    I am Latvian, living in Riga and I just saw your video, it was fun to watch. I have 12 close friends (women) from whom 4 are 180-183 cm tall, 5 are 172-175 cm and 3 are 162 cm tall, I am 182 cm myself. Not to mention, 9 of us 13 are single, and only 1 who is taken lives in Riga, so there you go. This summer I was at a birthday party and me and my cousin were the only single non-pregnant women there. It felt surreal and not usual :D
    Thank you for your video and kind words about Latvians! :)

      Hi Elina,
      First of all I want to thank you for your comment as it means a lot to me, for a few reasons.
      Firstly I appreciate that you managed to see and understand the "spirit" of the video. You have no idea how many people have fed me with statistical information to prove me wrong!!!
      Also my experience with the local people has been really good, so my kind words come from the heart, although there too, a lot of local people have INSISTED that I am wrong.
      Wishing you all the best and remember to enjoy your journey👌👍

    No idea where you got the 7-to-1 ratio from, but it's definitely not accurate. Yes, there are more women than men here, but that surplus comes entirely from the 50+ demographic. So unfortunately Latvia isn't the haven of single princesses some westerners fantasize about.

    From Wikipedia: In 2017, there were 1,054,433 females and 895,683 males living in Latvian territory. Every year, more boys are born than girls. Until the age of 39, there are more males than females. From the age of 70, there are 2.3 times as many females as males.
    There are more women than men just because the life expectancy of women is higher. 7:1 only for 90 year old grandparents. Latvia is a paradise only for 90 year old grandfathers🤣🤣🤣

    Population, female (% of total population) in Latvia was reported at 53.91 % in 2020, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources. That is not 7 to 1. In 2020, male to female ratio for Latvia was 85.49 males per 100 females. So yes, there are more women, but definitely not 7 to 1. Not even 2 to 1.

      I looked this up as well. While Latvia does have the highest ratio of women to men in the EU, the European Commission reports Latvia has 17% more women than men. In second place for disparity of the sexes is Lithuania, with 14% more women than men. Only 4 member states had more men than women - Malta, Luxembourg, Sweden, and Slovenia.
      A thought that made me chuckle came about when the female clerk was talking down men. If that perspective was common among Latvian women, well, there's your answer... Most of the men left! 😉

      The video was filmed mostly in the old town which is a very touristy place with expensive real estate and entertainment venues. It's like a business card for Riga, so obviously kept clean and not attractive to homeless people. It may not look like LA or NY, but there are many other areas where you can see graffiti & homeless people. Latvia is my home and I love it, but don't be fooled by everything you see in travel brochures. Each city has a dark side and Riga is no exception.

    When I was still living in Germany, I had my "Latvian chapter" spending about 4 years 3-4 times a year going there. Ended up with a BEAUTIFUL Latvian gf...she looked like a young Grace Kelly...stunning. She taught me all the Latvian history and I taught her the Germanic and WW1/WW2 history....all over that crazy garlic fried bread, good Latvian beer and "Balsam". If you ever visit Latvia see Riga of course but a train ride out to see the German Teutonic Knights castle in Sigulda ..amazing. Also, seeing and touring the Kurland region was interesting to me as it was one of the German Army's last famous encirclement (Kesselschlachte) of WW2. My gal pal Elina finished her PhD. and ended up being Latvias representative in the EU in Strasbourg and Brussels. I miss her...and hope she's doing well. Viva Latvia and the proud Let history!

    In my opinion, I think it will be more likely to be out 4 men there is 5 women. Because of this statistic. 'In 2020, male to female ratio for Latvia was 85.49 males per 100 females. Male to female ratio of Latvia increased from 76.25 males per 100 females in 1950 to 85.49 males per 100 females in 2020 growing at an average annual rate of 0.83%.' So probably 2 out 1 or 3 women out 1 man.

