    Great work, Gary! Love the increased frequency and variety of topics covered in your videos this year. I’ve been following you for 2 years and am still learning new things. You’re a wealth of information. I can’t wait to see your tips for veggie/flower yard sale ideas - my wife and I are fundraising for adoption and I think that would be a great way to raise a small amount of our funds. Many blessings on your growing season!

    Growing guides I've real always say not to fertilize herbs as they produce better quality harvests when they grow in poorer soil..but I feeding seedlings must help them develope faster..what do you think?!

    Just want to say thanks for all the info. My hubby is an electrician and set up 3, 3 tier shelving ($20 at HD) with the lights you recommended and all of my babies are doing great. I also decided to use the worm casting and tea and plants seem happy. I went to HD over the weekend and the veggie plants are $4.30-4.50 per plant! Yes, its a bit of a cost upfront but the $ saved over the years its a no brainer plus its a fun hobby to have!

    One of my personal favorite herbs that i love that I think does not get as much love as I think it should is savory. Wonderfully delicious yet familiarly strait forward to grow. One of the true tasting unsung hero on my taste palate.

    • @missmaam792
      @missmaam792 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And aren't there two types of Savory? Summer and Winter, which each have their own flavor profiles?

    • @ewellacres
      @ewellacres 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes the main one that is used by far is the summer savory. It has a more potent taste profile and therefore is more popular. The winter savor has a more mild taste and so is not as widely used.

    Thank you, Gary. Watching your videos is not just educational, its therapeutic.
    Let me ask you this: will adding a good amount of potting mix to a garden soil do much to improve it in any way? How about worm castings?
    The garden soil I've got is pretty well compacted and I'm surprised how roots can even break through.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think gardening is therapeutic. Potting mix would but I would use it just in the planting hole. Compost and peat moss are best all through the garden bed. Castings are great in the planting hole. Peat moss is good for compact soil.

    So after trying to start oregano and thyme, a couple weeks later nothing popped up yet. I re-potted a few 6 cells and sowed basil, oregano, thyme, and sage. I left covered and only 3 days later all but the sage had popped up. The basil popped up in less than 24 hours and was going strong. Oregano and thyme are so tiny and look so delicate. Like little hairs. I put them under the lights today so hopefully the sage will eventually pop, if not its ok I want the other 3 more. Hoping the oregano and thyme don't die. I have noticed that putting the seeded cells in a humidity dome really makes a difference for me. Everything comes up much faster and seems stronger.

    • @TGSureal
      @TGSureal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So 2 weeks later the oregano, thyme, basil, and sage have all sprouted. However the thyme and oregano sprouted but seemed to just stop growing. The basil grew up quick and then stopped as well and now is dying. The sage popped but only 2 plants out of a bunch of seeds in 3 cells. I feel like herbs are really finicky and difficult to seed start. This past week I went and got some parsley and peppermint. The parsley has sprouted but nothing in the peppermint yet.
      I have a bunch of peppers, tomatoes, marigolds, and onions all growing strong. But my herbs seem to be struggling. Not too sure what I'm doing wrong. I keep them watered but I don't think too much. Every few days I bottom water and let them mostly dry before watering again. Been using water soluble every 10-14 days.

    I've had a heck of a time battling fungus on my seed starts this year despite sterilizing my mix and using cinnamon. I gave to use my garage for seed starting and I think the cool wet weather here in coastal Va has been the culprit. Interestingly, I have had no issues (so far) with fungus on seed trays containing the same mix with added worm castings.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So casting are cool because there is science that it damages the exoskeletions of insects. They worm have to digest chitin.

    I do find herb plant spacing a bit confusing! On the pack it says to grow one or two oregano and thyme plants per square foot, but the pots offered at nurseries are look seeded..definitely more than one seed per pot! And yours look like they have a few plants per cell after dividing them up ..and you just plant them out that way right?! They don't get thinned to one seedling do they?!

  • @PokeyBessie

    Gary, is dill easy to grow from seed? Mostly because I want to grow it for the butterfly varieties that use it to feed on to grow /them/ Lol. Dill doesn't really stay long here in GA zone 8 due to the heat and humidity and bolts and goes to seed in less than a month. I am encoruaged basil is so easy to grow from seed since I Do use that.

