    Thanks! I just liked and subscribed! I bought one last week on clearance at Home Depot, and it looks like I could go ahead and make cuttings from it now to grow a nice hedge. I’ve got a weeping willow that I love, but I’m really liking the look of these leaves and the fact that it’s just a shrub and not a huge tree. Thanks!!!

    I planted one of these about 12/13 years ago. It was a twig when I planted it and now it must be at least 15 feet tall and wide. Just the size and color of it makes it stand out on the property. Unless you plan to keep this willow short, I would not recommend planting it near any structures like your home or garage or shed. I planted mine at a good distance from any structure and all eyes seem to go right to it for its beauty.

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @motorcyclezeal4813 they all did fine for a while. Then a walnut tree began growing nearby. Walnuts have a chemical alleopathic property that prevents many types of plants from thriving. Unfortunately this and too much shade in the area eventually was too much for them.

    Hello. Thank you for the video. I’m a new homeowner with two dappled willows on my property. I am in zone 6b in NJ. I just hard pruned my willows today to about 2-3 feet tall. I was feeling a bit nervous but seeing how well yours had done, makes me feel a bit better.

    • @Growingthehomegarden

      They are tough plants and should do well. It's probably the best way to restore them if they've been let go for a while.

      @@Growingthehomegarden good to know. I have no idea how long it had been since their last prune. The tall wispy bits were reaching upwards of 10-12 feet easily. How often should the dappled willows be cut back like this? I also noticed that all the wispy branches already had small buds on them.

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@delia5588 Ideally you should prune a little every year to maintain form and shape. It could be done every couple years for a more natural look then just spot prune the odd branch or two when needed.

    Thanks for the info. I have a wet spot that even gets standing water after a few days of constant rain or a sudden snow melt. Because my backyard is lower than my front, and I have houses behind me ( with slightly higher lots which is the root of my drainage problem), a French drain is not an option. My local Cornell Extension recommended a rain garden, using these shrubs in the worst areas. That’s the project for this spring when things dry up enough. Based on your info, I’ll get a few of these pretty shrubs.

      Dappled willows would do great in a rain garden area. Also consider some viburnums like Arrowood viburnums (V. dentatum). It has beautiful flowers but also provides berries for the birds.

    • @karenbaker9255

      @@Growingthehomegarden I’m looking at viburnums, as well as red osier dogwood, Joe Pye weed, foxglove, purple coneflower, cardinal flowers, ostrich ferns, and some grasses. I’m really hoping this helps. If I ever meet the developer of my neighborhood, which was put in in the late 50’s/early 60’s, we’re gonna have some words. I’ve got two yards behind mine, that are higher and drain into mine. Why anyone would plan this area like that, is beyond me. I’d like to know who had the brain cell back then!

    Hi Dave, a new subscriber in PA! We enjoyed your video and it was interesting to see how well the dappled willow came back. My wife and I just purchased a tree version...about 5ft height or so...but still have to pick it up. We think it will look great in the front of our house making a nice color contrast between with the dark brick of the house. We'll try to keep it on the smaller/shorter side so it doesn't overpower the area where it's planted and maybe give it the lollipop look and then have room to put in some other contrasting plants on either side of it to really set-off the front of the house! Thanks for the video and all the great tips!!

    I’m stunned at the weird timeliness of finding your article and video about the variegated Japanese weeping willow .I’ve been wondering/worried about our dappled Japanese willow. It’s getting so tall now & I know it needs a pruning. But my husband will insist on doing it. He’ll research the topic beforehand but he has been bugging me to let him prune the tree instead of hiring someone to do it. How much would something like that run? We’re in the nausea inducing city of Indianapolis. Is it worth calling a tree expert and do I need a tree expert that comes from one of those yard maintenance companies that I don’t really trust? I could post around locally. If I found some guy with two good references, I’d jump on…..well, not him….but the chance to hire him if the price is right. Or should I give my husband the green light and cross all my fingers.
    I love your presentation, btw.Thanks for the video and I’ve subscribed so I’m sure I’ll be enjoying others .

      It's definitely a DIY capable project. Just get some good clean pruner/loppers and you can get it back into shape. Depending on the trunk size a chainsaw may be helpful. I've often just used a bowsaw when I didn't want to mess with the chainsaw. I couldn't tell you how much someone would charge for this as it varies a lot depending on the region.

If I were I would be trimming them here I would keep them about 5-6 feet tall and wide.

    Hello! Do you have any advice on transplanting a large dappled willow? Ours is about 2 years old and about 7 feet at the highest point, it has outgrown its space unfortunately

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two things on transplanting a big willow plant like this. Prune it back so it won't be as difficult to maneuver. As much as 2/3 of the plant could be cut back without too big of a risk. You can stick some of the cuttings in water to root as a backup just in case the original plant has difficulties. The second thing is to dig as large of a root ball as you can. The more root system you can leave in tack the better it's chances are. Also keep it wet throughout the process. A spray here and there while it is above ground will help reduce transplant shock.

    Hi Dave, We picked up our dappled willow and planted in on the 23rd. It looks good where we put it and are trying to keep it thoroughly watered. There are a few thin branches that are sticking up and look out of place. Do you think it's Ok to trim those branches at this point or should we wait until the fall? Thanks for any info you can provide:)

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be ok doing a little corrective pruning. Make sure you clean the pruners before you do so you don't transfer any diseases from other plants. Probably not a huge risk but never hurts to be careful.

      With willows I think you can prune at anytime to correct their form. Late winter is easiest since you aren't dealing with the leaves and big branches will be lighter.
