Fun fact: The way that Jaime sacrificed a part of the Lannister troops at Casterly Rock, while taking the main forces to High Garden, is basically the same strategy that Robb used to win the Battle of the Whispering Wood (which resulted in Jaime being captured by the Starks). So you can really tell that Jaime learned from his past mistakes...😄

Jon didn't bend the knee because as Dany said, by declaring himself King of the North he is in open rebellion. The North is part of her Kingdom (Queendom lol), not and independent Kingdom he can be the head of. He can be warden of the North, as Ned was for Robert. But not King. Jon's people chose him as a their King and leader and I believe he feels it would be a betrayal to them to step down and swear fealty to Danaerys. The Northernes by nature are untrusting of outsiders (and rightly so), and southerners. Danaerys isn't only a southerner by technicality, but she has spent her entire life outside of the kingdom entirely. The North aren't easily trusting and this scenario definitely difficult to gain their support. I believe Jon, like Ned, is tied to his honor and dedication to his people.

Good talk. Also, never forget Northeners fought against daddy of Deanerys, the Mad King, 20-25 years ago.....so lots of them really hate Targaryen family.....

She is not the Queen. Cercei is. No bending the knee will make her more of a queen. Now, creating an alliance might enhance her chances at gaining power. But as for now? Its just talk and delusions of grandeur.

    • @HuntingViolets

When she was in the east, she was the foreigner from Westeros. Now she's in Westeros, and she's the foreigner again. In the books, there was a puppet show in King's Landing where the lions were eaten by dragons. Cersei ended it. So they might be more amenable to a Targaryen returning, but Daenerys may not get there first.

Honestly I feel no sympathy for Ellaria and Tyene. They had this coming to them for killing Myrcella. She was an innocent girl who had no part in Oberyn’s death and her death was such a disgrace to Oberyn’s memory because of you remember he never wanted to hurt any children because he did not believe a child is responsible for the sins of their parents. He only wanted to get revenge on Tywin for getting his sister and nieces killed. He never went for Cersei, her kids, nor Tyrion at all, just Tywin. But nooooo Ellaria was so consumed with hate for the Lannisters that she became just as bad as Cersei.
If you kill a child and face the wrath of that child’s parent than I have no sympathy for you.

I actually don't mind this deviation where Cersei takes her revenge on the Sand Snakes. However, with that said, keep in mind that in the actual Dorne plot the Sand Snakes want to put Myrcella on the throne, and she was wounded, not killed. Her ear was sliced off and now has to wear veils to cover up her defect, but she's still alive.

Keep in mind, Miya, bending the knee means he gives up his Northern Crown. Jon has a point, he doesn’t, nor does the Northern people, know Dany. The last Targaryens murdered beloved Starks. They have reason to resent Dany, despite us knowing Her Majesty. But, understandably, Dany must prove herself first.

Tyrion should have mentioned the time when Commander Mormont was almost attacked by a wight that Jon killed; in season 2 they get a raven that informs King's Landing of this and Tyrion trusted it was true.
I was not sad for Ellaria, she got what she deserved for what she did to Myrcella. One of the other few times I rooted for Cersei. She understood Ellaria's grief, even in spite of talking about Oberyn to get a rise out of her. I also fully agreed that whatever her grievances were; Myrcella was innnocent and did not deserve to die. Nevermind that Oberyn's death is his own fault.

"You love her. You really do love her. You poor fool. She'll be the end of you". Not only the confession but even the interaction reflects on how much of a tormented soul Jaime is. Or rather, he always was. He is in a prison of his own sense of duty. Maan, so many callbacks. It's only fitting Jaime gives a nod to the Young Wolf when talking about learning from his mistakes. When Olenna says "I want her to know it was me" there's a tiny second when Jaime looks at his sword but then thinks better of it. You can see his expression turn from momentary rage to dejection as he walks away. It's almost like his spirit leaving his body. It is as perfectly executed as can be. I can care less about a battle when the Tyrells are already supposed to be depleted between Euron and Tarlys. This was an epic way for Diana Rigg to exit stage left. Rest in peace, phenomenal actor.

Logically it should have been predictable that at first sight Dany and Jon would not get along. Dany is conducting herself with royalty and she's always been always entitled (The Throne is mine) whereas Jon has basically the vibe of a common plummer. lol Imagine Visceris meeting Ned Stark. And how it would go. Both Dany and Jon are a less extreme version of these two. They are too much the opposite.

I love at 11:33 you caught that exchange between Jon and Dany as she says "We all enjoy what we are good at" and Jon replies with this somber tone "I don't" I think this is the moment her opinion changes of him and they make a point to show her reaction to his reply. Dany knows Jon is probably good at killing people and fighting, but he hates it, and I think she seems him as a better person. It's a subtle two lines, but it also shows the comparisons of Jon and his father (Rhaegar).

