    If you plan to go anywhere with your cat or even if you're not, regular nail trims are so important, not only for your kitties but for your furniture and any hotel furniture they may come in contact with. This is how I trim my cat's nails: th-cam.com/video/eC21JCqRjJ4/w-d-xo.html

    Thanks for a great video with so much detail and visual aids, but delivered in under 5 minutes. I'm definitely going to use these ideas for our three fur babies going on a two day field trip. I am concerned about traveling with cats and allowing them access to the front area of the vehicle. At this point I'm planning on setting up a screen so they can't get to the front. I'm concerned one of them might try to go near the gas and break peddles and cause a major problem.

    Ha! I thought I was good; I used to have a ginger cat who liked to put his hind legs on the center console and his front paws on the dash and look out of the windshield! I Never took him more than about 100 miles; he was a big hit when others would see him and point and laugh and wave. You've taken it to another level! Peace, my friends!

    My deepest condolences. Thank you for this wonderful video. My two girl 🐈🐈‍⬛ have been on the road with me since babies. One loves the front seat one loves the back window or the large back window watching cars behind us. Cars that pass us always break and come back to see the girls looking at them. 😂 My girls go to the lake and love going Rving at the beach. Every couple of months. My girls go in my backyard in the morning and about an hour at sun down. They have gps collars but they never get curious and leave my corner property. As soon as I start clapping they run into because I’m leaving to work or it’s bed time for all of us. We sleep with Alexa meditation music. They both have their own 6 ft cat tower at my home and at my boyfriend house an hour away where we go every other weekend. After my 15 year dog and husband passed one little cat found me in my own backyard then the other one came to me while we were visiting San Antonio Tx. I live in Austin Texas. Thank you for your wonderful video. 🐈‍⬛❤️🐈

    I love all the thought and effort you show that went into making road trips easier and more comfortable for the cats and you. Only thing I would ask, b/c of a close call I saw someone have, would any of you recommend harness & leash on cats when they're out and about in the car, in case of accidents or open doors and escape potential? And to keep someone from getting under pedals or obstructing driver's view. My boy did that. He got through the partition I had set up to block them from getting up front. He sat right in front of my face. It was funny but scary.

    Thank you for this video - we are trying to get our stubborn boy to go on road trips with us but so far he's very resistant to the car. I LOVE your set up - not overboard at all 🤣 it seems we haven't been creative enough. We've been rather selfish and took up room in the car for our stuff. I think we'll relocate our bags to the roof rack and take on your ideas.
    SO GRATEFUL for your share - I bet Joshie will be more willing to road trip with us real soon

      @Kelly Morgan, thank you so much for the kind words!!! It really was a blessing to be able to see my grandmother one more time. And thankfully, we even found a cat-friendly hotel a mile away from where she was staying at my uncle's house. I think with some practice, your Joshie will learn to be more at ease in the car, especially if he is not associating it with a vet visit. It took us a long time to get our cats used to road trips but now they are pros. When we first started traveling with them, we kept each one in a medium size dog crate, big enough for a litter box and a bed. We also made the litter box enclosed to create an additional space/perch for seeing better out the window. One of our cats used to feel safer in smaller spaces and we brought blankets to cover his crate so he didn't get over stimulated and nervous. It helped a lot. I actually made another video on how we trained them to be more relaxed in the car before our first trip and I think you may find it helpful. If you haven't watched it yet, please do. Just don't forget if you have to brake fast your cats can be severely injured. Best to be in a large carrier and seat belted in. That's what we do for our cat.
    The crate is large enough to hold a litter tray:)

    • @GeographicallyFree
      @GeographicallyFree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @Terry McFarland, I completely agree that is the absolute best option! In our original set-up, which I will share at some point, each cat has their own dog kennel with enough floor space for both a litter box and a bed. We also attached a carpet remnant on top of each enclosed litter box to give them additional space inside each kennel in the form of a perch/scratch pad. Lately we have pivoted to create more room for human sleep space as an alternative to hotels in certain situations. For example, on this particular trip we were visiting my grandmother in hospice care, and wanted to isolate ourselves on the road as much as possible before we saw her. Ideally, we would have an RV for sleeping, which was on our to-do list for 2019. Unfortunately, due to a series of unexpected events unfolding that year, we have put it off for now.

