      I made a nine hour drive with my lil guy alone! For him, he just did a lot better in the carrier. I tried letting him out, but he was freaked out by everything and tried crawling under the drivers seat 😅 not fun trying to get him out while going down the interstate.

    • @IndoorOutdoorKat
      @IndoorOutdoorKat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Personally, I wouldn't leave them out when driving, mostly out of concern about other drivers - it doesn't matter how good of a driver you are or how calm your cat is, if someone else bumps you it could really spook and/or hurt the kitty. But letting them out in the car during rest stop breaks is a great way to keep them happy!

      I feel like that is a fair choice? I'm worried she'll scare the kitten when the kitten is quite comfortable in the car and even sleeps fully. Where my other cat rosie, meows pants and sometimes pees with how nervous she is, we give her treats so tbf rosie hasn't peed past few times but I think a bit more time driving for short periods is better until she gets use to it

    This was great, thanks for sharing! Did you have any issues with the cats getting restless with all three of them together? We're training our cats to ride in the car (3 girls, one 1.5 year old and then two 7 month old litter mates), and I'm nervous about freak outs being in a larger carrier together for a long time. Just curious what your experience was!

    • @IndoorOutdoorKat
      @IndoorOutdoorKat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For us, the most restlessness/talkativeness was just at the beginning of the day (first 10-15 minutes or so of driving) and after that they settled well. On the 3rd day they were actually so calm and quiet that I kept checking on them to make sure they were okay! I think taking breaks to let them out (either on leash outside or in the car) really really helped with this, also having the large kennel meant that they could cuddle or have their own space.

    I'm fairly nervous about traveling with my cat this summer 😥 he's a really sweet, well behaved boy, but that just makes me feel worse when I do something he hates. In every trip to the vet he's fenomenal once he's there, he once had to have his blood drawn 5 times and didn't make a peep, didn't try to run, never tries to attack... But the entire way TO the vet, and then back home, he NEVER stops vocalizing (as soon as he's home he's instantly chill again though). He's also not AT ALL receptive to treats when he's even the least bit nervous or suspicious, so that works against us sometimes for stuff like this.
    But the main problem is that I won't be traveling alone 😅 my father is hard of hearing and impatient, so I'm expecting that to be the biggest struggle. I can take my cat vocalizing (though we all know it's always hard to hear), and trying to do everything to make things better for him, but when you have other people in the car who aren't as patient it gets tough to keep them in check.
    Thank you for the tips, I'm looking everywhere to get things ready in advance!! 🙏💜💜

      I feel for you, have the same issue with my cat 😺 he won't stop vocalizing The moment we step into a car and next month we're going on a 12 hour road trip... Good luck I hope it goes smooth for you 🤞🤞🤞 we have not found a solution yet lol. We are now gonna try and use one of those big travel kennels like the one in the video and some anti nausea medication our vet prescribed (he said might be a reason for his distress) hopefully that works 🤞🤞

    • @donotgothroughlittledoor7734
      @donotgothroughlittledoor7734 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whateveruresolve2be those kennels look great, maybe they'll help you! ^^ I've been training my cat to go in his new carrier (it's nice and tall!) and he seems to like it, he even sleeps in it on colder days. I think I'm gonna try to get him used to hanging out in the car as well, while it's in the garage, so it's not such an unfamiliar place.
      You must be feeling pretty worried, fingers crossed the medication makes your bean feel a bit better. I really hope your trip can go without a hitch too, thank you for the encouragement ^^ let's hang in there! xD

    Great video! I’m abt to travel w/my 9-month kitten. NM to NC, so a similar route as yours! How were your cats & kittens in the hotel room? Did they try to hide in the room where you couldn’t get to them? That’s my concern. Thx!

    • @IndoorOutdoorKat
      @IndoorOutdoorKat  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question!! Our hotel room experience went way more smoothly than I expected! I'm not sure if the design was intentional because we it was a pet-friendly hotel, but we found that there weren't a whole lot of places for them to hide (ie, bed frame went to the floor, etc). Mind, they definitely wanted to explore, but they didn't end up anywhere tricky. We kept the bathroom and closet doors closed when not in use just in case, though, and the next time we need to have them in a hotel I'll probably bring a roll of painters tape to keep closed any cabinets that they could open!

    HI my cat get car sick. I live in the mountains so it makes it harder on him I guess. I tried recommended pills from the Vet, also a spray with pheromone (Feliway), nothing works, he gags, sometimes vomits when he ate less than 6 hours prior traveling and the last time he pooped instead since he had not eaten for over 6 hours. I use a hard shell kennel, the right size for him, put him on a big cushion so that he doesn't feel the road as much and that helped at the beginning. I need help because once in a while I need to bring him to the Vet or on a short trip (1h15 minutes) and it's really hard physically and mentally for him. He's a super sweet loving and caring cat. I hope that you or a nice reader can help . Thanks in advance, hoping !

