Ex Ford Australia service employee here. I remember the day the BA falcon barra came out and the first brand new one rolled through our shop. Took it for a drive and i knew we had something special here Then as the years went on they only proved further how good they really were.

Im old school but bought an fg turbo xr6, its really becoming my favourite car ive ever driven. Never thought they would beat the hemi 265 . Ill be keeping this Barra forever.
We had a great 6 in the 70s , Chrysler Australia built them. E49 charger made here was the fastest in the world from 0 to 100. Ford always built great cars in Australia. They were always developing their big 6. They really built a legend with this. Too bad Australia has traitors in government. They have destroyed this country. We need a Trump. We lost all our manufacturing because they took tariffs off everything.

Mate, I'm older now and wiser but still not over the fact that when living in Rockhampton I had the quickest beast in town . Chrysler 300 SRT (6.2) Tricked. One night a mate in his beat up Ford 6 turbo blew my doors off. I'd always beat him. I thought I'd blown the motor It seemed so sluggish, put it down to perfect weather conditions for his fucken turbo.
Pretty costly for a billet barra but damn, adding lightness with the sort of power they produce has changed the professional drag scene in AUS. I say professional cause these are the guys with the money to afford it.
Like you said, It's a big unit, and heavy but they're so robust and can take a beating. I've got a territory that was NA but I've built with turbo rods and tacked on a g40-1150 and plazmaman intercooler for the whoosh whoosh noises. She's not tuned to be a drag beast by any means, but she's pretty spicy on the street. Oh, I forgot, I also have a Skid Factory plenum to fit a larger Raceworks throttle body. Unfortunately with the power being delivered, I am noticing stress wear on some of the bushes, particularly diff bushes (which I've already changed to poly) as well as the good ole' bullet proof BTR transmission has some occasional slip.

South Africa had the barra as well. Pitty, we didn't get the Falcon or Falcon ute versions but only the Territory. In SA the Ghia Turbo version recieved the ST badge from Ford, so it's better known here as the Territory ST.

Great video, just some slight corrections though not all barras ran on gas (LPG) most of them ran on petrol however you could get dedicated gas engines that had the stronger turbo rods with thicker I-beams called 1R23, in late 2006 both gas and turbo engines got thicker 3r23 rods, additionally the pistons and rods are different between NA engines and turbo engines the turbos have a lower 8.8:1 and the gas pistons have a 10.3:1 and the N/A have 9.7:1. Also the wrist pin on the turbo engines are circlip retained not press fit like the N/A and gas engines With the intakes the early BA (2002-2005) And BF (2005-2008) had cast aluminium intakes, on the FG (2008-2014) they went to a plastic manifold for the N/A engines the turbo and LPG engines retained the cast aluminium intake from the B-series, however the FG turbo engines had a better flowing modified intake compared to the previous generation. Turbo differences between generations the BA-BF had a gt3582 and the FG got a GT3576.

