    Thank you for this video. I was a diabetes specialist nurse and I never really had much confidence to help support my type 1 patients who wished to try keto. I now work with a lovely colleague who has type 1 and is interested in keto and she is a big fan of your vids. 😁

      Melanie Benson do you now have a toolkit for those with Type 1 eating blood few carbs and trying to keep those ketones below 3mmol/l as it is a worrying effect - problem is dosing with insulin while not eating carbs is counterintuitive butvif you don’t then ketones rise it seems.
      Message me if you want to discuss without prejudice as I’m all ears.

      Are you a diabetes educator or an endo nurse?
      Because I wanted to do keto and still give insulin for carbless protein but the Endo nurse just gave me a confusing instruction paper on how to do it.
      It's is confusing, like you said, on the dosing instructions because BG is in range, when it's mealtime and you are hungry, and you eat carblesss food, then how to dose? because since you are type 1 and you don't make any insulin, then the BG is likely to go up anyways.
      And it gets too confusing to just wait until the BG gets out of range, just so that you give insulin for BG.

      I love noodles I am definitely not a diabetes nurse nor educator.
      I struggle with the paradigm of not needing carbs for energy (at least 85% of mind and body energy?) And so needing ketones and yet not wanting to many of them!
      I guess for people without type one diabetes it is easier but for me I kind of see it as similar to not wanting Much glucose in my blood but instead of having insolent to reduce it when I don’t want so many key tones in my blood I have limited tools at my disposal to reduce them - and that is my main concern given the dangers of key terms rising higher. People have said look up Bernstein and look up Jason Fung so I’m off to do that.

      Thanks for replies guys. I have moved away from diabetes now and working in geriatrics 😊 my colleague who has type 1 keeps her background insulin running (she has an insulin pump) so her ketones don't go mad and she becomes symptomatic. She has the freestyle libre too so can keep a close eye on her blood glucose and ketones.

    This happened to me while doing keto as a lifestyle but I happened to just come off a two day fast. The doctor said it was mild but implied it was keto because he found ketones in the blood! Lol but I was deficient in electrolytes from my two day fast. Also an infection can raise blood sugars also chronic stress. Two other causes I wanted to add.

It happened when I arrived in Utah, 7500 ft High. Could it be triggered by altitude? I had fever and vomit as well. Ended up for 2 days in hospital! Need to understand why!

      Yes….the problem is your body needs sugar and if your doing this diet you must buy a device to check your levels because if you deny your body with very low levels of insulin then you eventually get high levels of ketones which is bad. Cut down on the sugars and stuff but you need to have a proper diet in a sense that you need a little cus if you don’t then your body will start having withdrawal effects

      I also am in Utah, and waiting to be released from SLC hospital from my 2nd DKA event. I am also curious about that elevation question! I'm watching this video and more re DKA. Oh!! Just thought up a question for you, are you on any weight loss drugs?? Many of those are the same as the meds they give type II diabetic. They give them different names because 1 is for weight loss, the other for type 2's, even though basically they are the same thing. If you ARE on any meds, check to see if it's any version of SGLT-2 - because if it is you have a choice to make You can take a SGLT-2 OR do Keto, but NOT both! I posted a comment about my hospital visits, and that is how I learned to drop SGLT-2.

    Dear Dr Berg, I understand that it is critical to keep blood ph in a certain range and that if ph gets too low calcium will be pulled from the bones. If that is correct, is it dangerous to take k2 as it will send the calcium back to the bones and then the blood will be too acidic and give cancer more of a chance to grow? Kindly please explain how all this really works. Thank you so much for all you do to help us. Rosemarie

    Hi Dr. Berg, I have recently started this diet. I am also checking my Ketone levels. They consistently are larger than normal. I do not feel dizzy or other symptoms that you mentioned. I mostly eat MCT oil, meat , fish, egg, yogurt, cheese, olive oil, nuts, cucumbers , avocado and lettuce . I just mentioned these to tell you that i do not take any significant amount of Carb. Should i be worried about Keto acidosis. I also take multi minerals to compensate for the possible loss of potassium. I was wondering if this is not a good state to be and i need to increase my Carb intake. Should i test the ph of my blood. I would be glad to know more about this.