    Hello, IndoorOutdoorKat! You seem to have had a pretty in depth 'trials and tribulations' crash course in cat keeping. I thought I'd ask if you would consider doing a (theoretical) video on emergency preparedness while having multiple cats.
    With all that is going on overseas, there seems to be a heightened interest and concern in what to do if needing to hunker down or "bug out", if you will, with your pets. Especially with the images and video we're all seeing in real-time now.
    Clearly, it doesn't need to be centered on that SHTF instance alone, but something geared towards cats/multiple cats in consideration of hunkering down ("bugging in") or leaving to a safer place. Be it due to a natural disaster, wildfire, or WORSE. 😬
    There seems to be an okay amount of content on pets in general or dogs, but not cats specifically. Especially when you consider the litter box situation. Best I could come across for some information with cats is on the subject of traveling with them, which is how I came across this video.
    Litter seems to be a heavy prospect to travel with. I have seen alternatives like pine pellets, which are lighter and can be bought cheaply in bulk, but is physically bulkier.
    What would be YOUR plan if faced with such a situation? Say, if you had to go to a shelter and had to remain there for a # of days? What if that shelter didn't allow pets. What if you broke down, ran out of gas, or (GF) got in a wreck, and had to resume on foot? What would you pack as first aid for them? How would you keep things light enough for traveling? Would you put things or cat boxes on some kind of hand cart for ease?
    I haven't owned a cat in the longest time so can speak to beyond the super basics. I know someone who does and I try to give the best advice I can on what seems to be the most logical/practical things to do but since I don't live with one on the daily and am not really exposed to new products, innovations, or the daily rigors. I am sure that someone who does can do better.
    Case in point, that collapsible carrier, which is pretty cool and a new one on me. There might be more stuff that is actually practical in a sea of gimmicky pet items.
    In any case, it would be cool to see a video on this and I'm sure it would give many out there peace of mind and power over their own personal cat caretaking situation. It's always cool to see comments where people chime in with their own preps and one-to-grow-on stories.
    Also, I like your presentation style. You sound like you've been through some shite in your own way with your 3 cat family there and came out rosy on the other end generally. No residual PTSD that I can tell. Seems like it was A LOT. 😉 It seems like you can be trusted with real real-life information. It might be a viral video of sorts in these trying times.

      This is an incredible, wonderful, amazing suggestion for a video. I would be absolutely delighted to make it. May I reference your comment in the video? You phrased it so eloquently and encapsulated a lot of issues I hadn't even considered (i.e., the lack of content on emergency preparedness for cats). Thank you so much for this suggestion, I'm really excited to put this video together!

      @@IndoorOutdoorKat Something just came to me regarding water procurement. I'm assuming that bleach treating water would likely be acceptable since many municipal water treatment systems put chlorine in water. But since certain animals have certain danger foods, I wonder if iodine (liquid or tablet) treated water would be safe in the quantities recommended for a human.
      I suppose if someone is evacuating something like a Grayl filter would be handy as a 1 unit, easy use thing, but they're expensive.
      Either way some kind of backup way to get/make clean water would also benefit the human caretaker, but also be safe for the cat. I know a lot of preppers say to have a workable "back up to the back up" or the skills to make up for a lack or loss of equipment.
      Sounds like a fire kit would be a benefit. Something compact enough like a tea or trick bday candle, Bic lighter, ferro rod, and Vaseline cotton balls seem to be the go-to's. And perhaps something like SODIS UV water filtering can be done on the fly. It's apparently recommended in 3rd world countries. Could work in conjunction with digging a coyote / gypsy / sipping well off to the side of a river or lake. ???
      I just found out you get more water by boiling down ice vs. packed snow because snow takes way longer. Or would it even matter to filter a cat's water since they would probably drink out of a puddle or other water source if feral / out in the wild.
      I did catch a SERES schoolntrained U.S. Ranger survival guy make a "snow bag" with a zip loc reinforced with duct tape and paracord to hang around the neck and put in btw a clothing layer which would melt by walking or working body temperature, which was interesting. Never seen that.
      Anyway, I guess a vet would know best on the bleach/iodine count, but just throwing that out there.
      I've also seen people dehydrate and can food and treats by more homemade pet food means as well. But it sounds like cats are more picky than dogs. So maybe people would need to start trying out recipes combinations now if they go this route. I came across a dog food brand that has a dehydrated product, but it's pricey, but when you consider the longer term storage (I think), I guess its an offset. I know kibble has a shorter term shelf life than canned, but canned cat food at the store can be hit or miss lately from what I've heard. Freeze drying is an even more so expensive prospects since those machine run into the thousands.
      Geez, this topic could be a whole series almost if you wanted to break down each category / potential circumstance.

      @@samiharahman9481 it went well! We stopped about every 2-3 hours for a potty break. I drive an SUV, so I laid the seats down and put his litter box down. Let him do his business, and we were good to go! Our vet also suggested a small dosage of Benadryl for him, so that worked wonders for his car anxiety and helped him sleep.