BTW, if you look up a workshop here in Australia called Independent Motorsports, they specialise in Territory Turbo tuning and have ran one in the 8s.
If you're thinking of Barra swapping some of your other cars you might wanna consider importing some Green tops as they're known for durability, availability and cheap price. The green-top is fitted with thicker rods than the NA and early turbo Barras and they're the same rods as turbo Barras from BF onwards.
Green tops are good, but it should be noted that they have higher compression than the N/A motors and MUCH higher compression that the turbo motors. They're also not *quite* as good as a turbo motor (differing compression aside) in that the Turbo motors have a fully-floating gudgeon pin. Other than the high compression issue, They're a stout motor. However, one should only consider running dedicated E85 if the intended usage is to run a turbo.
@@rrpgarage all good, mate. "Green tops" for the uninitiated are the LPG motors (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), or propane as you Yanks would know it by. Fun fact, there were actually two derivatives of the LPG Barra engine. The early versions ran an old-school converter system, with a mixer ring inside the throttle body. The older-style LPG motors all had green cam/rocker covers. Then, later LPG engines were fitted with a gas injection (not gasoline - propane) system which significantly boosted power, but standard grey rocket cover. The non-green top LPG engines had even higher compression than regular ones (12.1:1) and are not suitable for turbocharging. So, whilst LPG motors are fine on E85 with boost, make sure it's specifically a green top LPG engine. 😉
Australia’s version of Drag Week is called Street Machine Drag Challenge. Of the 25 cars registered in the 6 cylinder category at the 2024 event; 18 of them were Barra’s. But 8 of those Barra’s broke down before the last day of the event. Thats a 44% failure rate. They are a popular choice in Australia because they are cheap to make power, not because they are reliable at making power. BTW, the N55 doesn’t deserve a mention and no such engine as the N58.
People always forget to add a good timeing chain set. Ive got a na barra in a ba wagon and ill admit i limmi bash it and treat it like shit but on new years day, I dropped a friend off, and it rattled its head off. Couldnt get up a small hill got it to our shop and the next day stripped it and found the top anti slap gude was missing, tensioner was backed off, crank gear was chunked, a guide was cracked and it jumped 2 teeth. Luckily, it didn't jump 3 Otherwise this motor would be dead. New t chain set and shes was back in action to get me to summernats😂
These things are mental...mine had a mild tune , upgraded turbo a few other choice upgrades and had 620hp. Be careful in 3rd gear when the boost comes on strong.....
That is what catches a lot of aussies out. Every time Americans mention the word Gas, Aussies immediately think of LPG. To Aussies, Gas means Gas. Petrol means Petrol. If you are sitting in heavy traffic and suddenly smell a rotten egg smell, there is a Gas car somewhere running rich. The unburnt gasses smell like rotten eggs. Gas is a 1/4 to 1/2 the price of Petrol so it has a massive incentive to go down that path. Fuel economy is roughly on par with each other if tuned properly. A lot of people used to buy the newer Barra engine cars that were written off at auction, take them home and strip everything down and put them into their old 60's and 70's classics, doing away with the old bulky, heavy all iron single cam 4.0 liter, 250ci predecessor engines. The old engines did have a special CrossFlow head that could be bought to upgrade their power considerably, but they were not in the same league as their Barra upgrade. Since Chrysler Valiant and their inline six 265ci (4.3 litre) Hemi engines took center stage over everyone elses V8's, Ford, Holden and Valiant refocued on what kind of power they could get out of a 6 cylinder. Valiant ended but Ford kept going and built the fearsome Barra.
the falcon 6cyl is the same motor from the 60's to 2016 with each generation getting improvements. you might look at a pre crossflow 250 and a barra and say theyre completely different but they still share the same crank journal and cylinder spacing. pre crossflow were upgrade to 2v with seperate intake manifold and 2bbl carn head was upgraded to crossflow design electronic ignition was added alloy head replaced cast iron tuned port efi was added single overhead cam was added vct was added double overhead cam 4 valve was added certainly not a full list but most of the major changes made entirely by ford australia.
@@rrpgarage yep they've always been a great motor. still plenty of people using the older motors too. there's more than a few crossflows with turbos in the 700hp range. a lot still used in speedway racing too.
@@6226superhurricane I cant be sure anymore, but there was a lot of changes in the block over the years to the point it is completely different with the Barra. From the multiple bolt holes for main bearings, the front timing chain case, changed bolt on positions for accessories, oil pick up and galleries are smaller in comparison to the older 250, oil seals went from rope to rubber seals, back of block also completely changed for newer transmissions and gearboxes. The casting is completely different, however they were always mindful to make some things similar like engine mount locations which made it easy to fit newer engines to older cars with minimal extra engineering involved.
there is some good footage on YT of a race boat with a turbo barra in it and nothing can get anywhere near it super charged v8's turbo v8's the barra leaves them for dead. if you de stroke the barra to about 3.6 liter they rev to the moon all hail the barra😬cheers from down under

