      Or, they ask legitimate questions and answers with deferential answers. He defers to the Bible, because he interprets the question to be about what the Bible says. And because of time, it seems that is all that the person is asking. But really it's a question of whether or not it IS right, not whether the Bible says it's right. And that's harder to answer because that's a question of whether you want to accept the Bible as a consistent source of truth, which it is not.

    • @TristanHayes
      @TristanHayes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @@SwordTune If you were a Christian like Dr. Turek then you would have to accept the Bible as divinely inspired scripture and the inerrant word of God. So why would you bother asking a Christian apologist whether he agrees with the bible or not?
      Dr. Turek has articulated his opinion again and again that there is no moral authority besides God and that morality can't exist without God, otherwise "morality" would be purely subjective opinion on what a person or group of persons prefer. Meaning that it can not be "right" or "wrong," because it is merely a matter of subjective opinion.
      So if a man believes there can be no moral authority besides God and that God's divinely inspired and inerrant scripture states something to be the case, from that line of reasoning it IS the case.
      "it's a question of whether or not it IS right, not whether the Bible says it's right."
      These therefore, are the same, whether or not it IS right and whether or not the Bible says it IS right are one and the same from a Christian perspective.

    • @SwordTune
      @SwordTune 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TristanHayes He still does not explore the discrepancies within the Bible. His answers are simple ones which defer to one version of the textual source rather than critically analyzing it and his own interpretation.

    • @TristanHayes
      @TristanHayes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@SwordTune Again, one can not be a Christian and believe the Bible is in error so your starting premise is requiring him to refute the beliefs he is defending. All "discrepancies" as far as I'm aware can be explained away rather easily frankly or explained by correct textual understanding or understanding of the original Hebrew / Greek texts.

      @Mr. Rogers All "discrepancies" as far as I'm aware can be explained away rather easily frankly or explained by correct textual understanding or understanding of the original Hebrew / Greek texts.
      And no, the standard of morality does not change from the old testament to the new testament.
      The burden of proof falls on you to prove otherwise in both of these cases. Making such statements as if they are facts without any evidence to back them up is asinine. I'm not going to try to find the same exact "100 distinct factual discrepancies" list you found. Provide examples or citations.

      Again I will tell you. If I am in love with another guy and we practice sex and only good feelings occur, why this is sin? Because your Bible says so? So if there was no Bible or God there wouldn't be justice or concepts or right or wrong. No it isn't, and the fact is that homosexuality has always existed. And I remind you that many heterosexual people practice oral, anal sex, orgies and so on. The fact is the world is becoming more sexualixed than ever, and also in the country "under" God.
      Do you know that here in Europe many people are agnostics or atheist or just don't care a damn about your religion and their societies are modern and fair and criminality is very low (and so on!). Maybe because we don't need prayers and base our morality in other standards. We think by ourselves, i don't need an owner of my mind. I create my reality every day.
      You have a real problem in the States, when we look at you, we, believe it or not, think "these americans are crazy". Guns, wars, criminality, ignorance, aggressive materialism, stupid icons (superbowl!??), racism, terrible health care... Yes we also have part of this stupid behaviors but we're not giving lessons day and night to other nations.
      It seems you haven't learnt anything from your wise scriptures. Or maybe that is the result of following them. Go to Alabama or Oklahoma and tell me why they're not the best examples for humankind when it's full of religious people.
      Me, an atheist would be considered a non-citizen (non-patriot too) by the former President, Bush. That's racists, stupid and inmoral. Crazy. Goodness is not a question of belief, is a question of who you are, and how you behave. Period.
      And homosexuality is an sexual orientation, and if there is a God, then he should accept it because there are hundred of millions of them who haven't decided to be so (why he created the world this way??). Because sexual orientation is not something you can easily change. You're blaming, insulting all of them just because you have a different concept of sin. And in some countries they're prosecuted and killed, and be sure it's because a religious thinking. Why do you think of that? Atrocious.

    • @gchova
      @gchova 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't want to assume you behave the same as many other christians who hate homosexuals. If you understood that, I apologize. But I have heard and read many hateful words against homosexuals one million times and that's horrible.
      By the way, here there are homosexuals, they don't have problems with their sexuality, their friends accept them, I accept them, everybody is happy and no harm is produced, so please don't come here and try to i ntroduce your morality to convert everybody in sinners.
      We are far from accepting you beliefs. It's your opinion. I don't care about your God, I don't believe in it so for me that's not an valid argument, in fact is a zero-argument.
      I know about fine-tuned universe and about the complexity of DNA but even those arguments being solid and acceptable (we can discuss that for long) that doesn't mean that they point to a judeo-christian God. Remember that a good percentage of scientists are atheists, and those who believe don't necessarily follow religions tenets. I'm 100% atheist about religion gods but I open a door for an existence of a creator of the universe, I declare myself ignoran to answer that question. At least, I'm humble.

