Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sings "Chanson Triste" by Henri Duparc (1848-1933). Piano / Roger Vignoles. Recorded from the recital "Chanson de la France" , 1986.
I am a huge fan of Roger Vignoles and had the honor of performing with him many years ago in London. He is an amazing player -- See how Ms. Kanawa just floats on his flowing accompaniment.
Kiri and Roger Vignoles give us a delightful Chanson Triste. I would agree that in melodie the contemporary approach is for less scooping portamento , but if you listen to the recordings of singers who knew and worked under the direction of Duparc and Faure - such as Claire Croiza or Madeleine Grey - you will realise that the composer would probably not have objected to Kiri's approach at all. Times and tastes change - even within the space of 30 years.

I've heard much better. The execution of the arpeggiated figuration in the piano part is far too uneven; and for all the beauty of her voice, Dame Kiri's French elocution is neither clear nor accurate.
until you can sing for 10 minutes what we classically trained singers can do for an hour in a recital sit down!! It's always a "critic" who stands by to only criticize and harshly judge people! She has a career that has spanned over 40 years! What kind of operatic career have you had? We're still waiting....
@@coreychristensen7068 Your hostility is staggering. I have never claimed to have had a career as a singer. But I have had a reasonably successful career as a cellist.

really sad song.
Kiri te kanawa
I completely agree! Kiri is doing too much scooping for my taste, but I'll gladly listen just for this wonderful accompanist!
@laraandlars This is just a somewhat old fashioned interpretation, I think. I'd bet this is from the late 80s.
you overstate your case, but there is a little of what you say in this interpretation
too slurpy if that is a word. She scoops all over the place. She has a beautiful voice, but has forgotten good technique somewhere along the way.