I loved Olenna Tyrell so much she was my most favorite Tyrell, even better than Queen Margaery honestly. Margaery was my second favorite Tyrell, Loras the third, and Mace the fourth. I really loved House Tyrell as a whole because it they were so mysterious and sly. Give to the people and they will be happy. Every move the Tyrells made was a power move where they would get something they wanted off from it and an intelligent one as well but at the same time they got what they wanted by making people happy. They weren’t above giving small victories to certain people which is what I really liked that about them. I also liked that they worked together as a team and genuinely loved each other in the family. They were one of my favorite houses. I miss them so much😭
Olenna’s words were the best. She basically won at her own death, telling Jaime she killed his twerp of a son, dying peacefully unlike her family. She came into the world as the Queen of Thorns and died as the Queen of Thorns. Loved her so much.
    Book spoilers:
The Tyrell name may be gone but the Tyrell bloodline is still active I think. Fun fact(Because I think this fact is canon in the show as well as the books even though they didn’t get mentioned at all by Olenna or Mace) but Olenna not only had Mace Tyrell as a son but she also has two daughters as well with her husband, Luthor Tyrell. Their names are Mina and Janna. Mina is married to Paxter Redwyne, Olenna’s nephew and cousin and they actually have 3 kids. As for Janna, she is married to a Fossoway knight now. Margaery also mentioned a Tyrell cousin to Sansa named Alanna Tyrell. So the Tyrell bloodline is still growing strong I think.

Even though Casterly Rock has golden mines (which, I believe Tywin said, they are running out of gold or those mines are already empty), The Reach (the realm the Tyrells governed) is the main supplier of food and crops. You can't win a war without money, but you can't win a war and face a long winter without food and crops. That's why I think they marched Highgarden and let Casterly Rock poorly protected.

It was incredibly satisfying to watch Cerceis revenge, but at the same time- you felt what it was like to lose your daughter, so wanting that feeling but even worse to happen to an enemy is more twisted and proves Cercei losing her daughter isn’t as saddening anymore. I think as morals go in real life someone who’s willing to not take revenge especially hurt someone the same way or worse the way you were hurt- that’s what a truly good person would do. A truly good person wouldn’t act on it. Either way great scene, great villian.

I'm gonna say that this is a great episode from start to finish. There's not many scenes that can match the gravitas and the electricity of that final conversation with Jaime and Olenna. The way she bows out is the ultimate 'victory in defeat'. The whole episode is a perfect turbulence of drama, suspense and emotion. Hell they even manage to squeeze in a reunion in all this. That alone would've been the focus of the season finale of other shows. Here it's just a throwaway. For all the complaining this gets, most directors would feel lucky if they put out something 1/4th as scintillating as the finished product here.

  • @eadred9164

Then there's the ones who complain about not showing the Tyrell battle. Randyll Tarly was the main bannerman of House Tyrell. Him taking up Cersei's offer to betray Olenna (why wouldn't he?) just like Roose Bolton took up Tywin's offer to betray Robb and become the new warden of his region, means a huge portion of the Tyrell army was not only gone, they joined with the Lannister forces attacking Olenna. So it wouldn't be much of a battle would it? Robb couldn't mount a successful attack ever again after the Karstarks left. Plus they the Tyrells and Dorne were on their way to siege King's Landing so it can be assumed that a chunk of the Tyrell army went down with the ships during Euron's attack. The Tyrells had already lost before the battle started. I don't anything logistically wrong here. But more importantly, only emotionally challenged pedants would prioritize hand wringing over a battle when that exchange between Olenna and Jaime, how it holds a mirror to Jaime's character and the manner of her confession are all worth the admission price of a 100 head chopping scenes. Not to mention it's the same bait and switch like last time between 6x8 and 6x9. The battle is coming up next.

I always loved that Jon was introduced with just his name, because that’s him just Jon. A bastard, a man who lets his actions speak for him rather than flourishing himself with titles. Davos could have said. “this is Jon Snow the King in the North, The Bastard of Winterfell, the 998th Lord Commander of the Nights Watch, Uniter of Wildlings and Northmen, the White Wolf and the Resurrected.” That just wouldn’t be Jon though. He’s a man of duty, a man of the people. He doesn’t consider himself any of those things. He’s just focused on the task ahead and being what other people need him to be. He was a steward despite not wanting to be, he was a spy despite not wanting to be, he lead the battle on the wall because the brother’s of the nights watch needed him, he went to save them because he knew they needed them too and if Stannis hadn’t come then no one else would have. He took the position of lord commander because he was voted into it, he didn’t ask Sam to put him forward, he killed Mance because it was the right thing to do, and we all know he died for the wildlings and even after that he keeps fighting for Westeros. He takes back Winterfell for Sansa because it’s what she needs to be safe. She was awful to him as a child, but his duty to a man who never even told him his mother’s name came first. Imagine if Davos said all that. Daenerys would’ve been like “okay have my army.” Lmao.

It is an act of submission, a recognition of authority and a demonstration of fealty.
The people chose Jon and chose to bend a knee to him. Dragon lady goes around threatening people to bend a knee. Huge difference.

Archmaester could’ve been a little more appreciative. Give Sam some Felix Felicis or something

"You are in open rebellion" Sweetie? Danarys? Calling yourself Queen does not make you a queen. At this point you have no power. So, please, tone it down a notch.

Why couldn't he just bend the knee? The North chose independence and fought for it. They chose to break off the seven kingdoms with Robb's crowning. What do you think his people will say if he just gave it away?

Yeah, I'm with you: I didn't think season 7 or 8 for that matter (except for the first and last episodes of season 8) were bad at all. I think it's because my expectations weren't skewed by reading the books, which I'm sure were better because in a book, you have the advantage of being able to explain characters' motivations, who was thinking what and do more world-building, going deeper into backstories than a movie or series can, which leads to having to cut corners, merge characters, divert, drop or create storylines, etc. Following the story the show's writers told without having the original story to compare it with, I had no issue with it. Not my favorite seasons at all, but not nearly as bad as the internet says.

The only season I truly disliked was season 8. Complete trash. It was visually stunning but horrible storytelling and ending to a once great show
