  • Terryl L. Givens, "Joseph Smith's American Bible: Radicalizing the Familiar"
The 2009 Laura F. Willes Book of Mormon Studies lecture, presented October 8, on the campus of Brigham Young University.
A transcript of the lecture is available at bit.ly/ZXZ3t2.
Terryl L. Givens is professor of literature and religion and occupant of the James Bostwick Chair of English at the University of Richmond in Virginia. He has authored several books on Mormonism, including "Viper on the Hearth: Mormons, Myths, and the Construction of Heresy," "By the Hand of Mormon: The American Scripture that Launched a New World Religion," "People of Paradox: A History of Mormon Culture," and a volume on the Book of Mormon in Oxford University Press's "Very Short Introduction" series.
Established in 2007, the Laura F. Willes Center for Book of Mormon Studies promotes a concentrated study of the Book of Mormon both as an ancient text and as an important publication in the modern world. As part of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, the Willes Center advances efforts to understand the historical and spiritual value of this significant ancient source.

      BOOK OF MORMON historical errors
In looking at the Book of Mormon we need to compare the people’s living conditions & environment with those of the native Indians. For example, what type of plants does the book mention? Were these plants in America at that time? What animals were said to be in the area? Did the Indians have knowledge of metal working as stated in the Book of Mormon? What was the Indians' written language? How did they travel? How do the claims in the Book of Mormon compare with archaeology? What evidence has been discovered?
The Book of Mormon talks about:
      • wheat (Mosiah 9:9)
      • horses (1 Nephi 18:25)
      • chariots (Alma 18:9-11; 20:6; 3 Nephi 3:22)
      • cows (Enos 21)
      • elephants (Ether 9:19)
      • silk (Alma 1:29; 4:6; Ether 9:17)
      • linen (Mosiah 10:5; Helaman 6:13; Ether 10:24)
      • money-pieces of gold and silver (Alma 11:3-20)
      • steel (2 Nephi 5:15; Jarom 1:8; Ether 7:9)
NOT ONE of these items was in America before the Spanish arrived ! NONE. This is a shining example of the nature of Mormon fraud, sadly. #

Nice "drive-by" from Spaseebo. I see there's no reply - perhaps he's actually reading the information this time instead of just doing a cut and paste. While it's a huge work, Sorenson's magnum opus is a wonderful volume. The footnotes alone are worth reading, certainly more information than the regurgitations from specious anti-Mormon works that litter the interwebs.

@@Spaseebo Most important: where are the artifacts? When Roman armies march into the UK there are today lots of artifacts from their presence. If 4 million people congregate in an area, there should be metal objects, coins, pieces of uniforms and weapons, etc.
