Man are the controls and gameplay a nightmare for the SNES version. I had the PC version back in the day. Didn’t know it was on the obscure FM Towns and even a really good port. Too bad it never got ported to PC-Engine CD or Sega CD.
I feel like someone should do a homebrew port for the PC Engine CD and Sega CD, featuring the English dub from the computer versions and the gameplay style from the FM Towns and PC98.
Thanks for the video. No wonder i love PoP on SNES, but found the second game terrible. It always felt it was faster than it was meant to be, and very poorly made. (and after playing the first game on SNES, that's one of the best versions IMO, it felt even worse). Very good to know it was not me, but the port itself that sucked. and the scrooling is annoying, specially on later levels, something i didn't even cared about in the NES version of the first game.
@@filevans Genesis one doesn't have music while the SNES has many OST compared to Genesis and it has much tighter control overall. For me it's the best version of PoP1

It's Japan made and there's other ports which more faithful like PC98 and Turbografx which stays true to the original while adding the new Final Boss. So there's no reason to play that one. But for me and most people I'll go with SNES PoP 1 it's a enhanced experience with much faster and tighter gameplay and great music that undeniable.
I really like the visuals of the first game on the Mac version but it has some slowdown and just doesn’t have the smooth gameplay. The second game was done right.
The thing about FM Towns is they removed the quarter tone notes from the music, those notes are essential for authentic Persian music (which this game, unlike other PoP games, actually had) it made up by improving the quality, but if you ask, the Macintosh has actual Persian traditional instruments/music but the quality is so poor.
@@armorgeddon I'm personally too accustom to Soundblaster, to want to switch to MIDI. Especially when MIDI more often than not sounds a bit too off for my liking. But that's just me.
Very nice epilogue in PoP2. I was so excited I was able to read and understand all these phrases when I first played the game. That was quite good for a teen whose exposure to English was mostly limited among grammar textbooks.

The sound in the Macintosh version is worse than radio quality; it pauses every single time like it's buffering or something, and it feels like it's struggling to reproduce the audio, even in the cutscenes where there are no keystrokes for the CPU to process.
I had no idea there were this many versions of Prince of Persia 2! Let alone the fact that the two Japanese ones are a lot more faithful to the original than the crappy SNES version!

@@retrosutra you can always use the hack on prototype Genesis rom www.romhacking.net/hacks/4805/. If Prince of Persia 2 run on SNES emulator (look like frame skipping enabled) and not native hardware propably it's a compatibility issue

Do they play Pacman in high resolution?? Everything on Macintosh is ugly, especially the audio, sounds worse than radio quality. Not to mention how far the instruments are from capturing the authentic feel of Persian music, sounds more like 8-bit square wave. Worst than that is the gameplay, feels sluggish, poor color palette, unresponsive keystrokes, everything's wrong with this one.
IMO Macintosh version wins because of its high resolution graphics, and SNES leaves mixed feelings graphically speaking and I feel It so unplayable due to its high velocity compared to other versions.

Most likely, this is due to either the volume of graphics or the small volume of media (regular CD), or the unpopularity of Sega-CD since 1994

@@filevans there's also the Sega CD port which has animated custscene and that one was based upon the PC98 version which Mechner himself praise.

Mac version looks incredibly low quality trash.
The DOS-version can sound much better compared to this video since it also supports Roland MT-32 and General MIDI devices.

Mac version using cheap renderers, it's hurting eyes, DOS is great as it is, pixel art, and FM town is superior cause it's DOS with very good music
