Thanks for the flashback. I worked on the case design for that console back in the 90s. I didn’t have anything to do with the electronics but I did a little case redesign and some of the graphics. Did you know there was a blue version planned for the east coast and the dark gray was for the west coast and the power button was supposed to be a small round post. Atari’s Jaguar director made almost every mistake you could make while developing this console. It was like they wanted it to fail.
2007 I was working for Amazon in the UK. We had 2 factory sealed Jaguars and 2 factory sealed Lynx 2's delivered for an unknown reason. I bought them all for £20 each.
It's kinda funny, random stuff like this pops up at stores and warehouses occasionally. Some smaller game stores I shop at still receive *ps2* games new and sealed along with shipments of ps4/5 and xbox games...
Random Jaguars popping up with retailers was a thing for a while. Game in the late 90s had loads of them going for about £20 each and games for a few quid. Wish I'd bought a stack of them at the time.
Something funny about the notorious Jaguar CD system. I have owned about a dozen of em. Whenever one didnt work it was always the same problem. The spindle was pushed down and jammed and wouldnt spin. all it takes is a sharp knife and in a matter of seconds gently pry the spindle upwards slightly usually you see slight up movement and slight pop sound. you now have a perfectly working jaguar cd again. ive fixed several like this
Honestly dude, these videos are helping me out so much right now. I've really been wanting to fix some of my retro consoles, but I've been afraid of messing something up. Your guided videos are a huge help.
5:00 The first mistake of every Jaguar newbie, no game means no power! Same thing with the Lynx. These things are stupid but fun to work with. Back to watching.
In 2019 I did get a Lynx with two games which supposedly didn’t work. I was all prepared to replace the mosfet that often fails (Q11, IIRC) but it just… worked. Nothing was wrong with it. **shrug**
Man, I’m here from the start, and i supported you when you had like 80 subs. It’s crazy how you moved in Terms of collection and video quality. From the times I’ve still been following you enjoying the videos. It’s really nice how ur channel has grown since then. Told you you could do it :) Good job, and I’ll be waiting for more amazing content.
You never forget your early admirers ;) Even my wife remembers you. I was so excited to read your comments back then, I shared them with her too and I was like "hey, this guy thinks my videos are cool" :P Thanks for the support bud. It's very appreciated.
One of the coolest things I discovered with the jaguar was the cd addon allowed you to put in a music cd and watch about 30 or so color patterns on the TV that beat along with the music. Me and my buddies would smoke and watch for hours lol.
I just cleaned my Jaguar, and oh my God it started right up. Wow I thought it was dead. I am so glad you made this video. All did was clean the cartridge slot and got picture 🖼️ n the tv.
Great find! The former owner would be kicking themselves if they knew it was just a wrong power supply. Towers II is a decent game, but would be better with a keyboard and mouse. Surprised Tempest 2000 wasn’t included as that’s the signature game. Hope you enjoy it!
I think it was a good deal for him. Probably not tech savvy and doesn't care about the collectibility of the system. As far as he's concerned it's someone else's headache (mine haha) and he got ~$380 for it.
that was actually a pretty decent games collection you've got there, Towers2, Doom, AvP, all-in with the console and 2 controllers for $400, very very decent price.
@@breakingames7772 Most likely it’s because of the supply. Prices are always determined by supply and demand. Even if demand is relatively low as I believe it is with the Jaguar vs. Genesis, SNES, N64 and Saturn, because the supply of Jaguars on the market is lower than the others, the price is going to be higher. The Jaguar wasn’t in production for as long as those other consoles. It was only made from ‘93 to really the end of ‘95. By spring they were already liquidating all remaining Jaguar inventory and I doubt they made many new Jaguars if they made any at all in ‘96. I don’t know anyone who had one as a kid and some of my friends had a PC Engine (Turbo Grafx 16), 3DO, Sega CD, 32X, Neo Geo CD and one of them even had a CDi lol, but no one had a Jaguar. No one had a Neo Geo AES either, but that’s because none of us had parents willing to buy $200 games.
Lack of supply. The Jag sold 250k units worldwide and the average game probably 20k-30k copies. Those other systems sold millions of units with an equally high volume of software. Jaguar will never be cheap to collect for (still cheaper than Neo Geo lmao) just because there isn’t enough to go around.
man i got this when it came out.. i remember being pretty bummed about it at the time and i ended up just giving it to a friend as a gift (i even had the cd attachment). man i wish i had held onto it
@cockmcballs4577 yeah, when I got alien vs predator I ended up spending a ton of time with it and I remember loving that game. it was only after finishing that game that I was like "there's nothing else I wanna play." I even got the cd expansion but the only thing interesting was the music video puzzle game..and it was only interesting to me at the time because I wasn't allowed to watch mtv so that game was kind of a loophole haha. but yeah I mean, I played the heck out of doom as well.. and tempest 2000.. but it was more out of a feeling of obligation than excitement.
Wow. You got super lucky. It even came with the wrong power supply and it wasn't fried! If they had powered it up with a game installed, it would have fried the power regulators and audio IC!
I was almost certain that there would have to be some swapping of parts. I even added the power regulators to my shopping cart in between takes before I realized I need to insert a cart to test the system!
