I've done a few Case (stainless) blades, with a very fine even "hamon", just by taping off the bolster, (ie, no need for disassembly) and applying the ferric chloride with a very soft artists paint brush.. I always use baking soda, to neutralise the acid, and you can partially rub off the "patina", with any metal polish, until you end up with a very old worn look,.. I also like to do the "inside" of Spyderco holes, to give them a dark contrast, with the shiny flats of the blade,,, (using just a Q tip) Best part of all this, is it's fairly easy to remove or rectify mistakes, with elbow grease and metal polish.. Just my 2 cents.. 🙂
Looks awesome Knathan 👏👍. Thanks for sharing info . I tried some muriatic acid from Home Depot and added some vinegar and piece of steel wool and it worked good . The muriatic acid went non acidic over the winter somehow . So I ll get some ferric chloride with the link when I’m ready . Thanks
Great job on this video. I love that you don’t mind sharing your techniques with the community. I would love to have you do a custom knife for me one day, but I know how busy you are so no new orders at this time. At least I can try out some of these techniques on my cheap knives 🔪
Hey Knathan! 👋🏻 Big fan of your work and an aspiring knife customizer myself (& only for my own amusement).. I had a question for you if you don't mind me asking. What's the best / most durable way you know of to black-wash steel (D2 for example)? I like this chemical you used but is there a way to keep it darker in the end? Could you add black paint / dye to the mixture? With hopefully no unwanted reactions taking place. 😅🎉
Hello and thank you! The only way I know of getting it darker is to get some sort of black coating🤔 I'm still currently experimenting with different finishes.
Yeah the baking soda neutralizes the acid. I actually ran through all the colors. It was my first time. As of now the pocket clip is blue and scales are green. Prob do a 2 tone this weekend for the permanent color.

Appreciate the advice and technique, I'll have to give this a try!
That's a cool idea for the spydie hole, contrast is always a great look!
Hi Knathan 🤝,отличная работа, SUPER 💯👌🔥
Hello!🤜🤛
Wow man that's a rad finish you put on that blade. 👏🏻

Sounds good, it works great for etching 🙂

Ferric chloride will only get it to a really dark grey no matter how long you soak it. You would have to use dlc or pvd for a black.

Why not just dip it in a water and baking soda bath? Looks cool as shit dude. I'm gonna try this. Just anodized my ti kizer cormorant.
I haven't tried that method before but I'll give it a go.
Thank you! What color did you anodize it?
