  • Diagrams, models and skull preparations are used to describe the vestibular apparatus. The semicircular canals, saccule and utricle are described as well as transduction by the hair cells in the ampullae and maculae. Gross material emphasizes the nerve, vestibular nuclei and connections through the MLF to the abducens and oculomotor nuclei in the brain stem for coordinating eye and head movements with body position. Nystagmus, INO, the vestibulocular reflex, and caloric testing are explained. Connections above the midbrain are not discussed.

I have a cochlear implant. Several head injuries that caused my Deafness. My whole life no one mentioned “vestibular” until 4 and a half years ago. First I was diagnosed with labrythinitis. A few years later I had an ENG test - it was determined I had abnormal eye movement nystagmus. Through physical therapy I was able to correct the vertigo. Days like these in New England with a storm coming, the barometric pressure sure screws with my sense of gravity. I am so glad I found this video. This is the first explanation since my diagnoses - Labrynthinitis, & vestibular disorder.” It took me years to get my ENT to talk to my Primary care Physician. At least 6 months of me asking for medical records of the ENG test where they determined the cochlear implant was working fine and that it was neurological. These past few weeks have been a challenge. This video - I get so much more information. Any time you want to ask me questions I’ll be happy to answer. :) thank you.
