The stats on Soul Edge vary per game, and what's worse, per fighter. Some fighters end up with a high-damage, unblockable and vampiric weapon, others get a middling-damage weapon that sucks their life instead. In fairness, the first ever wielder in the series is a zombie-pirate who rips off his own face in the very intro of the game, so it's not like you weren't warned before you picked the damned thing up.
Soul Edge's biggest curse isn't even in-game. Tim Langdell, the owner of Edge Magazine, had a dirty habit of siccing his lawyers at everything even remotely game-related that had "Edge" in the title, so the the first "Soul Edge"-game had to be relabeled "Soul Blade", and all subsequent sequels, "Soul Calibur". That's right, Langdell, I just called you a curse upon everything related to gaming, you goblin. Sue me.

for me it's definitely the Rocket Pistol from Resident Evil Village, for all the bullshit you have to go through to get it(including beating the game on the hardest difficulty) it's rather underwhelming and the weapons you've fully upgraded by that point are much more powerful and it doesn't even have infinite ammo to boot, you have to craft it and it takes more resources then any other ammo type so there's really a situation where it's useful.

Actually the harbinger in fable is good if you plan your play through around getting it, because there were 2 methods of getting it, one of which was meeting a high enough physique threshold, and the other way was putting in enough physique points (can’t remember exactly how many) after your first attempt at pulling it out. So if you put 0 points into physique before you made the first pull attempt, you could get it fairly early and it was a beast of a weapon for a long time.

I don't know if it was just just too obvious to need mentioning, but I would have thought they would have pointed out that the Casey Bat was an obvious reference to the poem "Casey at the Bat". Tifa's Premium Heart in the original Final Fantasy VII. Due to a flaw in the damage calculation, which may or may not have been intentional, this weapon actually starts out weaker than Tifa's other options until she has sufficiently built up her limit break, but then it resets once she uses her limit. Had it not been for an extra set of brackets in the damage calculation formula, this would have been the definition of an ultimate weapon.

    • @Fighter600
      @Fighter600 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It wasn't a flaw. All the Ultimate weapons in FF7 had stipulations to them, Like Premium Heart doing more damage the higher her limit gauge was.
Clouds Ultima Weapon Damage was based on his current HP.
Cids Venus Gospel was based on his current MP.
Barrets Missing Score was based on the amount of AP the Materia that was equipped to it had.
Vincents Death Penalty was based on how many enemies he has personally killed.
      Etc, etc.

    • @MISAKA-cd2hq
      @MISAKA-cd2hq ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@cphtfluke7565 No, these are not flaws, intentional or otherwise. The weapons have damage multipliers based on other factors that, far more often than not, are positive. They do start at a damage penalty, but very quickly get above 100% damage, and for most cases are a non-issue.
Cloud's/Cait Sith's weapons are only below 100% damage if you're in yellow HP, which you should only be in for brief periods of time, and that turn is likely better spent healing anyway.
Cid's/Red XIII's weapons, again, are only below 100% damage if you're in yellow MP, which usually means you haven't been using the weapon anyway.
Tifa's weapon is tied to both limit level and limit gauge fill percentage, and is at 100% at 1/4 full at limit level 4. The limit gauge mechanics are a little complicated, but in general getting hit by a boss or big trash once is usually enough to get her over 100%, especially if she's in Fury status.
Barret's weapon you'd basically have to explicitly try to get under 100%, since it's based on total AP acquired on slotted materia. 100% is 160k AP. For context, each trash monster you're fighting in the section of the game you acquire it in gives 80-100 AP to each slotted materia, so you're getting around 250-300 AP per trash fight, per slotted materia, before multipliers.
Vincent's weapon is the only one that's likely to be below 100% at the time you get it and requires some dedicated grinding to get to a usable level, but it has the highest ceiling out of any of them.

    • @cphtfluke7565

Not to mention that Wilhelm pairs sp well with it due to having weapon damage skills, classmods, and a melee override that makes him deal extra melee and exosive damage, which frozen envies are weak to. The Fable one: if you don’t get it the first time, the game essentially marks your Strength, and then lets you pull it after you’ve upgraded your Strength stat twice after your first attempt. If I remember right. It’s actually a pretty useful exploit if you can get there with base Strength (for example as a Skill or Will build) and then just pump two levels of Strength and BAM you’ve got a great sword to back up your main stat.

