Thank you for this! My cat had a medical emergency. When I put him in the car, it made the entire situation worse. I wish he had not been so afraid when he passed away in the car... I promised myself that my next pet will not be afraid of the car ever again.
No wonder the cat is stressed with the steering wheel on the wrong side, I'd be stressed too.

We have road traveled a lot with our cat (a very similar Norwegian Forest), moving every 2-3 days. I also bring him with me to my office a couple of times a week. A short road trip but he keep used to the car.
I approve everything you said but, may I add a few tips based on our experience?
1) Get your cat used to a leash and harness at an early age. It is absolutely useful when traveling to avoid adding another source of stress!
2) Also, get him used to having a GPS around his neck all the time (on a separate collar from the leash!). If it gets away from you once, it can be an extremely stressful experience. There are GPS with a SIM designed for cats that work in every country in the world.
3) On long trips, when he starts meowing, stop asap in a quiet area, away from people, possibly green and wooded, and let him/her walk for a good half hour. He usually gets so tired that he sleeps in the car for the next 3-4 hours.
That said, my experience is that sometimes it's fine, he even seems to enjoy watching the world go by out the window (mine always stands at the back window looking back). Other times less so.
Also better highways than roads with lots of curves. That's my personal experience. Not sure it applies to many other cats...
Just a warning, i let my cat out of the carrier the first time i got him in the car, he went under the back seat and wouldn't come out.
I did the same thing! But instead, she went on the dash and completely hindered my vision. When we pulled over, a sweet couple also pulled over and offered to help and then laughed at us for not being able to catch her lol

My MC mix loves the car. We rescued him at 5 weeks old (feral colony), while on a trip. Poor baby's first two days with us was a 1000-mile car trip home. We bought a tiny collar and leash for bathroom breaks for us--he used litter in a takeout box. He decided very fast that it was more interesting than scary. He still likes car rides in his much bigger harness, and walks on a leash. He does not like the carrier, but I've never needed to use it with him. Having had other cats, tho, who loathe the whole experience with the passion of a thousand burning suns, this is the best advice I've ever heard, thank you! ☺️
I shall attempt to apply these things because getting our Ollie into a carrier involves lots of high drama and occasionally bloodshed on my part.
This is the best video on the subject on all of TH-cam. The best idea that I will implement is to have weekly car rides around the block for just a few minutes so that they don't think that every journey is difficult or long. Thank you!
