Amazingly, the SMS version is the best one I think.

The SMS version is a really good port, but the original arcade version still holds up as the best one. Best graphics, best sound, best control, none of the tracks are cut for space and that epic feeling of playing on a big stage as you're running down the maze-like corridors of the Labyrinth of No End in hopes of reaching the final boss. The only thing people might not like about it is that it's considerably more challenging than the SMS port.

Even though I am a die hard SMS fan, I'll agree the arcade version is best here, especially the music by far. I think the best way to experience it is on the Wonder Boy collection for Switch, making use of those save states

CPC's version was just another bad import from Spectrum's one. Amstrad was far more better machine, but programers was so lazy to create from scratch some games .So they just take it from Spectrum and done. That was the suffering of Amstrad. Games like this, as first Wonderboy too, Lotus Esprit, Cabal and so many others, was just ported from Speccy.

Back then, it seemed like there was a big stigma against having an alcohol in your video games oh, so a lot of version had to censor the alcohol... And instead of doing that, the Master System version just changes the alcoholic beverages into other alcoholic beverages.
Also, I love how death takes for hits to beat in the arcade version, but he takes half as many hits to beat in the Master System version, and yet he takes twice as many hits to beat in the Amiga version.

I think I saw the arcade version once (only bootlegs surfaced in Europe), but really this is a Master System game to me, and one that's certainly in my top 5. It's pretty different from the arcade's feel ,and the western version is a lot less punishing (but still punishing) than the arcade or the japanese version in which bosses takes twice as many hits. I played the Atari ST version quite a bit, it wasn't that bad. The feeling I have now, seeing these ST ports is often that they were pretty terrible but really then I quite liked them. That is, until I had a Mega Drive at home.

  • @ryzmaker11

Such a shame that the PC Engine version has butchered sprite design (due to copyright issues) because it's otherwise a very faithful port. I'd have bought it since a long time had it kept the proper Wonder Boy design but as such? I don't really want it... But this version has a few other annoyances such as the fact that the main character doesn't knock at doors anymore before entering rooms which is a shame too because that little moment was priceless and integral part of the game's charm.
Sega did a solid job with the Master System port which stays faithful to the Wonder Boy universe. Just a shame that this version lacks a few tunes (because no, it doesn't have "different music", it's just the same soundtrack with some tunes swapped and some others simply missing) but other than that, this version looks and sounds good, has different in-game presentation and got an exclusive level which is always a cool plus. It's a Master System classic, worth owning in any cases.
As for the computer ports, that ST/Amiga title screen is quite hilarious. Wonder Toddler! :D But well, the ST version was my first contact with this game, circa 1989. I instantly loved the visuals and music and thought the game was fine as is but once I knew about the Master System port I didn't go back to the ST one and the Amiga and CPC ports are similarly mediocre but the ZX Spectrum port seems OK (given the hardware capabilities, that's it) and could the C64 port actually be good?
Overall the arcade version remains the best. Then I'd say Master System for the slightly different take and the exclusive level. Wonder Boy in Monster Land was trully a fantastic and unique game when it was first released in the arcade and I still would love a more perfect port than the existing ones (that could be developed for the Mega Drive and that Sega could make official just like they did recently with Darius? This would be awesome!).

It's because it's not really the Master System, rather the Mark III (the Japanese Master System) which had a completely different sound chip to all other territories. It was much cleaner than the MS's PSG sound chip but personally I hate it, sounds really tacky and lacks the charm of the proper Master System chip. Should also add that the weird Brazilian Tectoy reskin at the end of this video definitely wouldn't have had FM sound unless hardware mods were used or this is running through an emulator that replaces the original sound with FM.

They should have been ashamed doing such a lousy work on the amiga port. The Master System version tramples all over it (and while we're at it, it's the definition of a well optimized port). PC Engine/Turbografx is amazing too, but that was to be expected. When it came to arcade ports, home computers were cursed with subpar programmers. Original games for the home computers were often amazing, but ports were almost always third tier garbage that were put to shame by consoles a full generation behind.