@@kanesmith8271 Atari made a lot of mistakes when making the Jaguar. The power supply was their least egregious mistake. There were multiple hardware errors and design problems with the console.
I thought if you tried a centre negative when it requires a centre positive then nothing would happen? Luckily for me that, the voltage and amps is sth I know to check for at least
@@deadsi Reverse voltage is really bad for most devices. It doesn't matter if it's meant for one way or the other, there is a good chance you will damage your device if you send it the wrong polarity of electricity. A well designed device includes protection against it, but to save costs, the extra parts required to add protection can be left out when designing the product. The Atari Jaguar is one of those devices without the required circuitry to protect from the wrong polarity of power.
This new format your using of filming with you more in the shot is way better than your old style! Not saying the old way was bad, just this is a step up. I watch the show mymatevince quite a bit and I wish he did the same. Its much for personal in my opinion!
Always enjoying these restoration and repair of old consoles. It's a skill I don't have, but respect the knowledge and care professionals put into restoration.
Thanks for this, really enjoy your patient approach. This reminds me of a random box of consoles and games I bought a couple years back. Amongst the stuff were two n64's, neither one would display anything, one wouldn't power on, and a bunch of the controller ports wouldn't work. All I had to do was clean contacts with isoprop and everything worked like new. Literally got more than my initial investment back after selling them, and absorbed a bunch of great stuff to my collection.
Nice video. One note, I would never use contact cleaner on an edge connector, especially ones like on the Jaguar which are almost impossible to find replacements and are difficult to replace if you do find a replacement.
I'm confused by this concern, can you explain your reasoning? There are a couple of varieties of contact cleaners out there and the one I'm using (MG Chemicals 404B) is specifically designed for this job. I made sure that the silicone left behind by 404B is safe for plastics too. Are you referring to contact cleaners in general (like automotive ones) or are you specifically concerned about the product I'm using?
That is really good info to know about the center negative power supplies, I have a number of older systems in storage I used growing up but might have to get new power supplies and other stuff to get them working again and never thought to consider anything beyond the voltage, will defiantly be checking to make sure getting the right center positive or negative power supply when refurbishing them.
Prices for retro consoles are off the roof currently. I was lucky that I scored a boxed Atari Lynx 2 in early 2020 for a decent price. Congrats on your Jaguar package👍😊
Old computers, too. Back in 2005 or so I sold all of my Amiga hardware (5 Amiga 1200's, 3 Amiga 4000's, 4 PowerPC cards, 3 060 Accelerators..). The PPC cards for my Amiga 1200's sold for about €270 each. The only one on Ebay now is at €3,500. An Amiga 1200 itself was selling for around €40 on Ebay now the average is €600-€700. If I had kept it all for 15 years, I'd be looking at €30-40k easily. I suppose the lesson is, never sell anything. Store it in a box somewhere.
Just getting Flashback in pretty much the best console version available, on top of Aliens vs Predator is a pretty good deal as well. Couple that with Doom, and you pretty much have all the only decent games the system ever had. If you enter "clip" at the password screen, it should take you to the last stage of Flashback. Not that I recommend playing it from there, but it's a password I've remembered for the last 20-odd years, is all. Congratulations on your find- you now own just about all the fun that system can muster. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
@@exidy-yt Well, now, in my defense, I did say "pretty much" all of the good games, but you're right- Tempest 2k was a good one, as well. Don't remember if it was cartridge or cdrom either, so that'll go a long ways towards it being worth picking up. I also remember there being a beat-em up that was pretty good, but can't remember the name. Definitely a handful of games worth having; just not much more.
@@AceTrainerX3 Okay, now that one I don't remember. But we're still at less than 10 games. I'm not trying to be a jerk about it- this system is just one of those niche platforms that's enjoying a revival for some reason. Well, not so much a "revival," I think it's rarity is coming through in the prices. Rare doesn't equate to GOOD, though- I've got some hens' teeth I can't give away.
Always fun to hear from folks that owned these niche systems. It was similar with my Neo Geo videos and hearing from people that grew up with one. Love that you remember some random password to get to the last level on Flashback. I have a similar experience with Carmageddon on the PC - "lapmylovepump" gave you god mode. Random memory but for some reason one that is firmly planted in my mind.
Man! This takes me back to my uni days mid in the mid 90's. My mate, who I shared a house with, had a Jaguar with AvP and couple of other games. I remember thinking a 64bit console was mind blowing. Great video you earned a new sub :)
I found a complete jaguar in retro video store for about $329. Got the flash cart from Retro HQ and plays wonderful. Add the right adapter, HD retrovision cables and a retrotink the built in RGB looks pretty good. Most of the games are crappy but very impressive for the time. Tempest 2000 is probably the best one.
Nice, pretty awesome price for a working system! How long ago did you get that deal? I'm going to be looking into a multicart option for the system to experience the library of games. Not a system that's very well emulated at all so I'm looking forward to discovering some hidden gems.
Wow. Nice video. I remembered getting the Jaguar when it first came out, also got the Jaguar CD later. Only 2 games I really enjoyed back then: Tempest 2000, AVP. Traded it for the Japanese PS1 when it first came out, which cost closed to $1000 USD when imported.