I had a 2006 BF XR6T with the 6 speed auto, and even with a mild tune, I was making 400hp. It wasn't that hard or expensive to get 600hp plus as a reliable daily driver. I kept it at 400hp because that was ample power for a daily driver. I really regret selling it....
Bullshit, it’s because Ford USA didn’t want competition within its empire and your powerful auto union wasn’t having any of it! To protect all your workers and they would not allow it to be built in left hand drive for those markets and Ford Australia could only sell its products in New Zealand and some in South Africa and some other minor right hand drive markets, it’s funny how the facts get mangled around years later by people who who think they know and don’t and this is how the facts become very distorted!
@@rrpgarage Holden in particular were continually hamstrung by the heads at GM making poor decisions. Which was especially stupid when Holden was the smallest but most profitable arm of GM. One example was when some Holden engineers machined up a 3 valve head to go onto their 304 V8. It produced about 35 kW more than the 2 valve V8 it was based on and ran smoother and had zero issues during their own testing. All the hard work was done but GM decided against it. Fools.
**Edit** Nivlac does a ton on the 4200 that was available in the US. But more or less the same concept of build :) I got a feeling this is gonna be a good rabbit hole 😂 Im sure everyone is aware of Adam lz and his mustang, but Nivlac57 has some great high hp barra builds in the US as well👌 Plenty of info and parts stateside these days. Plus they are super efficient making 1xxx+ hp. Up the mighty barra 😁💪

Barra, was the code for the BA Falcon. Which was the launch of the twin cam engine as well, so people call the BA Falcon 6 cylinder "Barra " The FG Falcon was code named "Orion". Every new series has a development code name

@@rrpgarage I’ve almost got every single one. I got the 200/250 Crossflow, 3.9 OHC, a lot of 4.0L OHC and only a handful of 4.0L DOHC. I don’t have the INTEC VCT 4.0L OHC or the 3.2L OHC. Makes me lucky to live here and work on them every day. I even Carb swapped a 3.9. I got a video on my channel

The barra had another name from the engineering team that made it. They nicknamed it the gull because it was going to shit on everything and boy where they were right.

350k, 1 washer bottle pump, 2 sets of crap chinese wheel bearing, 2 kangaroos, serviced once a year. The fg xr6 mk11 is a tank and i will keep driving it because nothing in its class comes close
The twin cam engine is still based on the original long block Aussie made 250. [ The 250 block had increased bore spacing in around 71. Actually the same as a Holden 6. There is Holden engines with Falcon heads. The cross flow version is closer and then the single cam EA to AU engine. So many waffle crap about these tough engines. It boils down to throw enough boost at it . While ok as a n/a engine they are really nothing special. And hair dryers are for girls!!

The Au sedan was the last falcon to be sold here in South Africa, those ST territory's were awesome beasts.

@@rrpgarage all good, mate. "Green tops" for the uninitiated are the LPG motors (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), or propane as you Yanks would know it by.
Fun fact, there were actually two derivatives of the LPG Barra engine. The early versions ran an old-school converter system, with a mixer ring inside the throttle body.
The older-style LPG motors all had green cam/rocker covers. Then, later LPG engines were fitted with a gas injection (not gasoline - propane) system which significantly boosted power, but standard grey rocket cover.
The non-green top LPG engines had even higher compression than regular ones (12.1:1) and are not suitable for turbocharging. So, whilst LPG motors are fine on E85 with boost, make sure it's specifically a green top LPG engine. 😉

Australia’s version of Drag Week is called Street Machine Drag Challenge. Of the 25 cars registered in the 6 cylinder category at the 2024 event; 18 of them were Barra’s. But 8 of those Barra’s broke down before the last day of the event. Thats a 44% failure rate. They are a popular choice in Australia because they are cheap to make power, not because they are reliable at making power. BTW, the N55 doesn’t deserve a mention and no such engine as the N58.

People always forget to add a good timeing chain set. Ive got a na barra in a ba wagon and ill admit i limmi bash it and treat it like shit but on new years day, I dropped a friend off, and it rattled its head off. Couldnt get up a small hill got it to our shop and the next day stripped it and found the top anti slap gude was missing, tensioner was backed off, crank gear was chunked, a guide was cracked and it jumped 2 teeth. Luckily, it didn't jump 3 Otherwise this motor would be dead. New t chain set and shes was back in action to get me to summernats😂
Man, we would have been at Nats but I pulled the plug on the plans for this year. Next year we will for sure be there!

These things are mental...mine had a mild tune , upgraded turbo a few other choice upgrades and had 620hp. Be careful in 3rd gear when the boost comes on strong.....