      Honestly, I don't think they need a ton of space. They will probably nap a lot. We drove with our SUV full of stuff during our last trip from AZ to NH and just made sure they had their beds, a litter box to access, and a box to perch on for looking out the window. If the litter box is inside of a sturdy cardboard box it could double as a perch. You could put the bed on it too. We did rent a small UHaul trailer but it was necessary. Hopefully you can make it work without one but either way, I hope your move goes smoothly.

    Hi, new subscriber here! I’ve been researching about how to go on a long road trip with our 5 month old kitten and I’m so glad I ran across your channel. It made feel a little more at ease and have definitely picked up a lot of very useful tips. I’m a little worried our cat would somehow make her way to the driver’s side of the car and hide/play underneath where the gas and break are located which is of course very dangerous. Any advice on how to avoid that from happening say if we from time to time let her out of her carrier to stretch, go potty, eat etc.?

    • @GeographicallyFree
      @GeographicallyFree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @ninexistent, welcome! It's so very strange that kittens like to sneak under the gas and break pedals. It seems to be a "thing" and you are right, it is definitely dangerous. They can also be very sneaky about jumping out of the car when you open the door to get gas, etc. They can act like they are sleeping once second and zoom out the next. I have two video recommendations for you to watch when you have a chance that may be of some help. One is the set-up we used for the first couple of years when our cats were newer to travel: th-cam.com/video/EXVuLCVV7ac/w-d-xo.html The other one is how we trained our cats to be better, calmer travelers over time: th-cam.com/video/EXVuLCVV7ac/w-d-xo.html I hope they help! Very helpful tips for traveling with cats. I’ll be making my first trip with my 4 cats possibly later this year. I’m traveling from Japan to Canada. So of course they’ll also be making an international flight. Just wondering, are you open with the hotel staff that you have cats? I’m not sure if I could sneak 4 cats past the front desk and into my room. I have no idea what policy hotels in Canada have concerning cats.

    • @GeographicallyFree
      @GeographicallyFree  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, great question! We always seek out pet friendly hotels and are upfront about our cats. What I've noticed here in the US is that there is typically a two pet maximum per room but we have also stayed at a resort that allows 3! Some short term rentals on sites such as Air BNB or VRBO may allow more depending on the owner. We haven't taken our cats to Canada so I'm not familiar with the hotel pet scene there. I do think it's better to be upfront though. If you're not you risk the absorption of elevated *incidental" fees for cleaning after checkout if they find pet hair or any other remnants that a pet was in the room.

    • @ShikokuFoodForest
      @ShikokuFoodForest ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeographicallyFree Thanks for reply. I totally agree, it is better to be up front about your pets. I’ve never travelled with my cats before, so this will be their very first time. I’m unsure whether I will even stay in any hotels with them since I’m kind of worried how the whole experience will be for them. Then again, it might give them a good rest. I need to drive 12 hours, so may just stop at some rest stops for some naps. I’m Canadian planning on finally returning to Canada 🇨🇦. I just want to move to my new home, so this is not a vacation. I will admit traveling such a long distance with them worries me, but my time in Japan has unexpectedly come to an end. It’s no longer sustainable to stay here.