I got mine from a yardsale way back in the 2000s and it was only $15 for a working system and several CIB games that included Doom, Busby Fractured Fairy Tales, and Wolfenstein 3D. Now they're just like holy shit levels of valuable with people dropping $300+ on just the console itself and a gamepad without a second thought.
@@cryptidproductions3160 Ive been playing games thru an emulator and 90% of the games run great and I can use a better controller. If I bought a system id get the SD Cart. Just wish I could play the CD jag games.
Just discovered your channel! With all the choices back then, I latched on to Genesis and the Playstation when it came out to play! Pre-ordered Playstation 2 North America launch. Was super excited that day just as you are in the video! Drives my Wife mad lol. Subed 👍
Someone mentioned the rotary controller and I was confused whether he was referring to an official accessory I wasn't aware of. So this must be a pretty popular mod for the controller then.
I guess I'm glad I never got rid of mine :D It has the CD drive and both are complete with their original boxes and accessories. I never kept track of their values as retro systems (same for my Saturn and Colecovision). The one time I thought something had failed was when CD's started scraping in the drive. I found out that it was just the drive unit had become dislodged from its friction fit mounts on the motherboard. A little jiggle and all was well. A modest collection of cartridges (25 plus the memory cart) and seven CD titles (Baldies, Battlemorph, BrainDead 13 and Highlander, plus the pack-ins that came with the CD unit) round out that corner of my collection.
What a great score! I’ve been wanting a Jaguar for while now. I had one friend that got one when we were kids although I don’t remember much about it. I think he only had a couple games. The console has gotten so expensive though…
After the first few carts worked I was pretty sure it would work eventually. I think this system was in storage for many years given all the carts needed the treatment with contact cleaner.
I still remember when these systems were being liquidated at KB Toys for $50 with the game at $5. The CD attachment may have been $50 and the system $25 now that I think of it. If only we were smarter back then.
I don't think anyone expected retro games to blow up like they did. I still remember seeing NES carts at Goodwill for $1 or $2. Those days are long gone my friend.
@@BorderlineOCD they sure are. Also I think there’s some funny business with these million dollar auctions for crazy common games but finds like this are fun.
It's around September 1993. My family and I were living in a Holiday Inn Suites in Burbank, CA for a couple of months. Our home in Glendale wasn't finished being constructed yet. I get the EGM and GamePro Magazine showing the Atari Jaguar. Was only $250. Told my parents I wanted that for Christmas. So Christmas rolls around and I kinda forgot all about it. I'm going to turn 13, so it's not something I'm always thinking about. I did get a Game Gear for my birthday 3 weeks earlier. So I open my present and there it was. An Atari Jaguar. I didn't think they could get it because it was in NY and SF. But they had some at Toys R Us but in limited supply. And it was over $300. Til this day, the Jaguar along with my Air Jordan VII Bordeaux I got the year before are still my favorite Christmas presents. This is why the Jaguar still means a lot to me even though it's without a doubt the worst console I've ever owned. I actually still had it for 23 years until I left some things in the Philippines 🇵🇭 in 2016. If you ever seen 8-Bit Christmas (2021), it's not really about getting the NES. It's your moments spending time with your family and friends. It was never about the Jaguar. They're just things. It was the thought and effort I put my parents through to get it is why the Jag meant a lot to me. That, and it has a really cool name, cool red and black font, cool boot-up, and cool design even if it lacks a cartridge slot cover and how the back is exposed. Thank you, Mom and Dad, for getting me that Atari Jaguar for Christmas of 1993 . Will always remain grateful for those Christmas presents in 1992 and 1993. Now I just use RetroArch on my Android smartphones to play Jaguar games like Rayman.
Thanks for sharing. Nostalgia is powerful, and a big draw for me when it comes to this hobby. I can relate to your fond memories and sounds like your parents wanted to put a big smile on your face. Two consoles a few months apart, haha wow you were a lucky kid my man.
I just want to comment on the Sony TV. I still have a very similar model (46EX501) and its still going great after 12 years. Love how it has HDMI, Component and Composite inputs. Sure it doesn't get anywhere near black like my Sony A80J OLED, but it was my first 1080p HDTV and I hope it never burns out a CCFL bulb.
My curiosity was stronger when i recently purchased 2 panasonic's gamecube q... not much to do on both but pretty sure that was also a great deal ! Nicely donc btw ! Cheers from France
I'm pretty sure the Jaguar doesn't power up without a game in it. That's why the LED wasn't turning on at the start. It's a really dumb design on Atari's part. So many people think their system is broken when they either don't have a cartridge to test it with or the cartridge slot is just dirty.
@@andycraig7734 Hah, just reminded me as a kid I picked up an aerosol can of contact lens cleaner spray (sat on a trash bag) and squirted my mum in the face? She was not impressed and dragged me off to the chemist to enquire about it. I think I knew it was mostly water beforehand...
