Art literally saved my life, after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer my mental health took a nose dive to the point were I was seriously thinking of taking my own life as opposed to allowing the cancer to take its inevitable course. One day I just decided to paint, something I hadn't done since I was in high school. It was just a generic Bob Ross style mountain scene and was not very good but what it did was calm my mind and focus on the present while not thinking about the hell I was in. All feelings of suicide seemed to leave me and after an extremely talented surgeon cut away my lung and lymphoid gland which saved my life I decided to carry on exploring my artistic side and after being diagnosed a further four times with cancer it became just as much a necessity to keep my sanity as much as a hobby to pass the time. I can't afford to go to art school and even if I could my body is so badly damaged the simple act of leaving the house is too much to bare. Instead of going to school I taught myself through hours upon hours of videos online and instrucional pdfs from artists like Andrew loomis. I love art, just when I thought there was nothing more to learn I find something new to challenge me. My art gave me a vocabulary I couldn't find to describe how my feelings and the challenges of having cancer, I tried so hard to put into words how I was feeling to my wife but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't make her understand but through my art she has a clear understanding now. I still have cancer but now my focus is on portraits and finding the beauty in life I once took for granted.

Let me get this straight. UAE is now "promoting art" so that the rich folks around the world can find a new outlet to launder their money and evade taxes legally all the while the Emirates can garner reputation as "open and culturally diverse" as opposed to a restrictive theocratic regime. They have paid Vice to cover it in the guise of "unpaid promotion". Talk about having your own cake and eating it! Correct me if I am wrong.

Glad I found this video. It's another part of the question I've been rolling around with for awhile. Art, identity, expression of inspiration v.s art as the expression of the person as the filter. Art becomming the person or does the person become art.
I'm pondering this because the answer hopefully will make things make sense.

Art is an expression of the human spirit - a communication from the human spirit to the human spirit, and to the divine.
Only people with numbed human spirits, who exist in the survivalist part of the brain, question the usefulness of art.
If art is an expression of the ego, created in pursuit of fame and money, then it is an abuse of the human spirit.
There has been a lot of abuse in the past 100 years.

Is this about art or the Emirates? Art will never thrive under a dictatorship. Notice how none of the artists have any controversial work, very few of their works were even shown. The only thing I've seen is abstract works with uninspired neon color palettes. The skeletons were kind of cool, but even then she talks about how she had to make it seems more positive for better mass appeal. Everything said was just some generic motivational speech garbage that's been rehashed trillions of times.

i think the best part is when the talk about emirates being the future, the whole future of that nation relies on fragile global trade infrastructure and the unprecedented levels of peace had in recent times. of course there is no talk of the wastefulness of their society, opulence without purpose. basically national dickmeasuring contest all because the west funds their resource extraction.
