  • A VIEW TO A KILL premiered in San Francisco on this day in 1985. In today’s clip 007 takes control of a fire truck to evade the police. Roger Moore said: “San Francisco was a wonderful place to film. Mayor Dianne Feinstein was very helpful. It was lucky as she was one of the rare people that preferred me as Bond instead of Sean, so we got all sorts of permits.”

No one picks up on the fact that the first and last Roger Moore film both had him man a larger vehicle in which he’d have to bypass a seemingly impassable bridge. A double decker bus is exchanged for a fire truck here, and instead of a bridge that is too low, the bridge in A View To A Kill is raised.

Thats because on the original VHS/DVD version ,in one shot, the full crew were visible on the back of the fire truck filming the action. This is probably my second favourite bond film, and I’m well aware of its numerous, Numerous faults, such as Moore whilst still being a fine actor in performance is clearly past it physically in this film.
The romance feels forced given the age difference, the scene where he tucks her into bed in a fatherly manor is probably one of my personal favourites and I wish they had of kept the relationship in that tone.
The soundtrack is probably my favourite of the series, but it’s been a while since I last watched the films, I’m planning to do so in memory of my late grandfather soon, but the title song by Duran Duran is my favourite of the series line up.
Christopher Walken, I’ve only seen him in four films, this being one and three of them are often considered bad whilst one an all time classic, for the sake of not being lynched I won’t say which particular classic I dislike, but as a Bond villain for the angle they go I’d say is more interesting in design than most give credit for, they use a real life tragedy being the Holocaust and it’s monstrous experiments as the villains origin story, and that’s getting really real for a non Daniel Craig Bond Film.
Grace Jones is probably the most out of place casting in the series, that said I love it, it’s so mid eighties it’s brilliant, he switching sides is probably another personal favourite moment, and I have a feeling she knew she could jump from the bomb but she knew because she was in part responsible for what Zorran wanted to do she chose to die.
Patrick Macnee is probably one of the most charming casting choices, especially for the role he fulfils, it feels like the act between Bond and Sir Godfrey is just Moore and Macnee having fun as friends, it’s so easily believable, and you can tell the two are having more fun than they have a right too, and I am genuinely saddened by the characters death, although this is the third film in a row to have a “bonds male ally dies” part, and with every subsequent use they have they seem to improve on it, and I’d say in a hindsight viewing it may lend some credibility to Sean Beans fake out death in Golden eye that and numerous films blow an actors credit out of proportion.
Dolph Lundgren, as a fan of many action movies that are just overall stupid in tone or are often relegated to cult classics his first appearance before he hit it big is charming to see his acting debut.
It’s painfully obvious that the regular cast is past it in this film, Moore, Brown, Maxell and Llewelyn are clearly too old, and whilst Brown would be retained until the soft reboot with Golden eye and Q would be held onto until Llewelyns unfortunate passing it’s clear that whilst each other amazing and charming was too old, especially for a movie that is clearly trying to appeal to a younger demographic.

Agreed the shrieks were irritating but I think people tend to overlook how helpful she actually was to Bond. She drove that truck around without hitting crashing it like a pro. And she saved Bond's ass multiple times at the airship scene at the end.

Moore saying Feinstein was one of the "rare" people who preferred him to Connery - Hardly! Moore is my favorite - I liked the humor and the lightness Moore brought to the role as the entire thing is so fantastical regardless of who plays Bond - and, too, I always found Connery's Bond kind of creepy and skeevey but I think that is likely because I find Connery himself to be less than likable (personal opinion, obviously). For the period these later ones were filmed, Moore was considered getting long in the tooth but now no one is saying the same about Tom Cruise who himself is 58 years old, one year older than when Moore stopped playing Bond. The perception of age has shifted somewhat the last 20 years -
And, to Moore's credit, he himself wanted to quit earlier in part because he knew it looked pretty unseemly to have someone in their 50s bedding young women in their early 20s.

    • @scottknode898

It is because Roger Moore brought the light hearted side to Bond with the tongue in cheek humor where Dalton, Brosnan and Craig brought back the seriousness of Bond with some humor. Dalton and Craig wanted to bring back Bond to how things were in the Bond novels which were more serious and darker. Even Connery and Lazenby could be serious as Bond with little humor but not over loaded like the Moore films.

A ladder truck like that has a tiller, or 2nd steering wheel, to steer the long back end carrying the ladder. By steering the tiller Bond could cut off, block or otherwise try to shake the pursuing cops. You see him doing it once he reaches the tiller cab.

Live And Let Die imo is Moore's best bond film. Alwsys will be. As for A View To A Kill, I didn't like it when it was released but over the years it has really grown on me. I now really like it and appreciate the story and the villains. Zorin and May Day are superb especially Zorin portrayed brilliantly by the great Christopher Walken. This is a good bond film and ranks up there with Live And Let Die of Roger Moore's tenure as Bond.
