last weekend to show my son the A380 landing and taking off. I went on 2 last month and the month before and he has gone nuts for them. he wants on for his P3d and FSX. I've already got him the A380 on infinite flight for android.

One thing I have often wondered : what's the use of tilting the main gear bogies this way, with the front wheels touching the ground first, rather than the aft ones like on many other aircraft ?