Wow, you were quite lucky with this, for just some minor fixes/cleaning! For what I know a wrong power supply means insta-death of the console (the voltage regulators), as there's no protection for that. All you need now is an RGB cable (instead of composite) and the GameDrive cartridge! 😁
It's possible it was tested by the previous owner without a cartridge inserted either, which may have saved it. Just my guess. There's no protection diode in between the input and switching voltage regulator so I'm not sure how long it can handle the wrong voltage, if any length of time at all. It would have been a relatively easy job to swap out the regulator but thankfully doesn't need to be done.
Had one of these growing up, my Dad found it in a barn with at least 12 games. I enjoyed having it though I didn't play it a super lot because magic smoke came billowing out the top.
Typing whilst watching talking to the video ‘you need to plug a game in before powering up’ otherwise it won’t light up, glad you figured it out quickly. I own two Jags, one boxed , a working boxed Jag CD and almost all gams, all boxed, 95% are new/mint. Great little system, far more capable than most of the games suggest, killed off too soon as so many games were in development. Of course, it also couldn’t compete with the PlayStation 1.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing when I remember back when I was a kid and seeing Jaguar's selling for £15 and the games were all £5 each when it failed and the game store wanted rid of them 🤦♂️
Why are these stupid systems going for lots of money and the corner game store sells first release NES or the first Sega for 50 dollars and cheaper...I was just at the store amazed that a original sega with the 1980s box was 50 bucks. Hell the store even has original pong and another system from the mid 70s for under 100 bucks, a first release Atari 2600 for 70 bucks
@@BorderlineOCD I think he means $50 is cheap. Here in the UK you can get a boxed Mega Drive for about £50 though I think, but I would still consider that expensive.
Always love/hate getting console lots like this. Love that I still got a good deal, hate that the fun of repair got taken away due to a simple issue/simple fix. Regardless, congrats on the find!
I'm not ashamed to admit that I had envy you in this video haha! Nice find in this Jaguar, I'm trying to get one to myself, but it's very hard to find one with a good price and in good shape. Congrats for getting this one!
Just wanted to say that your editing skills are no less impressing than soldering ones. Really having fun watching your vids even though I don't have a clue what you're doing half of the time, lol. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations again, the Jaguar is a fascinating piece of history and a must for any collection. I have been keeping my eyes open for a CD unit for awhile now, but accept I will have to pay too much for it, so am just going to let fate decide on that one. Towers ii is marketed as the "only RPG" for the system, so I would like to play it. But from what I read, it's not going to be a great experience. I would also like to have Tempest 2000 for it.
I've put an hour or so into Towers 2 so far and its alright. Will give it some more time. Might not be a popular opinion but I'm loving pitfall. Maybe that's just partly nostalgia.
Still have my two launch Jags thankfully, and still chugging along. Have a pretty complete library and some of the best home brews. Some nice gems. It just keeps appreciating and the homebrew community is crazy active. Totally open platform. The Atari power supply says Atari Jaguar on it and it's much larger.
In the early 2000s you could obtain a brand-new (as in never opened) Jaguar in the original packaging (yes, with Cybermorph) online for *thirty dollars* plus shipping. For an extra 15 dollars, they threw in a spare core console. In the mid-2000s I was able to obtain a barely-used Jaguar CD on ebay, complete with packaging and pack-in titles, along with Myst, Baldies, HoverStrike, Dragon's Lair and Space Ace and the whole thing was under 300. I was able to buy Doom, Wolfenstein, Alien Vs. Predator, Iron Soldier, I-War, HoverStrike and a few others all in their original shrink-wrap as well very reasonably during this same time. In addition, a flea market local to me sold used Jag titles for dirt-cheap. It seemed like destiny itself wanted me to have a weirdly massive Jaguar collection. EDIT: Guess I should have a point. It's crazy how the demand for Jaguar hardware and games continues to this day and continues to drive prices up and up, and it's equally crazy how the underground following for this failed console (not to mention the Lynx as well) only seems to grow stronger. Guess I was lucky to be drawn in early, but it's wild how the hunger for this stuff continues.
Enjoyed my jag when it came out, but I had a 3DO at the time too and it had a better game library. Tempest 2000, AvP, and Iron Soldier were the only standouts, As it died and faded into console hell I bought all the games for nothing on E-Bay or in stores, I have several still in shrinkwrap I picked up for $1 each way back when. Picked a couple of the CD units up too. Have not to had any of it out in years, glad to see it was a worthwhile investment. I used to collect all the old systems and have almost everything ever made up till this last generation. Have not kept up on prices so this is nice to see, I must admit I never thought they would be where they would sell for $400 broken. I still don't understand the HATE everybody has for the control, it's not a good one, but it's far from as bad as everybody makes it out to be. The real problems were the games and the lack of good ones. The Pack in was sad.
I've had a chance to game on it properly over the past couple of weeks and when I'm immersed in a game I'm not thinking about the controller, it plays and feels fine. The number pad is just such a strange idea that doubles the size of it and clearly wasn't utilized and implemented very well at all.
