Being an Artist

  • How to be an artist. Gary Mayer is obsessed with painting and drawing but must find a way to make ends meet. Follow him on his journey from the Cass Corridor in Detroit, to the wild East Village scene in New York during the 1980's, and ultimately to the gentle rolling hills of the Catskill Mountains.

Awesome, excellent, wonderful! This film by Bill Lynch about the art of my artist friend Gary Mayer was well done! I've followed Gary's art career every since we were art students at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan! I've continued to follow his work via Facebook for more years than I can remember! This film and the recognition that he's receiving is well deserved! He inspires me to become a better artist in my own right, whatever the circumstances or challenges! This is a film that I'll watch again and again! Best wishes and continued success, Gary Mayer! -Shaheed

I would love to be in one of your films. I wrote a thriller novel about a man and his autistic son. I have an autistic son. He is what inspired me to write this very strange novel, and as such, I believe my story is worth telling.@@billlynchfilms1858

Gary Mayer's art is very compelling. I am a painter myself for over 30 years, surrounded, also like Gary, by mounds of unsold art. We both believe in our vision and skill in creating interesting art. While it has been personally enriching and even healing, one wonders about the vast quantities of wonderful artwork worldwide that needs to find the proper home.

Rita, thank you for your wonderful comments. I have found that among artists, the act of creation is a goal unto itself. Artistic expression is one of humanities higher purposes and allows us to express ourselves in uniquely creative and thoughtful ways.

This is the problem artists face... ive never sold a painting, I made money as a illustrator... but never as a artist. It just builds up, I've had to stop painting on canvas as the only space to store is on my walls. He's a good artist, a lot of success in terms of monetary reward is to do with how the art system markets you...

one thing I would like to say is there is a huge difference between art 'enthusiasts' and the real refinery of mad artists, especially the ones who truly delve in the manic realm of their subconscious. Only a true fellow artist can look at work like Gary's and say 'spot on, my friend, spot on. You hit the nail on the head." He's managed to combine the essence of many brilliant artists throughout the ages while still hanging onto his true authenticity... He captures the madness of serenity and the stillness of chaos. It's utter brilliance. I'm super inspired!

Gary expressed what keeps artists going. There’s a compulsion, a true love of the process to make art. Like Gary I have hundreds of stacked up paintings. I particularly enjoyed this video because Gary represents so many of us artists creating art, no matter what. He’s humble in the best way. You can tell how much respect he has for other artists with not a hint of jealousy.

Hi Bill it's Laurie. Gary is an amazing guy. Your approach to learning about Gary through friends' interviews was insightful. The music was wonderful. We got a good look at his process. I love the painting of the man (Gary) and his shadow in the barn doorway. Gary has a great sense of humor, Dante's Infernal. You were able to make a short film that captured the viewer's attention. Bill, your editing was seamless, exceptionally lovely and fluid. The music was perfect throughout. I felt that I had actually been present in the scenes, attending the openings, visiting the studio. You understand on a deep level what you wish to convey and you did it in a remarkably fine way. 👏👏👏👏👏

Bill, I’m so happy this beautiful video made it into my feed. So we’ll done and very inspiring. My favorite take away is Gary speaking how he loves the pressure of the show and how it makes him work harder. That is a mindset I needed to hear at the moment as an artist struggling to release the fire inside to create.

Fantastic work! I'm shocked he wasn't picked as one of the "hot" artists in the East Village in the 80s. His work has the same wild spirit much of that work had, and is explosively beautiful! I lived on the Upper West Side, but I knew people in the East Village who were part of that world and I wonder if any of my acquaintances and friends knew or interacted with Gary in any way.

Hard to get a feel, and critical assessment, of his work on this video but I thought the bathroom was the best due to its simplicity and immersive quality. I quite liked the fish painting as well.
Heaven and hell didn't suck me in the way heaven and hell should. Interesting entry point, Abstract Expressionism , but not really my thing. I like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krassner's work from that period/ genre, but with the exception Pollock, the rest, not so much. Great to pursue your passion and dream though.

What is the medium of his paintings? I was intrigued by the way Gary was handling his paintings getting ready for the show. I did not know they could be that durable, especially rolling them like that.

    • @billlynchfilms1858
      @billlynchfilms1858  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Devin. By rolling the canvases onto large diameter cardboard tubes it prevents the paint from cracking. Gary mainly works in acrylics due to the lower cost of that media, but he likes to work in oils whenever possible.

I would love to be in one of your films. I wrote a thriller novel about a man and his autistic son. I have an autistic son. He is what inspired me to write this very strange novel, and as such, I believe my story is worth telling.

Salustiano. Thank you for sharing your story. My brother is a leading expert in the US on childhood autism, and he's published books on the subject. I know what a challenge it can be for parents and I wish you luck. I'll bet your story is fascinating, but most of my films are local because of budget constraints.

In fact, if you wouldn't mind sharing your brother's name, I would love to contact him. My wife and I have been thinking of ways to fundraise for autism research, that also blends in my novel (my book is a fantastic thriller, but I believe it also serves as a blueprint for those struggling to raise a child who is autistic). I think both can be a smash hit, but all that I am missing is someone to advocate for us and guide our mission. @@billlynchfilms1858
