Inkscape's Equivalent Of The Blend Tool In Illustrator

  • This tutorial is for those of you who may be Illustrator users looking to transition over to Inkscape. Illustrator's Blend Tool allows you to make all kinds of creative drawings by duplicating copies of objects along a specified path. Inkscape doesn't have a blend tool, but it does come with a couple of extensions that, when used in tandem, will allow you to mimic the effects of the blend tool in Inkscape.
    The extensions we'll be going over in this tutorial are the Scatter extension and the Interpolate extension.

    Oh, this is GOLD! Thank you nick.
    There were ideas I gave up on because didn't know how "scatter" worked, what it actually did, or how to apply it.
    A thousand new projects just shot through my head!
    Who named it "scatter"? That's exactly what it's NOT doing.

    Hi Nick, thanks for your tutorial video, very clear and usefully. For the first design, Extension > generate Path > scatter I have to used -70.00 instead of -21.00 in order to get a nice design, maybe it's depended on the size of the object.

      Alex, the Scatter extension has been renamed. It is now found under Extensions > Generate from path > Distribute along path. The Space between copies setting discussed in the video now has a minimum set to -10.5 after which you cannot go without causing the error message appearing. Hope this helps.

    Hey Nick. Signed up to your masterclass course last week. Looks great BTW. Nick, is there a way of moving a blended shape. For instance I created a circle like in your video and did a blend of 2 colours. But as soon as it try to move that circle to somewhere else on canvas it reverts back to the solid first colour and the nodes for the blend are back where the circle was before I moved it. I've tried to group and combine but can't figure it out. I was hoping I could blend colours to different shapes and then arrange those shapes to suit my project.

    • @LogosByNick
      @LogosByNick  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kieran, sounds like a setting you have disabled in the Select Tool that pins gradients to the canvas so that they do not move when you move an object.
      To enable it, grab the Select Tool and look at the tool settings menu bar at the top of the screen. All the way to the right you will see 4 icons/boxes. The third box in from the left will read "move gradients along with the object" when you hover your cursor over it. Make sure that's enabled and try again.

    Hi, I have a problem with this. I type out a word, convert it to a path and then duplicate it. Then while selecting both words I open the "Interpolate" menu and tick live preview, only to get "At least two paths need to be selected" even thought 2 paths are selected. Does anyone know how to fix this? When trying to do this on individual letters (which are also paths) it does work however. Thanks.

    • @Sewing-Pattern-pixels.
      @Sewing-Pattern-pixels. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got the same problem, but you have to do the follow steps.
      1- convert the letters in a path, Path > Object to path.
      2- Object > Ungroup.
      3- Path > Union.
      and now you can duplicate the letters with the right click on the letters.
      4 - Put appart the letters.
      5- Select the two paths
      6- Select Extension > generate path > interpolate > select the number of copies you need and the square of Previews. That's it

      @@Sewing-Pattern-pixels. Thanks. So basically it only works on individual letters that then you grouped/put into union. It's weird.

    Instead of fixing their (probably) out of memory problem they just circumvent it with the text warning "fix".