      Ludvig Burman lust is not involuntary... You consciously decide to look at an attractive woman or man and then consider what you would do with that person sexually... On the other hand, you could look away until that thought subsides... Because I'm pretty sure you are an attractive person and your parents are probably attractive people also... If you have any siblings...I think it's safe to say that they are attractive as well...
      I can be almost 99% sure that the thought of sex with your parents or siblings is utterly and totally disgusting and gut-wrenchingly so...
      I say 99% because you could be involved in incest... However, if you are not (and I'm pretty sure you are not) then, it's 100%...
      Please don't make excuses for bad behavior... The only things we do that are involuntary are breathing, blinking and heart beating and blood flow...
      I could be wrong on this last point, but I would go so far as to assert that we feel voluntarily (meaning stimuli interacting with our skin) because one can be placed in a sensory deprivation tank and then we would no
      t "feel" sensations. But again, there are potentially 10,000 holes in that logic...

      Have you ever found a woman attractive? I know I have, plenty of them. There is nothing wrong with finding someone attractive. Otherwise finding someone to marry would be pretty hard because usually you want each party to find the other attractive before they are married. Likewise, even if it's 2 members of the same sex finding each other attractive it's not a sin. That FEELING of finding someone attractive is not a sin, no matter the gender of the 2 parties.
      Lust is something different. It is thinking of/holding on to the feeling of wanting to sleep with a person. Just as finding someone attractive and its relation to sin does not depend on the 2 genders involved, likewise lust and its sinfulness does not depend on the genders involved. A man lusting after a woman is a sin, and a man lusting after a man is a sin. Regardless of the genders, it is a sin because it is lust.

      I agree Turek's answer was spot on. He separates attraction which is not a choice from action which is always a choice. The one thing that I hoped he could have touched on if there were more time allowed is how even lust (unfettered desire) is not the same as attraction. Say for example I am attracted to wealth. That attraction in and of itself is not a sin, we know, because there are plenty of wealthy people in the Bible whom God blessed with abundance. But if I start to crave wealth to the point where I will sin in my heart (envy/coveting) or sin with my hand (stealing), then that attraction has gone too far.
      .
      There's a sharp distinction between natural attraction that produces righteous desires and evil desires that over the long-run lead to evil acts. This is why Jesus says that if a man looks at a woman with lust, he has committed adultery in his heart. Lust is the sin of adultery in the mind; fornication by or with a married person is the sin of adultery in the body. One sin (adultery) manifests itself in two different ways. But I can look at a woman and think, "Wow, she is really a beautiful human being physically; praise God for his gift of physical beauty!" and there is no sin. My nature attraction to women is not sinful; rather, it is God-pleasing in that it led me to my spouse of 22 years, which according to his plan has formed a marriage that has produced 3 God-fearing children.

    So... let me see if I understand. Like this guy said, people don't choose who they're attracted to. But, if you are attracted to people of the same sex, you're not supposed to act on it? I have several questions:
    1. Why? And don't just say "because the Bible says so". Give me an actual reason. How does homosexuality actually _hurt_ anyone?
    2. So, if you're gay/lesbian, you ought to live your life without romance? You're not allowed to love because of a something that isn't even your fault? Or are you supposed to marry someone you aren't attracted to?
    Not being able to come out has caused many people depression and even suicide. I have a gay friend who has depression largely related to having homophobic parents. You people say you love all, and yet you tell others that their form of love is a sin. You say you don't judge or hate anyone, yet you say they will be judged for loving and that you hate a part of them. Smh.

      Actually, the Bible does not say anything like what this guy claims. While it contains opposition to specific behaviours, there's not broad unequivocal opposition to all sameseks behaviour. A few isolated statements have been blown out of proportion into an insidious kind of theology that pushes people away from God, not towards him.
      On the other contrary, Jesus says all God's commands are based on the command to honour God and do good to one another. Turek's views in this video misrepresent God and harm people (as you point out), so promoting them as he does is blatant immorality.

      Define what love mean. I say that love does not necessarily involve sex. What I see is a culture so engrained with the fulfillment of our sexual desires that we can't even grasp the concept of chastity without feeling it as a wrong imposition. Furthermore, there are so many tendencies that may also be biologically influenced but do not necessarily translate into behaviors as we are able of acting opposed to our natural desires (is a pedophile, for exemple, guilty of their attraction or are they guilty for their action?) . Finally, if God says something is sinful and wrong, who am I to judge it on a moral perspective if I have no objective point of reference (as I have just claimed God is unjust in creating me in a certain way)? I would also add that God does not tempt neither can be tempted, but is our sinful nature which leads to temptation: our sinful desires are not rooted by God in us.