    I was in Riga, just once in April of 1996. I was traveling in Eastern Europe particularly as it hadn't been too long since the the collapse of communism and the breakup of the Soviet Union. It was still cold at that time of the year, and there was still deep snow in the outlying areas of the city. But, it was sunny the complete time. I did not notice the disparity between the sexes, though I did notice the large number of striking women. However, lovely women were also in abundance in Warsaw, Prague and Kiev. It was in Kiev, however, that I noticed that the women were particularly tall. Eastern Europe was an amazing place for beautiful women, though the language barrier was quite significant, English was not commonly spoken in Eastern Europe back then and I only some basic phrases in the local languages. Turned out that Russian, the language I had been learning before my trip, didn't cut it, except with native Russian speakers. I met a gorgeous Russian woman in Riga (a transplant from Kaliningrad) who introduced me to her circle of friends from other parts of the former Soviet Union - Georgia, Ukraine etc. But, there were not Latvians by any means.
    But back to Latvia, in 1996 it was not ready for tourists and I did not find the people friendly at all. Not hostile, but unsmiling people who didn't seem to care. I do recall cashing a $20 traveler's check (forget using an ATM to get cash in Riga in 1996) did require a trip to a bank, where the staff treated me like J.P. Morgan, had me sit at a desk while the manager got me the cash. Just getting out was a bit of a hassle. The travel agent in Warsaw had no trouble getting me a train ticket to Riga, but nobody in Riga knew how to get a train ticket back. But, that was a different era when the most common cars were Ladas and half of the population wasn't from there.

    The whole question of gender disparity could be answered if you checked the most recent population census for Latvia (printed copies are probably available at the library). Although, my experience informs me most cities in the world have more women than men but in the countryside the majority of the adult population is men (juvenile population is fairly equal in gender numbers in the countryside).

      And far fewer casualties.
      Australia commited 50,000 to 60,000 troops in Vietnam; 520 killed and 2,400 injured.
      In World War II, close to a million men were drafted; 30,000 died and 65,000 injured.

      Roughly two decades have passed; and that won't be enough to fill the void left behind by those missing.
      That is the point of my inquiry: if WWII was responsible for it, and if the Vietnam war just aggravated it further still.

    I think the important element missing in this discussion is the age distribution.
    Is the predominance of females age dependant?
    Is it a fact that as you move up into the older age brackets, there are proportionately more women?
    Knowing Latvia's history and its involvement in most of the wars of the past century, it is logical to assume that a large proportion of their manpower were killed off.
    This would leave a huge number of widows and single women in the war related demographic.
    However, this may have been compensated by a current replacement with the younger marriage age demographics.
    So the marriage ages would be evenly distributed, but the war related demographic would be predominately women.
    So the math works out to an aggregate of seven women for each male.

      Probably the tallest and strongest(tales of stonelifting, wrestling etc) were selected as Wikings, and also during the wars in 16, 17 century, a large portion of holland was occupied of wikings during 900-1000, and Latvia was raided by wikings. Riga and some other parts belonged to sweden and had large soldiers guarding it who were very tall, The king selected the largest people from finland and sweden to fight. The blend of russians, scandinavians, larger types of finns, and Latvias old mix of indigeus people and slavic people made it not so many inbreed small people as in some other countrys.

    I suspect the real ratio is around 5:4 women/men, or something like that. A 7:1 ratio is simply impossible. That's a wartime statistic, if ever. There is nowhere in the world where the birthrate even nears such numbers.

    The statistic might be true, however you then need to look at the age demographic.
    The statistic is likely taking account all ages and most likely group where this statistic is is true is for the older generation. WW2 and the soviet occupation took heavy toll on the population, especially the men and the boys. So over the years that adds up.
    Personally I've seen a huge disproportion in the elders. The younger people are mostly balanced, however I've often seen around 10 grandmothers for every 1 grandfather that anyone still has around in their family. How long people live is important as well. I barely know any male that's older than 70 yet I don't have enough fingers on my hand to count the amount of females that I know who are over the age of 90.

      I think it was more a situation of a couple of Latvian guys showing off and exaggerating a little, however the disproportion is very apparent to me.
      But on a more serious note, the hardship that this region has faced over the years is overwhelming and very interesting for learn about.