My entry would be Sparda from Devil May Cry 1.
An ultimate weapon so powerful, it allowed a human to turn into a demon in the prequel. Yet when Dante awakens it after (seemingly) killing “Nelo Angelo” the weapon flat out sucks.
It doesn’t do anything the other swords can easily do and you can’t Devil Trigger with it equipped. You also lose the ability to switch to Ifrit at the press of a button so long as it’s equipped.
It’s not until you face Mundas, the Final boss of the game that it’s actually any good. But until then, you’re better off just switching back to Alistor.

Re The Excalabastard: One of the things you didn't mention is that it spawns only once per character. To explain, Borderlands has game plus modes, namely "True" and "Ultimate" Vault Hunter modes. Level progression is tied with this, meaning that you have to play the game through three times with the same character in order to get to max level. (You CAN grind your way to be at max level sooner, but that is what it is, a grind.) If you pick up the Excalabastard during the first playthrough, it does NOT regenerate in subsequent playthroughs. You have to start a whole new character and try not to be impatient this time.
As a side note, I always suggest a fourth playthrough on a character, just so you can properly compare the gear/loot to each other.

    • @mentisfugit

If you play with a friend though, the Excalibastard becomes farmable through a simple exploit.
      1. Both players enter Stanton's Liver and dash to the Excalibastard. You've only got a handful of scavs to bolt past and there's no point in fighting them.
      2. Host pulls Excalibastard from the rock but Friend picks it up.
      3. Friend exits cleanly from the game, bearing the Excalibastard away in their inventory.
      4. Host crashes out of their game (Alt-F4 on PC, for example.) This means the Host's progress is lost, including the fact they picked up the Excalibastard.
      5. Begin another game. Host will start in Stanton's Liver now, your Friend can join you again, and you can repeat steps 1 to 4.
      6. Begin yet another game. Friend drops one of the two Excalibastards in their possession, and now you both have one.
      7. Or you can repeat over and over and use three Excalibastards in the Grinder to produce another random on-level legendary. Depends on your boredom threshold.
Disclaimer 1: This works for me on PC. Can't speak for what you have to do in step 4 if you're on a console.
Disclaimer 2: You may feel a little dirty for using such a cheap trick.

The Handcannon in the Resident Evil 4 Remake, it takes the most effort to get out of the magnums, being a bonus weapon and all, it's maximum damage is outpaced by the Broken Butterfly since its damage has been nerfed since the original, and although it has infinite ammo when you get its exclusive upgrade, it also has massive recoil, which results in it taking forever to fire a second shot, if you're surrounded by enemies you're screwed as a result of this, plus if you get the cat ears you can use the Broken Butterfly and other guns with infinite reloads, rendering the Handcannon completely worthless as a result.

Not an ultimate weapon, but the Yoshiyuki in Final Fantasy VII was the worst for me. Its damage increases when other party members die, giving Cloud a better chance at winning if he loses people along the way. BUT it’s stats are so low, that Cloud is basically doing zip at the beginning of the fight, almost requiring you to off your allies to do any real damage. So if you’re in a boss fight, you’ll be killing your party members, and then praying that Cloud can hold his own without dying himself.

For me, it's from a underrated RPG franchise Grandia, specifically Grandia 2. The Granasaber. This sword was hyped up to be unstoppable blades, wielded by the God Granas, capable of cleaving the world to create canyons, originally used by Granas himself to cut the evil god Valmar to pieces prior to the game's setting. Then you get to wield one and it's just barely stronger than the 2nd highest sword and has a mediocre, "Reduce SP consumption by 15%" effect, lame.

For an addition to this series, I'd suggest Final Fantasy X. The ultimate ("celestial") weapon for Auron in the game is "Masamune". On the plus side, it retains the effect of all celestial weapons in that it ignores the defense stat of the enemy. To make it useful - just like all the other celestial weapons - you also need to find the Crest and the Sigil to power it up. The ones for Auron are not the hardest, but are very tedious and require large amounts of monster-capturing for the monster arena, which can be annoying when the monsters you require just refuse to appear in random battles.
Once powered up, Auron's weapon has the special characteristic of dealing more damage the lower his health is. In the original Japanese release of the game, this was a straight up bonus. It dealt regular damage at 100% HP and dealt more than 4x as much damage when down to 1 HP. This was changed in all other releases, causing the weapon to deal regular damage when at 70% of max HP, half damage when at full HP and only slightly more than 2x damage when down to 1 HP.
When you consider that farming and upgrading these weapons requires so much time and effort that the only things dangerous to you are optional- or super-lategame-enemies and most of them can deal 80-90% of your HP with a single attack, Masamune loses most of it's appeall because keeping Auron at low enough health to do just regular damage means that he's at a high risk of being one-shot by the stuff you're facing.