  • @howartthou

    I think its important to blood test both your ketones and blood sugar at least daily especially when prolonged fasting. In my case I can reach in excess of 5.0 mmol/l ketones while my blood sugar is around 4 mmol/l. Hope this does not confuse anyone because I am using the old units, the new units are mg/dl. A rule of thumb is to multiply by 18 so for a glucose reading of 4 mmol that is about 72 mg/dl, which is low blood glucose. So low blood glucose and high ketones are good, you are burning fat as fuel. But high blood glucose and high ketones at the same time are bad and it means you have ketoacidosis.

I commented about my TWO DKA events (one regular dka, one EuDKA). Just minutes ago was discharged from hospital. If your dr won't take into account your desire to do Keto and work WITH you, you might need a new dr. Any Dr who prescribes SGLT-2 for a patient on Keto need to get into trouble for MAL PRACTICE!! They are hurting you, not helping.

    Thanks. Dr Berg ! I have been on cycling in and out of keto diet for more than years . Last week, I got blood test and said that my fasting insulin was 1.8.( fasting 22 hours ) Is it from ketone body because of long fasting ? Or should I concern about ketoaidosis ? Yeah, this is _not_ what I'm experiencing.
    I'm experiencing:
    *extreme drowsiness*
    *weakness or lethargy*
    *brain fog*
    I think what is happening to me is a *_hypo_** glycemic* reaction. But I don't know why.
    I'm currently taking:
    *Potassium* - 99mg, twice a day
    *Magnesium* - 500mg, twice a day
    More *Salt*
    and (since 3 days ago) *Chromium picolinate* - 500mcg, twice a day
    I have a long-term chronic stress disorder so my stress response has been jerking my body around for over 55 years. I also have Cancer and must go thru the chemo/radiation thing asap. I originally started this diet to frustrate the Cancer, but I don't think I'm in the correct metabolic state for that to happen. My body is rekt.

      @stefanpanov1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you need like 3500-4700mg of potassium
      you maybe taking excessive amounts of magnesium, sometimes when i take 500mg of magnesium the next day i feel drowsiness weakness and a mild headache to mention i workout so i need even more electrolytes than you and still when i overdo it i feel some ill wanted side effects, your most important electrolyte is sodium if you keep that in check you don't have to worry about the rest as much but you should still watch out with excessive supplementation and focus more on real foods as your sources of electrolytes
      sodium is good you should have an intake of 4000mg and upwards

The only time my sugar is really down, is when I eat sugar or use my insulins!!

    Could you clarify? I’m a type 2 diabetic and I had been, as far as I was aware, reversing my diabetes by a ketogenic lifestyle; I went to celebrate my nieces 18th birthday and drank a little more alcohol than I normally would (I hardly drink); I woke the next morning and it took me FIVE attempts to stand up, falling back down four times and I seemed to have crazy balance problems, like vertigo; I didn’t realise it was ketoacidosis for a few days and when I went to my GP surgery the doctor examined me, and then called an ambulance; I was taken to hospital and they infused me with insulin and gave potassium after through a drip; I recovered after 2 or 3 days and went home on the 4th day, but the doctor at the hospital said I’d have to be permanently on insulin as my pancreas wasn’t producing ANY. Does this make me a type 1 now? I take 26 units of insulin twice a day but haven’t been advised as to whether I should take it before meals and I’m gutted that after all my hard work with ketogenic diet and fasting I’m back taking insulin;
    Can you advise me at all?

    As you know we can't avoid sugar in our foods completely, and I understand that the liver produces glucose when it breaks down food.
    What's an "acceptable amount of sugar "

      No, from what I understand, ketones only become dangerous if they get into the 10+ millimolar range, which is practically impossible unless you're diabetic or are fasting for a ridiculously long time.
      So as long as you have a functional pancreas and aren't literally starving, having too many ketones isn't something you need to worry about.

