This was great! Working on a project for school and gave me a great starting point before reading the actual 36 page Supreme Court case

I believe the first time I picketed was when I was a little girl with the Save Our Schools campaign, and the last time a group and I picketed was against Prostitution, when I was running for either Congress or City Council. That's it. 02-29-2029 I have never picketed a funeral at all, and have not been to many. I officiated over one funeral, my Grandmom Pearl's funeral who died in her '90's.

Viewers should compare this case with Virginia v. Black, 538 U.S. 343 (2003), and Whitney v. California, 274 U.S. 357 (1927), as well as Miller v. California, 413 U.S. 15 (1973). Notably, this case could have been prosecuted against the church under public obscenity doctrine, since their choice of language was obscene, and as Miller stated, obscenity has never been thought to be under the umbrella of first amendment protection.

Killing for million arabs in the middle east wars has nothing to do with free speech shut the fuck up. You are not righteous. Not even brave. Being a soldier doesn't even make the top 5 most dangerous jobs in US list, you/they are over there killing for sport playing video games killing people in real life with drone strikes. Quit your job, give up.

You're not defending anything except your vanity and inability to get a real job. The fact the military attempted to shut WBC down for their speech speaks to the fact they hate free speech. WBC does more to protect free speech in the USA than the military does.

@@thramagen , well said. How did our freedom get to middle east? If you are fighting for my freedom please stop. Our freedom of speech is in the hands of our corrupt government.

Question if the Westboro Baptist Church hates the government and U.S. so much then why live here just saying. Food for thought.

+Joshua Leonard That is a very good question, and one I think is best answered by Shirley Roper. I would presume they want to make the country conform to their beliefs (however extreme we may feel they are) and that is best done by being on the frontline. Just a guess!

Submissive aggressive demonstration, they could have demonstrated anywhere anytime, no need to do it near this mans funeral very distasteful, and this man that perished went to war to protect his country, and that’s how you choose to diss him, shame on you Baptist church, then you have the audacity to preach what God would and would not approve of, God wouldn’t approve of you Phelps and Baptist’s demonstrators !

“Emotional distress”? You’re a military veteran and you’re gonna be in danger because of hateful words? I fully support veterans and found what that Baptist “church” did was disgusting, but you can’t make a law stopping those people from expressing the ideas that they have on public land. Words and ideas are not physical attacks, government attacks ultimately turn into a gun pointed at your head to enforce laws

Samuel Alito is fully delusional in aledging that any “vicious verbal assault” took place. Snyder did not see the signs at the event, the protesters complied with the law, none of the messages on the signs were personally directed at either Matthew or Albert Snyder, and the only wind he caught that the protest even took place was on the television that night. Alito argued that the words “God Hates You” on one of the signs were directed at Snyder himself (even though they have repeatedly used that sign), because their was a flier that the church posted about the protest that referenced Snyder by name. However, Snyder would not think that unless he read the flier, and for him to do so would be completely voluntary and at his own risk of emotional distress! Furthermore, no words were exchanged at the protest, no profanities, and certainly no vicious verbal assault. Ludicrous.

Wonderful job, except you are factually WRONG about Westboro being 30 feet from the processional. We were out of sight and hundreds of feet from the processional. Further friend, you don't need to characterize our words, just tell the words. You are going to stand before God in the judgment, and you can explain your whining about our Bible message. God does not care what you think and He does not respect the disobedience of this nation! America is Doomed! Also, I rejoice to note that J Alito, prepared by God for this hour, ensured that the writings of WBC against the filthy nation, itemizing your proud sins against God, will be forever contained in the record of the most powerful court (by the hand of our Lord Jesus Christ) in the world. #JesusDidIt #WeAreThankful Thanks for sharing.

+Shirley Roper Thank you for your comment and for pointing out my error. I misspoke. The opinion states that your demonstration was 200-300 feet away from the procession. Snyder v. Phelps, 131 S.Ct. 1207, 1214 (2011). I sincerely apologize. I will annotate the video to correct the error.

The Bible instructs us to bless those who curse us and to not curse them back. I'm pretty sure having signs that says Thank God for Dead Soldiers outside a funeral for a fallen American soldier goes against that entirely.
