Good video as always guys. I wouldn’t be upset if you actually show the Lamello, Domino and Pocket screws in use as well as some of the other techniques you use to hide fasteners actually being used, installed, etc… If you already have please post a link in the comments. Ron
I use Medex for all painted projects. It’s great that it’s moisture resistant (just weighs a ton versus standard mdf). I also use the PlumaPly HDF for its advantage of screw holding.
Right. Like all product it has its pros and cons. Pluma Ply HDF is the actual name of the product were using as well. Combo core is what our supplier uses to identify it easier.
@@kendecost I wish I would've seen this two weeks ago. I'm in the final steps of machining for painted inside/out upper cabinets and I would've gone with that product over the B3 Maple Ply I bought. It's okay and it'll look good when I'm done but that Pluma Ply HDF is superior.
Great timing! I'm working on a bid that requires tall flat, paint grade doors and I've been trying to investigate what material would be best. Thanks for your insight
How do you feel about the MDF around water sources and for denting? Does the shop finish make a difference in the durability of MDF? In my local area, we struggle with site finish MDF doors not holding up to everyday kitchen use. All of our pre-finished lines typically use maple for their painted doors, so I have not been able to compare apples to apples.
@@kendecost I'd love to see it because in my experience edges come out messy. Interested how you finish the edges (shaving access/sanding, etc.). Perhaps it's just a matter of using top quality materials. Thanks
Nice one again Ken. I am glad you you show that drawer tracks need 3/4” long screws a s not 5/8” like most hardware supplier is trying to sell you. Do you ever use MDF light (not a trick question 😎)
For sure. One of the situations where you want a little extra bite on those screws. On occasion we will use lightweight MDF. I have found that its a bit more prone to damage.
Shoot! Knew I forgot something. Even mentioned it but never circled back to it. We use a shorter version of the screws we use to mount it to the wall. We drill a hole in the drawer box larger than the shaft of the screw but smaller than the head of the screw to allow to movement and adjustments.
@@kendecost Knowing the length of the wall and drawer mounting screws would be helpful. Also helpful to know and have listed what "construction screws" you use. There are many.
Thank you. This answers the questions I sent earlier about prefinished walnut for cabinets. I have asked in my local Houston market. We received the same answer that you all did when you first started. Currently, it is a special order in Houston. Do you have a brand on the prefinished Walnut you all like?
You said you use Dominos to align face frames with the cabinet box and Lamello clam shell connectors to actually attach them. Are you gluing the face frames or just relying on the Lamello connectors to hold the face frame? Really enjoy your videos!
Any thoughts on lightweight or ultralight MDF vs MDF? I prefer the lightweight sheets as they're much easier to handle, but not sure if I'm giving anything up by doing so?
Laminate flooring is made of HDF, that gives you an idea what type of material it is. It can be mounted with screws after pre-drilling, but you can't drive a screw in de side of a board without it splitting.
Home centers will never carry a product like that, you need to find a good lumber yard, or building supplies store in your area. They probably won't stock it, but they might be able to order it from one of their vendors for you.
Find out what brand of products your supplier carries, then check their websites for a similar product and ask them to order it. Columbia make ClassiCore (Combi) and Garnica makes Pluma Ply.
I learn something new every episode Thank You
Awesome! Thanks for watching every episode!
Your workshop is haunted! The “adjustable angle square?” Kept rocking back and fourth. Time for a bigger workshop, Ken would love it 😂
Hmm, I would say it was the heater that's near there but we turn it off for filming cause its so loud. Spooky!
Would love to see a detailed video on your drawer construction technique
We actually buy most of our drawers from another local shop that only makes drawers.
The production value of the lighting you utilized recording this episode is excellent.
Fascinating.
I see what you did there.

Excellent presentation and great information!!!

These would be a good option although I do prefer using the regular MDF for doors. I find that the MDF to be flatter.
I've been using Dynaplus MDF screws for cabinet boxes. They have good holding power in the side of the board, even without pre-drilling.
Good to know. Ill have to look into them more. Thanks.
Yo Ken, I just got back into the /craftsmen/trade industry and you guys keep me on the level. Always learn a little something 😌
Thats awesome man! Really glad to hear that!
Thanks. I learned a lot. wood veneer doesn’t shrink or expand very much?
Thanks so much for the explanation, this explain real well and simple the use of this materials, well how you use it in your shop, thanks again
Thank you for watching!
Great video!
Thanks,really helpful

Anytime. Thanks for watching.
I've been using Blum hardware for years and have always used 5mm system srews.
I was hoping he would cover system screws especially for use with mdf
Great video, with the type 17 head does that eliminate predrilling for screws?
I always recommend predrilling your screws
Thanks Ken, this was very helpful
Can you do an episode on how you finish edges of vaneer plywood? Do you use walnut "tape".with glue that's activated by heat?
We sure can. Yes we we an edge banding tape with heat activated glue.

@@kendecost same. The benefits aren’t big enough. It’s also rough when primed , so it actually takes more time to prime correctly.
What is the best option for mounting drawer fronts to drawer boxes?

Comes down to preference
Does HDF hold screws better, and where does one find it? None of the major home centers carry it.
Laminate flooring is made of HDF, that gives you an idea what type of material it is. It can be mounted with screws after pre-drilling, but you can't drive a screw in de side of a board without it splitting.

Interesting...so radial grain does not move as much?
Correct. Typically radial moves about half as much a tangential.
Do you have any recommended brands or sources you get screws from?
GRK is a leader in this area.
Trying to find a combi core product in Denver, no luck so far, anyone have ideas.

Try Sierra Forest Products, Austin , or Paxton