That is what catches a lot of aussies out. Every time Americans mention the word Gas, Aussies immediately think of LPG.
To Aussies, Gas means Gas. Petrol means Petrol.
If you are sitting in heavy traffic and suddenly smell a rotten egg smell, there is a Gas car somewhere running rich. The unburnt gasses smell like rotten eggs.
Gas is a 1/4 to 1/2 the price of Petrol so it has a massive incentive to go down that path. Fuel economy is roughly on par with each other if tuned properly.
A lot of people used to buy the newer Barra engine cars that were written off at auction, take them home and strip everything down and put them into their old 60's and 70's classics, doing away with the old bulky, heavy all iron single cam 4.0 liter, 250ci predecessor engines.
The old engines did have a special CrossFlow head that could be bought to upgrade their power considerably, but they were not in the same league as their Barra upgrade.
Since Chrysler Valiant and their inline six 265ci (4.3 litre) Hemi engines took center stage over everyone elses V8's, Ford, Holden and Valiant refocued on what kind of power they could get out of a 6 cylinder.
Valiant ended but Ford kept going and built the fearsome Barra.
the falcon 6cyl is the same motor from the 60's to 2016 with each generation getting improvements. you might look at a pre crossflow 250 and a barra and say theyre completely different but they still share the same crank journal and cylinder spacing.
pre crossflow were upgrade to 2v with seperate intake manifold and 2bbl carn
head was upgraded to crossflow design
electronic ignition was added
alloy head replaced cast iron
tuned port efi was added
single overhead cam was added
vct was added
double overhead cam 4 valve was added
certainly not a full list but most of the major changes made entirely by ford australia.

@@6226superhurricane I cant be sure anymore, but there was a lot of changes in the block over the years to the point it is completely different with the Barra. From the multiple bolt holes for main bearings, the front timing chain case, changed bolt on positions for accessories, oil pick up and galleries are smaller in comparison to the older 250, oil seals went from rope to rubber seals, back of block also completely changed for newer transmissions and gearboxes.
The casting is completely different, however they were always mindful to make some things similar like engine mount locations which made it easy to fit newer engines to older cars with minimal extra engineering involved.
there is some good footage on YT of a race boat with a turbo barra in it and nothing can get anywhere near it super charged v8's turbo v8's the barra leaves them for dead. if you de stroke the barra to about 3.6 liter they rev to the moon all hail the barra😬cheers from down under

I had a 2006 BF XR6T with the 6 speed auto, and even with a mild tune, I was making 400hp. It wasn't that hard or expensive to get 600hp plus as a reliable daily driver. I kept it at 400hp because that was ample power for a daily driver. I really regret selling it....

To protect all your workers and they would not allow it to be built in left hand drive for those markets and Ford Australia could only sell its products in New Zealand and some in South Africa and some other minor right hand drive markets, it’s funny how the facts get mangled around years later by people who who think they know and don’t and this is how the facts become very distorted!

@@rrpgarage Holden in particular were continually hamstrung by the heads at GM making poor decisions.
Which was especially stupid when Holden was the smallest but most profitable arm of GM. One example was when some Holden engineers machined up a 3 valve head to go onto their 304 V8. It produced about 35 kW more than the 2 valve V8 it was based on and ran smoother and had zero issues during their own testing. All the hard work was done but GM decided against it. Fools.

@@rrpgarage I’ve almost got every single one. I got the 200/250 Crossflow, 3.9 OHC, a lot of 4.0L OHC and only a handful of 4.0L DOHC. I don’t have the INTEC VCT 4.0L OHC or the 3.2L OHC. Makes me lucky to live here and work on them every day. I even Carb swapped a 3.9. I got a video on my channel

The Barra is actually lighter than a 2JZ and RB26 when fully dressed.

The twin cam engine is still based on the original long block Aussie made 250. [ The 250 block had increased bore spacing in around 71. Actually the same as a Holden 6. There is Holden engines with Falcon heads. The cross flow version is closer and then the single cam EA to AU engine.
So many waffle crap about these tough engines. It boils down to throw enough boost at it . While ok as a n/a engine they are really nothing special. And hair dryers are for girls!!