When the thoughts of lust enter your mind do you immediately cast them out or do you entertain them? If simply being tempted is sinning then Jesus is guilty of sin, but Jesus was sinless therefor being tempted is not a sin.

      Actually u are wrong, having same sex attractions is not a sin, acting it out is, having attraction towards a man as another man is not sin its temptation, when u have lustful thoughts or have sex with the man is when it becomes sin. Fix ur logic please. I have talked to many Christians struggling with same sex attraction, as said in 1st Corinthians 6:9-11 men who practice homosexuality (keyword practice). U are not born gay and god did not make u that way. Having same sex attractions is a result of the fallen creation. Same sex attraction can develop over time through experiences. God says in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 that there were homosexuals but he sanctified and glorified them by the blood of Jesus Christ. You can live with same sex attractions as a Christian if u don’t act them out and lust, the goal if ur homosexual and want god to help u should not be heterosexuality but holy sexuality.

      Thinking it is not the sin, pondering the act is the sin. The Bible says that if a man looks on a woman to lust after her it is sin. The key word is "to". It is natural for us to have our desires but acting on them is the issue. If you allow yourself to imagine sex with someone you look upon that you aren't married to that is the sin. Imagining the act and enjoying the thoughts of that act is what Jesus was talking about being sin. It's like when you're angry you just wanna kill someone sometimes, it's a normal human emotion, it becomes sin when you start to contemplate how to do it and how you'll enjoy it and all the details of it. Desires are normal but acting them out, either in real life or in our minds is the difference in it being sin or not. What helps me is when I start thinking about things like that I immediately start thinking of the consequences of it all, I mean long term brother, and it usually stops me dead in my tracks.

Homosexuality isnt something that's only present in humans, it's also present in the aninal kingdom as well.. so I find it extremely unethical for a "holy book" to say that gay relationships are a sin.. furthermore, why do people use the bible as a reference point for morals, it's been changed over the years due to translation and political opinions, so who are we to reference that the bible is right.. Didnt jesus say to love everyone? Why can't we use that logic to help homosexuals and let them be themselves, they cant help their feelings can they?

    Well said. This articulation needs to be more widespread. As well as making the connection that true, authentic love should considers a person’s eternal soul and lifelong health and wellness, as opposed to only looking at earthly desires that may appear to be “love” at face value.

      @Nick Jones Are you denying the existence of good and evil?

    • @BladeOfLight16
      @BladeOfLight16 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nick Jones When you suggested sin doesn't exist. Sin is just a word describing acts that are evil, so if sin is nonexistent as a concept, there can't be good or evil. Don't play games. I'm giving you a chance to be clear on your views because it's impossible for me to discuss them if I've misunderstood. Do you believe that concepts such as good and evil are real or not? If you don't, then I'll answer you one way. If you do, then I'll respond another.

    • @BladeOfLight16
      @BladeOfLight16 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nick Jones We can't have a discussion if I don't know what axioms you're starting from. All human knowledge starts with some basic assumption. I asked about yours because it makes a difference about how to present the argument. If you're not willing to tell me your own starting point for truth, then I can't present an argument you'll accept. This is just the nature of disagreement and debate, which apparently you don't want to engage in. It cannot go one way; you have to be willing to explain your own views as well.

    • @BladeOfLight16
      @BladeOfLight16 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nick Jones Fine, since I have no idea what your starting point is or your objections are, I'll just share a brief summary of my own reasoning. Obviously, you have much to learn in terms of how reasoning (much less argumentation) actually works, as none of the things I've said about your lack of sharing your opinion even needed mentioning beforehand because they're fundamental to any discussion. I know you won't find my response at all convincing, though.
      1. I find the Biblical accounts of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection credible.
      2. I believe the Bible's claim in Jesus' goodness because of the goodness He demonstrated in His life, as recorded in the gospels.
      3. Because He demonstrated His goodness combined with His resurrection, I believe Jesus' claim that He is God incarnate.
      4. Because Jesus is God incarnate, He has the authority to declare the truth, both factual and moral.
      5. Jesus declared the correctness of the moral law in the Old Testament, though He did clarify that the methods of enforcement laid out were specific to Israel's government of the time rather than general commands for all Christians.
      6. The Old Testament law explicitly forbids homosexuality.
      Now that I've wasted my time, perhaps you'd like to be specific so we can actually have a productive conversation.