It comes in the form of 2 skills obtained from defeating both minamoto no yoshitsune and minamoto no yorimitsu from the dlc. The catch? The drop rate is abysmally low. The skills are VERY good though.
The one from yoshitsune is a four hit attack that consumes anima to fire waves of light. It deals massive damage if all hits connect and restores anima if you hit the enemy with the blade.
The one from yorimitsu is a dual chasing slice that does very mediocre damage but is by far the best skill for closing distance. It also staggers most humans.

I've started the presequel like half a dozen times now and I never get more than a few hours in for some reason. I love the low G mechanics and I absolutely adore the general Borderlands formula, but somehow I've never been able to sink more than a couple hours at a time into the presequel. And IDK about you lot, but if I barely got past the tutorial on a game six months ago, I'm starting a new game next time if only to refresh my memory. Incidentally, games i quit in the tutorial and came back to months later include God of War 2016, DOOM 2016, and all 3 recent Farsassins Cried Ubisoft titles. I don't bloody buy a game unless it's ostensibly good, but as a GamerTM I have a back catalogue too lol. I make WAY too many Ninja Gaiden references, but the heck with it, here's another. In both the vanilla OG Xbox game and the Sigma version, there is a wooden sword that you are given allegedly "to practice." If you take it to the blacksmith, you'll notice that it can be upgraded for literally thousands of valuable karma points, the game's hard combat earned version of money. Do this about five times, after hours of grinding or ignoring other upgrades and precious health and magic potions, and the wooden sword turns into, um, a thing. A really big, slow, heavy thing, like the Final Fantasy 7 sword. Now, it isn't that this guy is a weak weapon- no, it does do blistering amounts of damage. But it is painfully slow to use, leaves you open to being pummeled to death by the series' notoriously cheap missile and arrow attacks from unseen snipers or snatched up by unblockabke grab attacks. Couple this with how ridiculously long it'll take you to craft the Focker, and there is little need to do so unless you crave unlocking the master ninja difficulty level. And if you hate yourself that much, it would be easier to play a Souls game, or seek counseling.

Star Ocean 3 had a habit of giving you characters' ultimate weapons at the very end of a long string of optional post-game super dungeons. You even get one from defeating the strongest optional enemy in the entire game. By that point it's like... WHY? The game is over--officially. There's no more content.
Nioh 2's ultimate weapon being almost exclusively a cutscene weapon is wild. The only way you can even use it is if you get specific skills dropped from two very specific bosses, I think. In the DLCs. So RNG.
FFX's Celestial Weapons. They're great when you max them out. But the tasks you're expected to do to max some of them out are absurd. And you can make weapons just as good, with enough patience.

Aircraft Carrier, Advance Wars Dual Strike.
Ships in the Advance Wars games are pretty much all the same story: too weak and fragile to justify the enormous cost of building them. The carrier is the worst offender as it is the most expensive unit in the whole game at a whopping 30000 funds to deploy. It can one-shot any aircraft that flies into its enormous attack range, but it can be countered by the battle copter, a unit that your opponent is basically guaranteed to already have several of by that point in the match.
By sending two battle copters (total cost of 18000), your opponent can completely shut down that carrier you spent so much money on. The best you can hope to do is shoot down one copter, but after that, the second one will absolutely get inside the carrier's minimum range, at which point it can't do anything except die.
You COULD keep an air unit of your own around to protect the carrier, seeing as the ship can resupply aircraft, but at that point you're adding more money to the overall cost of keeping it operational, far more than it's actually worth. The fighter does the exact same job as the carrier for only 20000 funds, has a much larger effective range, can defend itself against direct attacks in the air, and can even be used for other things like body-blocking enemy units.