@@BorderlineOCD I grew up with a 2600 so was a Huge atari fan. But They struck gold to start and had no idea how to keep that momentum. I think the Jag was desperation (most of the stuff they made that period was). The Hardware was not that bad (not that good either) and I think they were in the "everything and the kitchen sink" mode to attract people. Controler buttons were slowly growing, one button, to two. Intellivision and Celeco. 5200 all had keypads, then 3 buttons, then 6, add shoulder buttons in.. I think the idea was sound, more buttons to control more sophisticated games. But that was the generation of putting games on every console, most had 3-6 buttons and maybe shoulder pads then, If you made a game that required 8 buttons, no porting to other consoles. The problem was like so many video game companies have. Good idea but no real implementation for games. The NES and Robby Robot, the millions of addons for previous consoles. Not necessarily bad, but if there is no reason for it ( no games) it gets ragged on. The jag failed hard, crap games (mostly) over-ambition from Atari ( cd, vr). So when it's reviewed everybody picks the most noticeable hardware "blemish" a controller that is not like the others. There is no doubt it's not that great, but it works just fine and is not really uncomfortable, it's just big for no reason when the keypad isn't used. Iron Soldier and AvP use it quite well. maybe I just have soft spot for it still. AvP was a laggy but impressive game back then as was Iron Soldier. But as we have seen even a console with great games even fail ( Dreamcast) let alone one with very few good games.
Man oh man, that seller must be kicking his own ass so hard he's spinning cartwheels! Overlooking such a simple thing as the polarity of the power supply he used.....dang. He gave away a rare console at a 'non working' price that was working just fine had he cleaned his cartridge port and checked out more then just the voltage of the 3rd party PSU as well as a rare valuable cartridge! That was surely a gamble that paid off huge. Grats!
Definitely someone who didn't know what they were doing. Sucks to be that guy, I don't even mean that sarcastically, I'd be really disappointed and upset if this was me. But good for this guy! lol
It's true it was an oversight but if the previous owner wasn't tech savvy then there's not much they would know how to diagnose, even the seemingly simple stuff to you and me. It's just how it goes!
Awesome score man. You have to love when you get a "broken" system to fix. I helps to offset those repairs, like the major trace repair, you had a few weeks ago. Great job man!
True, you never really know exactly what you're gonna get with a parts/not working listing. I know you repair fiends enjoy the difficult repairs, as do I, but it's the luck of the draw.
Dude this is great, listen to this. So I got a Jaguar yesterday and I heard you can use the Sega Genesis power cable on it. Tried it and the light didn't light up. This Jaguar was in storage, so there was a chance it didn't' work. In the back of my mind I was like "maybe it needs a game to be in there" then I thought, eh idk about that, I've never seen a console need a game in it just to get power. So I look up this video, and then poof, that's exactly what it was. I saw you say that, and was like "ha, wow" - So now my new Jaguar works, and I was playing Cybermorph all night!
I will never forget going in KB Toy store & seeing the Jaguar for $20. I actually had $20 too but I knew I wouldn’t get another $20 for a long time so I didn’t get it. I actually still think about it from time to time. That was so long ago. Had to be over $25 years ago.
Man I had flashbacks to when I picked up my Jaguar from a garage sale years ago then boxed it up and forgot that the cartridge had to be inside for the system to power on. I was getting frustrated when I pulled it out of storage and couldn't get the power light to confirm it was still working until I remembered it had to haver a cartridge in it to power on LOL.
Great buy in the end. I bought 2 ps3's for £20 2 nights ago. Slim 320gb which doesnt have anything wrong with it but looks a bit dirty so will take it apart and clean and new thermal paste. The other an original 60gb backwards compatible 1. Never opened before but has the dreaded YLOD. I watched your video on that again and will be attempting to fix it near future after watching few other videos. Keep up the great work. Watching your videos got me into fully taking consoles apart. Would only go to the disc drive before if it was playing up
@@BorderlineOCD couldn't believe it when I saw them on facebook marketplace. They didn't even say what model's they where. I was able to pick up though it was the 60gb as the chrome stood out in the pictures compared to the silver of the newer fat ps3's. Keep up rhe good work woth your videos. Always look forward to a new 1 from you.
I believe you can bypass the "feature" requiring a cartridge being inserted before the unit will power on by soldering a jumper between pins 35 and 36 of the cartridge slot.
They are rare, but sometimes you can find a super deal on eBay! Once I bought a parts only lot of consoles for super cheap because there wasn't a lot of info and it was a bit of a gamble. It was a NES, SNES, N64, PS2, PS3 and original Xbox. When I got them, I started testing them, and not only did every one of the consoles work, but the PS3 was a backwards compatible model, and the Xbox had been modded and had hundreds of games loaded on it. It was insane. Only thing I could figure is, it was some parent who cleaned out their attic and didn't want to take the time to test them. I still have several of those consoles. They were all in excellent condition!
That's an awesome haul. When you get lots like that theres a high chance it was a single owner. I've also noticed sports games are usually bundled by resellers because they are cheap. A single owner is more likely to bundle a valuable collection with their console if they are getting rid of it. You only need to luck out once, and from the looks of it you already have.
I remember seeing these on clearence at a Toy R Us for like $50. Should have purchased a few and held onto them. Of course same can be said about every console ever made I guess.
