Hey Beth! Did you know that this track was recorded live at Prince and the band's first live performance of the song ever, at the First Avenue club in Minneapolis? Strings and a few overdubs were done, but the lion's share of Prince's lead vocal and guitar work were taken directly from that show! Astonishing.
I met Prince at Tower Records when his first album came out. I was the cassette buyer for the store. Only reason I recognized him. He was there to see his record in the stacks. Nice friendly guy. I went and saw him when Little Red Corvette came out. I not only discovered he could play guitar, but he was Hendrix like in his abilities. I was the only person who recognized him in the store, he was that unknown. His first album, WB wanted him to be a traditional r&b singer (ala Teddy Pendergrass), and it did pretty well, but Prince did not want to be that traditional singer and soon he was producing his own stuff.
I was very lucky to see him live at Rock over Germany in 1995, maybe 5 metres from the stage. He seemed so surprisingly small and fragile when he entered the stage and he seemed so big and indestructible when he left the stage after the concert. A true legend.
The greatest solo artist... dancer, super singer, composer, song writer, multy instrumentalist, and you're right, such a feeling... I got emotional... wooooow 🤗
Us Minnesotans are very proud of him. My Dad was the one who showed me some of his songs when I was learning about music. Sometimes It Snows In April is my favorite track of Prince's.
Great reaction Beth! This album came out when I was 6. My sister had the cassette, and we listened to this countless times! When Doves Cry was always my favourite as a kid, but this song eventually took top spot. The emotion, both vocally & through the guitar, just hits you in the gut. Such a beautiful & perfect creation!! There will never be another Prince! RIP
On the day of his death (4/21/16) the cast of "The Color Purple" on Broadway paid tribute on stage after with an impromptu version of "Purple Rain". Cynthia Erivo really took the moment. She blew away the audience and her castmates.
Right after he passed, a local theater screened Purple Rain. It sold out every show. People were acting like he was in the room, live on stage. People danced in the isles And we all cried during Purple Rain Gone too soon
Three days after Prince died, David Gilmour performed in London. Midway during "Comfortably Numb", the band just stopped and Gilmour started playing the Purple Rain solo, while the stage lighting turned purple. It's pretty spectacular, and it's on TH-cam.
I used to see Prince perform quite often when he was a teenager in Minneapolis. He particularly liked to play Bunkers bar. He wasn’t old enough to drink in the bar but he was able to perform.
ЛЮБО!!! Принс мой абсолютный лидер. Второй человек, исполнение которого этой песни для меня не менее впечатлительно - Николь Шерзингер. LOVE!!! Prince is my absolute leader. The second person whose performance of this song is no less impressive to me is Nicole Scherzinger.
I think this video was from his movie Purple Rain. The audience members you pointed out were the antagonist of the movie. I think this was the ending sequence and he dedicated the song to his movie Dad which is why there is so much emotion in this performance. A lot of good songs came out of that movie.
Superb review as always Beth! I absolutely love this track. Bitterly regret missing the chance to see this great artist! Can i please make a suggestion for a you to review this most fantastic video of Jon Anderson performing the amazing 'Awaken' traxk with Todmobile. You wont be disappointed!
The entire performance is live, with Prince editing his guitar solo and adding on strings on the end. He was a genius! Thank you for a beautiful reaction! th-cam.com/video/q_sHFZWeOUo/w-d-xo.html
Yes! Would be awesome if she reacted to this. Another great music reaction channel, unfortunately can’t remember their name at the moment, looked at this performance sometime ago and they loved it! ❤
I've searched whether Stevie Nicks did Purple Rain cover since, found one and clicked in. Soon I disovered the performer was in fact "Steve Nick & Band" 😂😂😂
Yes while the scene is from the movie, much of the scene is based on a real live performance they did of this song and a couple others from the Purple Rain album. In fact the stage they filmed much of the movie is the same place they did the live performance! There’s video of the performance on here you can look up, much of that recording, aside from some strings and overdubs added later on, would be put on the album!
Great analysis, thank you! I agree with the comment on the Super Bowl version - a must-see. Also this live performance showcases his performance and production genius. It would be great to hear your thoughts on it: m.th-cam.com/video/LNrAFb3I2js/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUecHJpbmNlIGxpdmUgaG9sbHl3b29kIHN3aW5naW5n
I’ve been waiting for years on an analysis/reaction of the legendary British singer Sandy Denny. Instead we get Prince. Not as boring as some recent choices but hardly ground-breaking stuff. Beth seems to be a charming person but the ongoing effort to ignore the many amazing female vocalists out of the UK between the mid 1960’s and 2000’s is pretty frustrating. I’m truly starting to doubt she’s from the UK, although Beth once did a great reaction to Petula Clark