Not a weapon per se, but the One Hit Kill moves in Pokemon.
Only a handful of Pokemon know them naturally, but some can still be taught them, and at base default stats completely unaltered these moves only have 5 attempts to be used and have an incredibly low accuracy rate of 30%. These moves also cannot be used on Pokemon with a high level than the one using the move, which is what you would want to do in most cases if you are desperate enough to even dedicate time to using these moves in the heat of battle anyway. On top of the roadblocks like level, accuracy, and such being in place, there are also to consider the targets resistances as Horn Drill still will not work against Ghost types being that it is Normal type move. So not only do you have to meet a bunch of conditions, you have only 5 shots at trying to make this move land, if your Pokemon is even still standing in battle while you try to get these moves off correctly. At which point you might as well just battled it normally or switched to a more accommodating Pokemon. There are ways to increase the changes of it landing, but it almost becomes pointless through all the effect that could have just been spent having a normal battle. And in the off chance you are actually facing a Pokemon with a higher level in which case the move automatically fails no matter what then you now have 1 move locked out for the battle which only leaves you 3 that you are now able to use.

Whatever, at least it’s super strong, right? Wrong. It’s actually weaker than many other final stage weapons. It does get a durability and power buff against specific types of enemies but even then it’s power is still weaker than several other weapons in the game.

The Ultima spell, feared for its power and thus sealed away by the ancients, requiring about a third of the plot to unseal and obtain along with major character death, is bugged and cannot surpass about 500 damage. There is actully a "bad" ultimate weapon that I like a lot.
The Soulcanon from "Fuga Melodies of the Steel".
The game is about a groupe of adorable wholesome anthropomorphic animal children that go on a quest to save there families.
You start out with this weapon and it can instant kill any boss in the game.
Its that games equivalent to Yugiohs Exodia. Using it is an instant win no matter what.
The downside is that it requires a childs life in order to work. In other words the player needs to sacrefice a party member in order to use it.
Now if you enjoy turning innocent children in to canon fuel you going to have a lot of fun with this weapon.
But should you care about the life of these little fluff balls you will never use this weapon.
But I like how its presents alone, is a grim reminder that these children put there life on the line.
It starting to glow when there HP drops to low (they have one shared HP bar) is kinda scary.
It makes every victory all the more satisfying. One more boss defeated without loosing a child.
They might take a bit longer but with there courage and there teamwork they can achive the same effect as ths all mighty weapon, the destruction of there enemy, without lossing one of there own. Thats an empowering feel.
So while this weapon is useless to me I apriate its presents a lot.
In the sequel things get more intense. When the HP of the party drop low enough in a boss fight, a countdown starts and when it reaches zero and the boss is not dead yet the soulcanon fires, and they loose a crew member without giving the player the choice not to use it. An interesting way to mix it things up.

Heck, something like the Ancient Short Sword can deal greater damage to a Guardian Stalker than a full power Master Sword when you combine the Ancient Proficiency set bonus with the 1.5x damage bonus that Guardian and Ancient weapons can deal to Guardian enemies.

The Specter weapons from Mass Effect should have been on this list, yes they are the most powerful weapons in the game, but the strongest versions of them just aren’t worth getting, 3 reasons, 1: each weapon is expensive af, unless you sell EVERYTHING you get, you can’t even get enough money in a single play through to get all of them, so, while you are saving up money and selling all your good equipment, you are actually making the game WAY harder than it needs to be, 2: even if you get enough money in one play through, you still can’t get them until play through 2, because that’s how you gain access to them, by beating the game, reason 3: though you can’t get there best versions until play through 2, there are slightly weaker versions of the same weapons available almost right of the bat in play through 1, the only real difference is that they have slightly lower stats, but they are also MUCH cheaper, and they are still strong enough that they decimate just about every enemy in the game, especially if you give them the right upgrades

I've got another bad point of getting Excalibur II. It takes having Steiner in your party.

This may not count, but the Rapier from 'Wing Commander' game. The ship is trash compared to the Raptor. The Raptor had better armor than the Rapier, and the Raptor had the mass driver and neutron canon compared to the weak laser and neutron. To compound the damage difference is the ability to even hit anything. The Mass driver is faster than the neutron, but at least they were close so you could get all your projectiles impacting at longer ranges. The Laser was way faster than the neutron, so you had to choose if you were going to hit with the laser or the neutron at longer ranges, meaning you only could use both weapons on a target up close or if the target was moving towards or away from you and not perpendicular.

Undertale. The "real dagger". This superior dagger is super fancy, and worthless, because by then only one enemy left. And that enemy will just dodge everything.