Just got mine from eBay with wires working console a traveling kit plus cybermorph and a controller user guide for system plus cybermorph manual 350$ can't wait to play avp on this
First thing that people get wrong about the Jaguar is that it won't switch on until there's a cart inserted. Sellers make the same mistake - I got mine for a bargain because the seller thought it was broken. It wasn't. The good news for Jaguar owners, is that there's lots of cool new accessories for the Jaguar available these days. If you live in PAL-land and have a TV with Scart sockets, you can use a Jaguar cart cable and get a beautiful picture. If Scart isn't available to you, there are composite and S-Video cables out there, or, you can find adapters from shops like Stone Age Gamer in the US, which allow you to use component video cables developed for either the Snes or the Genesis. That makes them a lot easier to hook up to a modern flat-panel display, though you may need a component to HDMO adapter if your flat panel TV has no component inputs. Atari Age have also released perfect replicas of the very-hard-to-find 6-button Pro Controllers. Apart from missing the Atari badge, they're identical to the originals. Not easy to get them shipped to the UK though (thanks to the stupidity of Brexit). Lastly, there is now the Jaguar equivalent of an Everdrive available. Sadly, it doesn't come in one of the Jaguar's distinctive curved cartridges, but when you can load the complete library of both cartridge, it hardly matters - and it means the games that were CD only are finally available to all Jaguar owners. Though sadly, without the CD-ROM attachment, you can't replicate the Jaguar's space-toilet look. Ah well. Though, if you do have a CD-ROM, you can now get an all-in-one power adapter that only requires one mains socket from en.retrogamesupply.com. All regions and plug types are supported.
Tempest was the game I always wanted to play upon the Jaguar. Wished I'd brought that console back in the day, and was the closest I came to buying a console. Grew up ZX81>Oric 48k>Atari ST>PC's from there and combo or Raspberry's, microcontrollers and PC's today. Was the whole emulating the N64 upon a 300mhx Pentium with Voodoo 3DFX and seeing how well that ran which was a turning point. But darn, always loads of gotcha's in tech that at the time you take for common sense and yet down the line, you can get people selling tech as broken when it is just a quirk that was common sense at the time.
Nice to see someone using those amazing Triad PSU, I have replaced all my PSU for Triad one they are way better than OEM one. As they support a whole range of voltage, you can easily run japanese console on North american plugs.
I find it funny that the AVGN's review had a friend of his go on about the Jaguar CD didn't work, even though most people now know the issue causing it to not work was ridiculously easy to fix (by prying the spindle with a knife)
Oh man thanks for sharing I bought one of these brand new when it came out and had the Aliens vs Predator game that played and that game made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up followed by body chills lol playing in the dark and alone

I like to collect gaming systems. And have found a few bargains. The BEST find was a toy shop that also sold consoles and games. And was also going out of business. Stopped in to take a look around. Place was pretty much cleared out of toys, games, and LEGOs. But had this tower of Atari Jaguar consoles nearly to the ceiling for an irresistible price of a whopping $5 USD. Sure I had my debit card on me. I could have scurried away with the lot. But just bought one. Went back the next day to do so but the shop was gone. Second best score on a console was a $15 USD SEGA Nomad from K-mart. Bought the last one on the shelf. Also scored a rechargeable battery pack, and an AA battery pack. $30 USD was what I spent on the lot.
The animated thumbnail to this video is phenomenal. There's absolutely no join, it's a flawlessly seamless loop of taking the same thing out of the box over and over. Was that achieved by skill, or some sort of one-in-a-billion luck?

Thanks for the flashback. I worked on the case design for that console back in the 90s. I didn’t have anything to do with the electronics but I did a little case redesign and some of the graphics. Did you know there was a blue version planned for the east coast and the dark gray was for the west coast and the power button was supposed to be a small round post. Atari’s Jaguar director made almost every mistake you could make while developing this console. It was like they wanted it to fail.
Tell us more.

some dental medical appliance company bought the molds and still make it, i saw it at a dentists office recently
Can you make a video about that?
Replaced by a 3d printer
2007 I was working for Amazon in the UK. We had 2 factory sealed Jaguars and 2 factory sealed Lynx 2's delivered for an unknown reason. I bought them all for £20 each.
😲
It's kinda funny, random stuff like this pops up at stores and warehouses occasionally. Some smaller game stores I shop at still receive *ps2* games new and sealed along with shipments of ps4/5 and xbox games...
@@12pandemon the retro gaming shop by me has factory sealed PS 1 games in mint condition I bought a few. I love finding factory sealed retro games.
Random Jaguars popping up with retailers was a thing for a while. Game in the late 90s had loads of them going for about £20 each and games for a few quid. Wish I'd bought a stack of them at the time.
@@craigcharlesworth1538 I thought that was supposed to be like 2008? I wasn't there but just remember reading something on the web.

Nice. I’m sure this happens with the N64 and it’s jumper pack too.
More knowledge thanks
Something funny about the notorious Jaguar CD system. I have owned about a dozen of em. Whenever one didnt work it was always the same problem. The spindle was pushed down and jammed and wouldnt spin. all it takes is a sharp knife and in a matter of seconds gently pry the spindle upwards slightly usually you see slight up movement and slight pop sound. you now have a perfectly working jaguar cd again. ive fixed several like this
Shame AVGN didn't know that when he probably trashed 3 of them., though he probably would have done it anyway tbh.
