Georgetown Colorado - A Semi-Abandoned Ghost Town

- Georgetown is a breathtaking ghost town that sits 8,530 feet above sea level. It is nestled on the upper side of Clear Creek Valley, in Clear Creek County Colorado. The town is referred to as a “Territorial Charter Municipality”; however, it is considered a semi-abandoned town. This is because it once housed 10,000 residents and now holds just over 1,000 people. This town is far from dead and is fortunate not to be a complete ghost town or have succumbed to wildfire. In fact, it is one of the most well-preserved mining communities from the mid-1800s.
The town was started as a simple gold mining camp in 1859 during the Pike's Peak gold rush. Gold gave Georgetown its start however, it was silver that made the town the largest silver producer in Colorado (until 1878 when Leadville surpassed it). Although the town is small today, it...

I'm here right now. 3/11/23. Needed gas, stumbled upon the town. I commented how cute the Shell was to the clerk. She added that most or all stores are family owned. I appreciated the comfortable quaint surroundings being from Michigan. She again added that Georgetown was the second most haunted....stating that all lodging has something spooky going on.
I asked if the store had any literature. She stated,...it's all on the internet. And here I am. A beautifully done piece. Made my day.

George town was my honey moon town back years ago. My wife of many years passed almost 6 years ago. George town will always hold precious memories for me, I an to old to travel there anymore. Thank you for the u tube look at the town.

I grew up in Arvada, CO next to Wheat Ridge off I-70 I love Colorado thank you for taking the time to show a wonderful little town I have beem watching a few of your videos. You do a good job covering the long lost mining towns. Go figure Im now in my 60's my fathet was good for taking up yo the mountains anf roam around in the family station wagon I have been to many of these towns as a kid in the late 60"s and early 70"s. Its great to see them again.

The end of the Clint Eastwood movie "Every Which Way But Loose" was filmed there in Georgetown in the late 70's. Definitely going to adventure there one day.

I love how the Kneisel grocery store still has and uses all the historic furniture, but is still an actual grocery store where you can get Triscuits and Chef Boyardee. It's a business for the locals before a business for the tourists, run by the same family from Day 1, and I think that's so cool. You can't find many independent grocers nowadays.

I live in Idaho Springs about 10-15 minutes east of Georgetown.. Thank you for that history was very interesting. Could you do some on Idaho Springs and other beautiful little towns around the area and all over Colorado? Look forward to more history videos of where I live and explore.

in the Autumn when the leaves are changing go and buy a ticket for the Georgetown loop train that goes in a big circle through the hills it's freaking gorgeous

My uncle & aunt had a pizza restaurant across the street from the school back in the 70's they sold pizza by the slice or a whole pizza a large pizza was a full cookie sheet pizza. They later opened an Italian restaurant & bar named the Italian Stallion. They closed due to a divorce and after years being separated they remarried and are still together to this day.

I was there in the late fifties or early 60's, but was a kid so don't remember a lot, but I do remember how clean and well kept it was. Leadville is my favorite, but I love all the Colorado mining towns and their histories. Thank you for including the history in your videos!

I'm a Colorado mountain resident who has visited Georgetown more times than I can remember. How can you call it "Semi-abandoned" and where did all those 10K people "fit"?

Ah, another architectural gem in the Colorado Rockies! The late Louis L'Amour was so taken by the "French Louis" DuPuy that he was featured in one of my favorite Westerns, L'Amour's "The Proving Trail." The citizens are justifiably proud of this beautiful city. Thanks for showing it to us.