      And even 1 minute into this video Berg mentions a med that more regularly causes DKA for type II's (and we are NOT SUPPOSED to get DKA), but he didn't say what it was (probably because big pharma could try to punish him legally). @@jawfitness it’s a rare thing to happen. You’ll probably be fine on keto. Just being aware is the best thing. Ketoacidosis is different to ketosis. My main symptom of ketoacidosis was a stomach ache. I also had fast breathing and felt strange. A couple of weeks ago I was unwell and unintentionally fasted...I ended up in nutritional ketosis and lost 7lb in 5 days. I’d say watch as many of Dr Berg’s videos as you can to understand the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis, also to learn about how ketosis works.

Does a very slow approach to keto and introducing themselves into ketosis and gradually coming off the medication would be the way?

      If you miscalculating carbs or take too much insulin, - I guess it's one of those, if's/and's/but's situations that T1's always deal with, lol.
      If taking too much insulin on accident and then having to take sugar to make up for the insulin to prevent a low, if that only happens occasionally, then it probably shouldn't kick you out of ketosis right away, because the sugar that you made up for is going to match the insulin anyway. That is just my take on it.
      Definitely follow up with an endo and possibly check out Dr. Berstein as well.
      Edit: and then if you do get ketones, because of that particular situation, then just follow the T1D sick day protocol to avoid DKA.
      Not every ketosis leads to DKA though. A T1D in ketosis is like playing Russian roulette as in, for the T1, how much ketones can you get yourself into before it turns in *dangerous* ketones?
      It's an unknown life threatning gamble, just like Russian Roulette.

      I know it's 3 years later but if still useful, I think the issue with too much water is loosing electrolytes/ minerals (one is going to be low on sodium from not eating carbs and loosinf potassium also). So an electrolyte drink for example a 3/4 tea spoon of sea salt or hymalian salt in a 30 ounces cup of water. Dairy like milk is apparently good also.
      To prevent it : Leafy green vegetables are a rich source of electrolytes. Many foods and drinks contain electrolytes, including: Leafy green vegetables: Spinach, kale, and collard greens are good sources of calcium and magnesium. Other vegetables: Avocado, sweet potato, and squash are rich in potassium.

    Dr. Berg! Hi!! I just want to ask that is it possible to increase height after 22 or 23 . Some utubers insist that it is possible. Really???

      Increasing your height is not possible. It is determined by the growth plates in your body. You were born with the blueprint of your height.

      Thank you; genuinely I appreciate your concern. My GP has little understanding but I am reporting it to the Diabetes Nurse Soecialists and am nit too concerned because once I eat and inject the ketone levels come down again but .... there is a side effect in the likelihood of reducing my time in ketosis.

    Could going Keto help with Psoriasis?

    • @MizzPeech
      @MizzPeech 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheYankeei3 ... Psoriasis is an auto immune disease, so it would help. Google “Dr Berg auto immune” I’m sure he has a few videos on it.

    • @Acadian.FrenchFry
      @Acadian.FrenchFry 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it could since keto helps with inflammation/auto immune disorders. But I am only guessing.

    • @maxibake9323
      @maxibake9323 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fidelcatsro6948 I'll try & make this a small answer Fidel. I ate homemade soups for lunch in the Winter, but am now eating big salads with a good protein & fat source in it for lunch, at around 2pm, then another side salad at dinner, with more protein again, & a mixture off cruciferous vegetables, my main dinners quite big, but if I'm not too stuffed I will eat a fat source, in the form off an Avocado pud, or something homemade that's been baked, or full fat yogurt & berries or Keto icecream. If I've not had enough fat all day, then I have a fat bomb. All off this is changeable though & not set in stone. My hubby does Omad & Keto, so sometimes I don't have any lunch at all. I bake alot, so make keto breads, rolls, crackers & pizzas. Hope that made sense. There are so many TH-camrs with recipes, it's been fun learning new recipes. Maybe you could check out some nice Fish ones Fidel, as I know you are partial to fish. Lol. Take care. ❤🙂🐶

    Supposedly some people whom are NOT diabetic caused this. Which I think there is an underlying issue they are not aware about.