      @@GeographicallyFree Thanks so much! I’ve been watching TH-cam on traveling with cats and it seems to go quite well. Many cats handle it better than expected. I just don’t have a vehicle in Japan, so I can’t take them on shorter trips beforehand for practice. Anytime I take them to the vet which is no so often, we go by bicycle in their carrier. So they’ve had minimal travel experience. We’ll be driving 4 hours to Osaka, then a long 9-10 hour flight to Canada, then 12 hours driving. I’ll probably just take regular breaks at truck stops. I’m thinking I should perhaps start harness training them, since it may be safer to prevent them escaping at the airport and at rest stops. But, perhaps not necessary. Perhaps it’s safer to just keep them in my vehicle once we get to Canada 🇨🇦 and are traveling.

    • @GeographicallyFree

      Oh yes! Whatever is easiest for you is always best. We only have one enclosed litter box and we leave it at home. Sometimes on short day trips, we only bring one cat. Rather than purchase an additional enclosure that we may not need later, we put our extra litter pan inside the cardboard box with a cut-out. I've traveled with regular litter boxes that don't have covers too but we both have allergies so want to keep the dust to a minimum.

    What a great video Thank you! I am moving (by car) with my cats from west coast to east coast- are there any harnesses you recommend? And which hotels did you use for cat friendly?

    • @GeographicallyFree
      @GeographicallyFree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @Al S, Our pet friendly hotel preference is La Quinta and that is where we have stayed the most with our cats. They were bought out by Wyndham hotels in 2019 so some of the rules may have changed based on location. Our experience has been that most offer no additional charge for pets but some locations we encountered do. We always asked ahead so there were no surprises. I also recommend reading the reviews for each location because the experience can vary as well. Due to my allergies, we like to scope out the new builds or newly remodeled locations. Bonus for me if they have hard flooring and no carpet in the rooms. Once you get closer to the east coast, La Quinta may be harder to find (at least that is the case in the Northeast) but if you search the Wyndham website you may find additional hotel brand options under their umbrella. Be sure to join the Wyndham rewards program right away too so you can start earning points towards free rooms or discounts. As far as harnesses go, here is a link to the one we are using now. We've had them for about two years and find them to be better than what we used to have as they are less able to worm their way out of this design. That did happen with one of our cats a couple of times so good to keep an eye on your kitty when wearing one. If I see my cat walking backwards, I know he is trying to set himself free. Thanks so much for watching and best of luck with your big move!

    • @GeographicallyFree
      @GeographicallyFree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty!!! I cried for months after my cat of 15 years passed away several years ago so I totally get it. It is so hard to lose a pet and it's not always easy to tell when cats are not feeling good because they usually hide it so well. Our current cats (in this video) are still alive and with us. It was actually my grandmother who passed away shortly after the road trip in this video. She had been declining quickly so we wanted to rush down to spend time with her. My previous cat that I mentioned above suffered with a few UTI's, the last time with crystals. It was not the cause of his passing and he did give us some warning signs albeit subtle. One thing I noticed is that I wasn't seeing any pee in the litter box and he wasn't "going" anywhere else. I also noticed he wasn't big on drinking from his water dish. There may have been a little blood the last time but it was so long ago I can't remember. I learned later that some (but not all) cats don't like to drink water near their food. The vet suggested that I change his food from dry to some dry some wet and mix a little bit of water in to keep him hydrated. I also changed his food to something of a higher quality. That helped keep him healthy after he was treated and he never had an issue after that. I know UTI's are more common and more deadly in male cats but our current male cat has never had an issue. He seems to love drinking moving water more than still water so we bought him a fountain (and then I broke it). Sometimes we let him drink out of the faucet, which is his favorite, but not too often because the city water is full of so many nasty chemicals and we don't have a whole house filter. We also clean and change the cats' water bowl twice a day so they don't have any reason to stick their nose up at it. Our male cat also loves it when I trickle the water into the bowl from above so he can drink from the stream as I fill it. After what I went through with my cat that had the UTI's I am now super vigilant about water consumption as you can tell. LOL.