    I've read some comments. Unfortunatly I got a different experience about latvian ladies. Every single girl I meet had a boyfriend, I might see couple singles who wasn't interested at all. Most of them looked very spoiled by guys attention to them. Especially if they are pretty. I was thinking maybe there are problem with me, but I've never had any problems to meet and date girls anywhere else. I talked to some really good looking guys in a night clubs and they all were saying that's a huge problem for them to hook someone. I
    ve been in many places in Europe, such as Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Ukraine e.t.c. the girls were super friendly! I couldn'd say the same about Riga, looks like most of the girls up there are really hating men's. Exactly how the lady said at the gas station 6:35.

    • @morgianasartre6709
      @morgianasartre6709 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no consistent definition of the area eastern europe covers but more often than not the baltics are considered eastern europe, I've never met a latvian who thinks we are northern europe either.

    • @cyborgjanis8247
      @cyborgjanis8247 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@morgianasartre6709 Yes, it literally is defined by culture, language, geographic location, ethnicity and history on both EuroVoc and the geoscheme of the United Nations.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_geoscheme
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EuroVoc
      But only in the American definition of CIA, the Baltic States are included in the Eastern Europe. But it is worth mentioning, that CIA only had one value- recent history. So they included all Eastern Block countries in the Eastern Europe.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_Factbook
      And as in Europe- businesses often work within their region, which explains why there are tons of Nordic companies within Latvia- SwedBank, Nordea, ScandiWeb, Skandi Motors, Hesburger, Rimi and the list goes on.

    • @Gachello
      @Gachello 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@morgianasartre6709 It's correct that there is no consistency. According to UN Latvia is in Northern Europe. Geographically Latvia is situated more to north than Denmark and southern cities of Sweden, therefore it makes sense for UN to call it as Northern country. But historically western Europe used to put Latvia in Eastern Europe, perhaps, because of the Soviet union that used to be to the east of western Europe more than 30 years ago and shared similar history as many eastern European countries. In my opinion nobody is correct - it should be Northeast Europe :)

    • @J.E.E
      @J.E.E  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi guys,.
      Being the one who made the statement, I feel like I should give my input.
      There are conflicting ideas as to its geographic location, however the most important thing I would like to say is that I don't mean any offense when I say Eastern Europe.
      It simply is the way I have known the European devide ever since I was a child! " The iron curtain"
      Obviously maps are layed out with North, South, East and West.
      Keeping that in mind, if Scandinavia is northern Europe and Sapin is Southern Europe, then where does Belgium or France fall into? just Europe? Western Europe? Central western Europe?
      Portugal is more wester than France and in the same time zone as UK and Ireland. Is Portugal Southern Europe or Western Europe or South Western Europe.
      Because of my many years of travel in the region, the Channel name is actually derived from a nick name of mine not necessarily a label of where I make footage.
      Once again this is be a complex issue that will never yield one correct answer or conclusion.
      The main thing for me is that I love Eastern Europe, North America, Sub Saharan Africa, and the middle East... Actually I love it all and where it falls geographically will not give me predisposed ideas of a place and its people.
      All the best guys and thank you so much for watching.

    I went on line to check the official national poplutation statistics.
    Women ARE more numerous than men, but not to the extent in your video.
    The figure WAS 75% men in post war decades, but men are NOW catching up - the figure now stands at 85%.
    So, to put this into numbers -
    for every 6 males, there are 7 females.
    As international gender balances go, that's still quite a good figure for any bachelor, but it's not quite the paradise that you promote.
    The key thing is to work hard on having a good body - when you've got that, most places in the world are good!!!!

    • @mp1335
      @mp1335 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's the thing. If you look deeper into the statistics you will see that there's more young men than young women. It's just that older men in the Baltic states die relatively young. There's LITERALLY several times more women than men when we're talking age 60+. That's what warps the statistics. It baffles me when people believe that for some reason that means there's much more young women than men. There was no recent war, lmao

      Yeah it bullcrap about them being single too. Most of somewhat attractive Latvian women are always taken. Trust me I know I am a latvian also. Only women who have trouble here meeting men are women over 50 because of older men shortage. Just like in the west they aim for super hot guys and if they can't get those they are ''single'' lol.
