Hardy in 5a! Another addition to my nursery stock. I will find a friend and ask for a cane or two, give them a new plant in return next spring! Then it's off to the races🎉
It's nearly impossible to fail propagating any type of Willow. I took cuttings of a corkscrew willow from a friend's house, took them home leaned them against the house, two days later they had rooted.
That was a great and easy idea I was wondering if you can do that with Crape Myrtles and possibly other bushes too. I’m a landscaper on my job and would like to connect with you to get more ideas?
They need chill hours, but you can put them in a ziplock bag with a little sprinkle of water and store them in your crisper in your fridge til spring and they will root out and grow just fine. I stored all my dappled willow cuttings like that last winter.
This is my first time propagating both in water and soil about six weeks ago. They are doing well with new roots and sprouts. How long before they can go in the ground. I live in zone 4.
Thanks for the I fo...I wonder if thinner branches will root in a pot many so I don't waste those? Also..where are you located? I'm in NW Alabama..Berry Botanical Gardens and I plan to make a long hedge of these .
Long way til winter. Let them grow and get as big and heavily rooted as possible. Come winter, let them go dormant (freeze). If the plants are hardy in your zone, they don't need much care at all. But if I were you, I would cover them in plastic for most of the winter to give them the best chance of high success rates next Spring.
I recently bought a dappled willow on clearance. This is the first perennial I did not research prior to purchasing. I’ve been reading up on them trying to figure out where in my yard to plant it. I am getting mixed information about the roots being invasive. Do you have any information or resources to clarify? I’d like to plant it 10-15 ft away from my house. And I’d also love to form a hedge at the bottom of our property eventually. My concern is water lines, septic, sewage, etc. Do they have invasive/aggressive root systems?
@@savvydirtfarmer I planted mine in the ground late this year, I believe I didn't get it planted untill sometime early July. So I bet next year mine will get as tall as yours.

Found a branch on the floor of my big box store of the variegated one last week, Spahgnum moss and a drowning left them outside they’ve all rooted

Exactly why I offer them... nearly foolproof propagation success!

Would these root indoors over the winter or do they need the freeze to do so correctly? In chicago
Great question, I am in MN...
Hope we will get an answer because anything green indoors helps with the cabin fever of winter. ❄⛄🌬🌲

As RCCRAYZ says here... this is a good way.
Awesome thanks for the great advice.

Take is SLOW and EASY. Let those roots get big and thick before you try to transition them to anything different.
What season is planting the cuttings done in?
I stick cuttings late Spring through summer, then again in late winter. Depends on the plant and how much plant material I have.
What is the spacing of these to create a semi-privacy hedge/accent fence without overcrowding? Thank you
At 8’, they’ll grow together

We're in NW AL also; yes, the smaller ones will root also... just take a bit longer to grow out.
When do you dig them up? The ones from last year?
Any time in winter when the ground isn't frozen.
@@savvydirtfarmer perfect. and just put them in pots? trade gallon size or bigger? Thanks for responding. Greatly appreicate it!!!!!
@@user-dw7ee5gh3v mine will go in trade gallons
How do I keep my plants over winter that I just propagated abut six weeks ago? I am in zone 4

So will it grow as a bush or a tree?
Naturally will grow as bush, can be trained into tree form as well

Not sure. I had two of them planted right next to my house and never had any issues.
Thanks for your response!
I would like to get some cuttings. If there some still available, how would I put in a order?
watch the last 30 seconds of the video. thanks!
Do you do this in the spring or fall.
Dappled willows I do them in winter
Was all that growth on that dappled willow behind you from one season? Mine only got about 3/4 your size.
Yes... and this is with a terrible drought and heat this summer. I watered them, but they suffered and still put on 10-12' of growth.

I planted 4 willows last year but only two are growing now! I did not prune in the summer. What the heck do I do now????
I sent an email with my order but haven’t gotten request for payment via PayPal yet. Been over 24hrs. Did you sell out?