I love this! Great fact
There will never be another Prince.
Prince is greatest and my top 1 favorite all time. He is legend 🎵🎶

My favorite version of this is him playing in the Superbowl Halftime show. He is playing Purple Rain while it's raining, it's so perfect.
Agreed, that half time performance is still best the ever
And he asked his production crew if they could make it rain harder lol
@@ebieg11 Prince was a true showman.
It was a perfect moment. I was worried lightning might come down though.
We knew him as prince. But in our hearts he was king.
I was trying to think of my favorite moments, but then realized you already hit them. The song is pure, raw emotion. Makes me cry every time.
Prince is the greatest and my top 1 favorite of all time. Such a legend.
Thank you for the great analysis!!
Whenever this starts I always ask myself why is this my favourite song of all time? 8 mins later I know EXACTLY why it's my favourite 💜
I was very lucky to see him live at Rock over Germany in 1995, maybe 5 metres from the stage. He seemed so surprisingly small and fragile when he entered the stage and he seemed so big and indestructible when he left the stage after the concert. A true legend.

A great guitarman
One of the best.
@carlosmarques987 boa tarde, você já assistiu o vídeo do prince tocando while my guitar gently weeps ?
this song's harmony has something pink-floydish inside

My biggest musical influence by far. He taught me multi instrumentalism doesn't need to be daunting. Man In miss him so much.
And now I'm crying again, fuck it!
It's just insanely perfect and full of emotion
I love your brake downs! To me it was like Prince brought this church gospel soulful rock emotion that you could feel his heart!
I would love to see you do my favorite female vocalist of all-time singing "Living All Alone" (It's too awesome)
On the day of his death (4/21/16) the cast of "The Color Purple" on Broadway paid tribute on stage after with an impromptu version of "Purple Rain". Cynthia Erivo really took the moment. She blew away the audience and her castmates.
6:12 this part of the solo for me is a reference to the melody of Police's 'Every little thing she does is magic'
Absolute masterpiece! I’d love to see a Beth breakdown of Regina Spektor some time as well
Right after he passed, a local theater screened Purple Rain. It sold out every show. People were acting like he was in the room, live on stage.
People danced in the isles

Gone too soon
Prince was such a incredible vocalist and guitarist
Not only a talented songwriter, not only a great vocalist, but an insanely brilliant guitar player.
Saw him live in London in 2007, will never forget it

The video is a cut from the movie, thus the audience looks funny at times - to fit the story.
I used to see Prince perform quite often when he was a teenager in Minneapolis. He particularly liked to play Bunkers bar. He wasn’t old enough to drink in the bar but he was able to perform.
Even the album version was a live version (with some cutting and studio redo)

twangy country Purple Rain? boy did we dodge a bullet. Thank you Prince, you legend
you asked what the favorite part of the song is?? The entire thing!
It _does_ work as country, evidenced by LeAnn Rimes doing it in basically that style.
Superb review as always Beth! I absolutely love this track. Bitterly regret missing the chance to see this great artist!

Beth is my celebrity crush!
Great reaction and analysis. You should do more Prince songs like Adore, Do me Baby , the beautiful ones or If I was your girlfriend.
Great reaction Beth! I suggest you react to his Superbowl halftime show.
Beth, react to this beautiful Brazilian song, A Força do Amor, by the band Roupa Nova, and compare it with the song, Lea, by the band Toto
The people in the video have the sad look on their face because it’s a scene from the movie. The whole video is from the movie lol

I thought it was written by Prince?