    Thanks for everything, Gary! Gardening is VERY therapeutic. I'm an Army Vet that's been told by numerous people over the years that I should give it shot and I never have. I finally decided to give it a try and I simply LOVE IT!!! I've been following your techniques and I must say I've had much success with my seedlings so far. My wife and I built a raised garden bed (and filled it) but realized AFTERWARD that it doesn't get enough direct sunlight. It's ok though because we're now gonna do a container garden elsewhere and use the soil mixture from the raised bed (65% Black Kow, 20% Sphagnum Peat Moss & 15% sand....ish). Oh yea.....Is there a DISCOUNT CODE in the The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for purchases "under" $100? Again....THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, GARY!!! It's been hella fun so far!!!!

    I use a mixture of your peat & vermiculite with compost from my raised beds now for seedlings indoors. I find that fungus gnats aren't problem if I put that double sided yellow sticky stuff on a plant tag. They all seem to get stuck on them eventually. I cut out little 1 inch squares from the sheets. 20 sheets for like $9 if I recall from Amazon. Will last me forever.

    You can just leave some of them in the ground in the fall...they should return in the spring. I'm on the edge of zone 6 and 5 and my chives, parsley, and thyme come up on their own, sometimes before the snow is gone. It gets 10 -15 f below zero here at times. I just pile 6 inches of dead leaves over them
    I have them planted around my shed. The thyme and chives keep the rabbits from eating the parsley.

    Hi Gary been checking out your vlogs, bingeing this past weekend. I used to have a raised bed in my yard had to move haven't gardened for 8 years, I now live where I can do a container garden, researching potting mixes, so many complaints about gnats, any suggestions on what brand to buy, don't have plot of my own so I need to purchase my soil

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the binge. Not for outside. The gnats will come and go. You can make a nice potting mix yourself. 50% peat or coir and 50% earth for basic. You can reduce earth and compost. If have to buy it in a bag Miracle Gro is consistent and a product called Promix is very good. You can find that on amazon. Some are listed on my link below.

My tomatoes, chili and peppers got all my attention and now I dare to sow lettuces every other week, to get started for this season. Got half my tomatoes almost killed by neem oil, but the bugs are gone. Apple cider vinegar should keep them down now. Can you mention dosages in Liter and milliliters by any chance. Degree Celsius would help as well. Our zone in Central Europe is not considered to be safe to put plants out before mid of May for most of plants. Greetings again from 🇩🇪 Germany

    As always, terrific stuff. I transplanted my similar-sized herbs yesterday, teasing out one at a time, planted into toilet paper tube pots, and by this morning, they were over their shock and happily standing straight up. It's amazing how forgiving they are!

    I just found your channel and im so excited how much information is here!
    I wanted to clarify something you mentioned in this video to make sure im understanding correctly.
    Once we plant any one of these herbs you are specifically talking about, we could put them in the fridge for up to 7 days and then take them out?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Oh now I dont understand. Wait. Put the seeds in for 7 days and chill them that helps with germination.

    oregano, thyme, rosemary and lavendar are great for over wintering, so while I enjoy watching your video on these every year I am curious why. I guess this year it makes sense for you at the new house, but in general why should someone start some of these hardier herbs every year?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They dont always survive. If you have the established you dont need them. Older plants can also be woody but can be divided up.

    Again thanks Gary. just love your videos. Can you remind me why you over sow seeds?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All depends on how many plants you want and how much space you have to germinate. If you have a ton of space, you can just go to the biggest pot and seed normally. For me, I have limited space and learned several plants can be over seeded. So I start in dead of winter and sow them over-seeded in 6 cells, I divide them to 12. At 12 it is almost warm enough to transition outside. Sometimes I divide again to 24. So basically it is a way to do more with less space.

    Because we go from cold (now) to hot (likely in a few weeks) with very little warm weather (60-80°) can i start lettuces, kale, cilantro, and spinach indoors now? I waited to direct seed outside last yr and all bolted immediately. Thought if i started now perhaps i could avoid that this yr

    • @ashleighscott9896

      I live in the Carolina coast zone 8, we also go from winter to summer very quickly. I direct sow all the raddish letticue carrots and kale. Ive already got sprouts up.

    • @zeppypaige
      @zeppypaige 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m in coastal Carolina zone 8 as well and I find I have much more luck planting “cool weather crops” in the fall than the spring. It’s hard to wait but I think that’s what I’ll do this year as last year I had the same result with my lettuces. I did however just sew several different types of radish seeds. I don’t worry about these so much because they are such quick producers. I love radishes and can eat them just by themselves so I’m not so worried about having the rest of the salad to go along with them 😂
      I also want to try roasting them like Jess talks about over on Roots and Refuge. Happy growing!
