Basal Ganglia: Neuroanatomy Video Lab - Brain Dissections

  • Structures involved in involuntary movements are shown on models, in animations, and on gross coronal and axial sections. Diagrams show the cortex-to-cortex loop and the nigrostriatal pathway. The direct and indirect pathways are shown. The direct pathway facilitates movement while the indirect pathway inhibits movement on the opposite side of the body. Clinical videos of two diseases, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s, are examples of interruption of the balance between excitation and inhibition in these pathways.
This is 22 of a series of 26 videos to be viewed in the suggested order or intermixed with other curricular materials. The entire series can be accessed here:

Dr. Stensaas integrates the identification of structures on the lab specimens with their functions and clinical applications in a beautiful way. It all makes so much sense the way she teaches it. You med students and doctors think you are so cool when you think you figured out the problem. Do you care if the patient suffering gets help? No. Let me tell you... we get no help after diagnosis. So, congratulations for being so smart. Enjoy the big money you get. You take every last dime from the 'case studies' you think are so 'interesting' to learn from. Most of these people end up bankrupt, homeless, and penniless because of this disease you find so 'interesting'. I hope my comment makes someone think. The so called "healthcare" we pay exhorbitant premiums for are a sham and do not serve us when we need it most. Shame.

Thankfully I’m in the UK, and we have healthcare which is publicly funded and accessible to all. We always look at patients holistically and see how we can help them (not just medically.). I hope this sort of thing will be implanted in other countries so both the rich and the poor have access to the same healthcare