Chances are for a trip of that length your cat may be too nervous to go to the bathroom but your cat could also go if they are nervous. Depends on the cat. Here is my affiliate link to the one we got for each of our cats when we first started traveling with them. We got the 36" crate. @Sara Dheyaa my other suggestion if you have a nervous cat is to bring a blanket to cover most of the crate or kennel so your cat is not overstimulated. We did that with one of our cats when we first started traveling with them and left the front open where he could see us and it calmed him down right away. Our other cat preferred to look out the window.

    Do cats need to be on leash when in the car?

    • @GeographicallyFree
      @GeographicallyFree  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our cats personally don't wear them for car rides specifically but if we think we will take them for a walk during our road trip we will definitely bring a harness and leash with us. The reason I've used the harness for training is because we wanted to expose our cats to the outside and get them used to the sounds since noises can be scary in the car for some cats. We also use the harness to latch them inside the cat backpack if we happen to use it and want to keep the flap open. I don't think it's completely necessary to have one for road trips though. Sadly, we just sold it. It's not the most fun vehicle to park but I was hoping to keep it forever. It was nice to be able to pull over and nap in the back instead of hotels during long road trips. I even tried to convince my husband that it would be a good idea to travel in it full time. He wasn't going for it. But that means a completely different vehicle set-up is coming soon.

      @@theresam567 there are surprisingly a number of hotels that say yes to cats, depending on location. We've had good luck with that, mainly in major cities, but sometimes smaller towns near major highways.

    • @GeographicallyFree
      @GeographicallyFree  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, Adel! Our cats have pretty good balance and we haven't had any issues yet. If I do see ahead to some bumpy roads or stop and go traffic, I will hold my cat. Most of the time they are in the back sleeping though. Also keep in mind that this video was filmed after many years of travel. I have two more videos that show examples of safety. This one is how we kept our cats enclosed during their travels. th-cam.com/video/EXVuLCVV7ac/w-d-xo.html

      It's a good idea to do what you do! I have too. I wouldn't trust most cats free roaming in the car. During long distances our two current cats want access to the litter. What we did when we first started traveling long distance is very different than what you saw in this video. As you can see they are enclosed. th-cam.com/video/EXVuLCVV7ac/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oO2sn0oTQdaYv8ak Now we travel full time and have an RV and a truck and have a custom built-in option in a most recent video. Basically our setup changes depending on our vehicle and situation.

    What’s the name of the cooler you used for the trip?

    • @GeographicallyFree
      @GeographicallyFree  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Adri, we have the Colman 40 quart Power Chill that we purchased in 2017 from Amazon. We did buy a new cord for it a few months ago because my husband suspected it might be on its way out. Other than that the cooler is still going strong. My one piece of advice is to remember to unplug it if you are going to shut your car off because it can drain the battery.

      I know what you mean! 😂 I've had cats like that too. I think the difference for us this time is that we spent a year slowly getting them used to things before we went on a trip with them. And even after that we still have had to be consistent all these years to keep them used to it. Here's a video I made showing some of the steps we took. We didn't rush the process at all and we still do this in between travel. th-cam.com/video/_TYpxMfELjQ/w-d-xo.html

      Michael, haha! Your cat is like most. We spent years training our two for moments like this and they don't usually like the scary outside. But when we first started traveling with them, they each had their own crate that included a bed, a scratch perch and litter box. Always best to err on the safer side. In fact, if I'm traveling solo, I don't feel comfortable with a free roaming cat in my car.

    sorry to say, but this is very unsafe. For the cats and for the people. In case of a head-on collision all those objects and cats would fly freely, with high probability of collision and damage to all, occupants and cats.
    I have been travelling for long road trips with our cat but we never leave him free.

      One day my mom stopped to get gas. My younger sister was two years old at the time and strapped into her car seat in the back seat of the vehicle. While they were there, a giant rogue boulder flew through the air from a blasting job across the street and landed in my sister's car seat. Thankfully she had unbuckled herself moments before and wandered into the front passenger seat while my mom was pumping gas. Otherwise she likely wouldn't be here today. My point is that accidents can happen regardless of the circumstances.