I'm gonna buy the next Jag CD I see then lol
Honestly dude, these videos are helping me out so much right now. I've really been wanting to fix some of my retro consoles, but I've been afraid of messing something up. Your guided videos are a huge help.

The first mistake of every Jaguar newbie, no game means no power! Same thing with the Lynx. These things are stupid but fun to work with. Back to watching.
Yes indeed. Now I know! Thanks for pointing out that its the same with the Lynx. Good to know for a future pickup/repair.
In 2019 I did get a Lynx with two games which supposedly didn’t work. I was all prepared to replace the mosfet that often fails (Q11, IIRC) but it just… worked. Nothing was wrong with it. **shrug**
Same with Wonderswan handheld.
Honestly I feel that this was a brilliant feature to protect the console, and the carts. Actually surprised more systems back then didn't do that.
I was so envious with Lynx owners I grew up in a poor household
Man, I’m here from the start, and i supported you when you had like 80 subs. It’s crazy how you moved in Terms of collection and video quality. From the times I’ve still been following you enjoying the videos. It’s really nice how ur channel has grown since then.
This takes me back to the Winamp days
Ps3 does similar for the entire music tracks you play. I have Spotify on mine.
I miss those old visualizers. Just aren’t a thing anymore.
I just cleaned my Jaguar, and oh my God it started right up. Wow I thought it was dead. I am so glad you made this video. All did was clean the cartridge slot and got picture 🖼️ n the tv.
Glad you got it working.
I've become really addicted to this channel, love the presentation. Keep them coming.
Thanks a lot man, appreciate the support.
Great find! The former owner would be kicking themselves if they knew it was just a wrong power supply. Towers II is a decent game, but would be better with a keyboard and mouse. Surprised Tempest 2000 wasn’t included as that’s the signature game. Hope you enjoy it!
Kind seems that thy were just dumping stuff from their storage and probably thought a couple hundred was a great deal for them.
I remember when you could buy these things for pennies on the dollar. Times have changed.
Why is the jaguar this much money but I can buy a retro used nes, Genesis, N64, Dreamcast for under 50 bucks
A genesis ( Mega drive ) here.......is only £25
@@breakingames7772 Most likely it’s because of the supply.
I love the stoic and dry reactions to everything in this video. My spirit animal in terms of energy felt lol. ALL BUSINESS NO BS.
man i got this when it came out.. i remember being pretty bummed about it at the time and i ended up just giving it to a friend as a gift (i even had the cd attachment). man i wish i had held onto it
@cockmcballs4577 yeah, when I got alien vs predator I ended up spending a ton of time with it and I remember loving that game. it was only after finishing that game that I was like "there's nothing else I wanna play." I even got the cd expansion but the only thing interesting was the music video puzzle game..and it was only interesting to me at the time because I wasn't allowed to watch mtv so that game was kind of a loophole haha. but yeah I mean, I played the heck out of doom as well.. and tempest 2000.. but it was more out of a feeling of obligation than excitement.
Why doesn’t the computer have some kind of fuse protection?
As someone who is bad at doing the problem finding on circuit boards, I thank you for showing me a bit on how to work my way around one
Glad you found it useful
That's literally what contact cleaner is for. It's not going to damage anything.
I liked the video simply for editing out unscrewing all four screws. Tank you for editing the video.
Ahhhh the feeling when you put the grease on the switch! no idea why but I've never thought of this. Wicked vid.
The Atari Jaguar and it's history are so fascinating to me, and it's cool to see how you got it working! Good job!
To me as well, particularly because it was their last hurrah in game consoles but ended up being a commercial failure.

Prices for retro consoles are off the roof currently. I was lucky that I scored a boxed Atari Lynx 2 in early 2020 for a decent price. Congrats on your Jaguar package👍😊
They are appreciating assets my friend and only going up in value. Always nice to score a boxed system, congrats to you as well!
Very interesting, and I learned something. I never knew about the center -/+ of power supplies... but I will be learning about them now. :)
Glad you learned something new!
I just got one yesterday close to St Louis, brand new for $400 plus tax.
What about Tempest2k? or was that only with the toilet-bowl CD-ROM addon? I don't remember any more, but THAT was a great game for the Jag.
Don't forget that the original Rayman was first released for the ol' Jaguar.
I remember getting one of these for $20 brand new back 12 years ago. Now look at the prices ! Damn
Retro games have taken on a life of their own.
Subed 👍
Welcome aboard!
I bought one on launch purely for tempest 2000. Picked up a custom rotary controller for it off ebay. Much nicer to play now.
Wow when tower 2 didn't work immediately I went 😬.
Well done on the purchase.
After the first few carts worked I was pretty sure it would work eventually. I think this system was in storage for many years given all the carts needed the treatment with contact cleaner.
I still remember when these systems were being liquidated at KB Toys for $50 with the game at $5. The CD attachment may have been $50 and the system
$25 now that I think of it.

Was stressing me out so bad watching you try to get the power led to turn on without a game in the system lol.
