People self-radicalise, they're not radicalised by others. Children, in their formative years, can be shaped & formed by those who they spend most time with but adults are much more fully formed. Their 'programming' directs them, their prejudices (we all have them) allow for quick decisions to be made. Confirmation bias is a thing, propaganda works the same as advertising, some people are much more primed to buy than others.

@@symmo1969 Enough people are influenced by advertising for it to work. That is why it is the largest and most profitable industry in the world. The trouble is, people cannot know how it is affecting their thinking. It’s designed that way. At one level, you get it and so you feel in control. Certainty is a dangerous delusion - it can lead to all kinds of horrors. We need to hang on to doubt. Keep asking questions - of yourself as well.

Dear James and the descent caller: as a Turkish born now German citizen for 15 years now listening to you from Germany, I also feel lucky to be able to listen to you people, because all the topics that are subject of your discussions I can relate to the situation in Germany.

Before Brexit, the UK was making significant strides in promoting equality across faiths and disabilities. Positive messages of inclusivity were everywhere-in the news, arts, design, and retail. UK creatives were proud of the progress. But Brexit came and, in an instant, shattered over 20 years of inclusivity efforts. Since then, the division has only deepened.

This reminds me of the episode covering the online rabbitholes of the YT side bar recommended videos, specifically the phrase 'i lost my parents to fox news' how 2 Liberal elderly parents with fox news blaring in the background became groomed into views of hatred, she challenged their ideas she pushed them to engage with cnn et al to 'unpick the lefts views' so exposing them to the lies spread on fox. She tyrned off the tv whenever over, she signed them up for more Liberal emails to newspapers that they once read so increasing their myopic news sources to open their information sources up. By the time of their passing her parents were mostly back to being the people they were.

Yes James , I have a son who fits exactly into that category. I have had over five years of trying to rationalise with him , but now I just permanently remain silent when he starts his outlandish rant thereby hoping he will realise that my silence does not give consent to his opinions.
I have come to the conclusion that " some people see things with their ears and hear things with their eyes " If they could be labelled as some kind of electrical gadget I would say they have been wired up incorrectly. Perhaps that might be akin to accepting that Franz Mesmer was on the right track. What if we come to the conclusion that our use of too many electrical currents are driving some people mad.

I recall some twenty years ago falling down the rabbit hole of 9/11 conspiracy theories. It was almost hypnotic or like and illness. I came out of it when my partner confronted me. I was becoming angry, and convinced I was right. Since then, I have engaged with learning as much as I can about critical reasoning and questioning how we end up believing in unsubstantiated claims. My mental health in the early 2000's was not great, and I realise to what extent that impacted upon my ability to question what I was being fed through the internet. James O'Brien is one of those political commentators who employs critical reasoning incisively and his deconstruction of questionable arguments is always worth listening to.

Anyone who sees a problem in their life has about a thousand different things to point at that all share the common trait of being different now than the perceiver remembers them being years ago.

2:07:57 math may be a unique discipline in that it truly tests what you’ve learned in a way others just don’t. From my recollection, loads of what we’ve learned as children and young adolescents has to do with the memorization of facts for a test or what have you.
It’s easier to memorize facts for a prescribed period of time than it is to truly learn concepts, fundamental or otherwise.

@Prince William. We learn facts first. They are the basics - like scales in music. Then we have the tools we need for creative thinking. True, we forget quite a lot. But we can usually remember enough of the things that we need. Look at the wonderful things that we have achieved in the past. Civilisation for one thing. A lot of thinking went into that - because it doesn’t come naturally.