Was shouting at the tv, PUT A CART IN 🤣🤣🤣
Haha I know there must have been a bunch of you that felt that. You don't know what you don't know!
I was wondering if he was going to try to make an un needed repair.
"This is my excited face" I lost it, haha, these are great man.
My curiosity was stronger when i recently purchased 2 panasonic's gamecube q... not much to do on both but pretty sure that was also a great deal !
Nicely donc btw ! Cheers from France
Those are pretty collectible so nice find especially if they were working from the get-go.
I'm pretty sure the Jaguar doesn't power up without a game in it. That's why the LED wasn't turning on at the start. It's a really dumb design on Atari's part. So many people think their system is broken when they either don't have a cartridge to test it with or the cartridge slot is just dirty.
Good lesson to learn. Apparently the Lynx is the same.
Nice acquisition. It's good that you realized fast what happened with the console. Nice video
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it!
Ah, so that's the right way to use contact cleaner!! Been wondering the correct way to use this stuff, and amazing video! Keep it up!
Thanks bud, glad you enjoyed the video.
Yea, don't use contact cleaner for the lenses you put on your eyes, bro. 😜
Back in the day, my friend had Alien Vs. Predator on the Jaguar. That game is awesome. A technical achievement way ahead of it's time.
I've only played it a bit so far but its pretty decent.
Had one of these growing up, my Dad found it in a barn with at least 12 games. I enjoyed having it though I didn't play it a super lot because magic smoke came billowing out the top.
Makes me want to dig mine out of storage and show it some love.
You should :) Specially if you had some cool games to go alone with it.
A buddy of mine had an Atari Jaguar in college (circa 1996). We played the shit out of Alien vs Predator, this video takes me back. Thanks.
Boxed 1980s Sega for $50... are you referring to the Master System? Even a boxed Genesis is worth a lot more than $50. Where do you live?
@@BorderlineOCD I think he means $50 is cheap. Here in the UK you can get a boxed Mega Drive for about £50 though I think, but I would still consider that expensive.
Always love/hate getting console lots like this. Love that I still got a good deal, hate that the fun of repair got taken away due to a simple issue/simple fix.
Regardless, congrats on the find!
Thanks my man. It's fun not knowing what's going to show up but I know what you mean, I enjoy the technical repairs the most.
That's pretty awesome. Kudos! I considered buying a Jaguar new when they came out, but after reviewing the games couldn't get overly excited about it.
Thanks bud, glad you enjoyed it!
Great find. I never owned a Jaguar. I noticed that the Jaguar had no where near the amount of capacitors the sega genesis II has. Lol
It's true according to the recap kits the Jaguar has about 20 caps, almost half of the Genesis model 2.
Wow, nice work man. First time seeing your content. I really appreciate your youthful curiosity. Super entertaining!
That snowboard game looked great for an Atari. Im pretty blown away.
WHAT! Why is this console so valuable. Great video as always
I'm not ashamed to admit that I had envy you in this video haha! Nice find in this Jaguar, I'm trying to get one to myself, but it's very hard to find one with a good price and in good shape. Congrats for getting this one!

Much appreciated. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
I've always loved the case design of this guy.
@@BorderlineOCD I remember calling telegames harassing them on availability for that game. it was one of the last.
Didn't know the homebrew scene was active. Good to know!
What a steal!!!!! Working or not, those loose games are all worth good money. Nice!
I am quite impressed that the console survived shipping like that. I hope you bought a lotto ticket, you don't get that lucky every day.
Please, make more videos. I have enjoyed all of them.
Would only go to the disc drive before if it was playing up
Glad to hear you're tinkering with systems now and £20 is an amazing bargain for those PS3s no matter how you look at it!
So happy the console just needed some new love. 😃😄👍. Awesome video like always.
Glad you enjoyed it my man.
Glad to see some Jaguar fans share their perspective as well. I'm learning more and more about the system from some of you guys here in the comments.
I remember seeing stacks of Jaguars selling for 50 bucks back in the late 90's.
Dude. Your workspace is SICK. I have to subscribe.
First time here. I thoroughly enjoyed this whole video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching.
400 and all you had to do was have your own power supply epic
Not bad, I got mine for 38 bucks with 5 or 6 games... and I added a gamecube av port so I didn't have to track down a jaguar cable.
Really like your style of video and the editing thanks 👍
First video i have watched and it's refreshing to see such graceful work. My OCD runs wild watching others when they lack attention to detail and organization. I'm a perfectionist myself and work very much the same way. Subscribed
Thanks for the sub. I do enjoy being as disciplined as possible. Half the satisfaction is taming the urge to rush and cut corners. It's a way of life. I'm sure you would understand ;)
@@BorderlineOCD Exactly! It's a very rewarding feeling once completed a project. Knowing there isn't any cut corners lingering in the back of your mind cures that itch to rip it apart again and fix whatever wasn't done. Like you said it's a way of life for some of us 👍
I like to collect gaming systems.
Those thumbnails clips are auto-generated. If there is way to customize them, I have yet to figure that out.
just as a lil tip. you can clean contacts on catridges/ ram etc wih a pencil eraser
I would kill to have my Atari Jaguar back I had the cd drive addon for this too.
