  • This is my 1983 Shovelhead chopper with some annoying throwout bearing issues in a 4 speed ratchet top transmission - year unknown.
    I've been working with some guys at chopcult forums to diagnose and fix what's going on.
    Feel free to follow the journey -

    If there is no slack in your clutch cable (1/4” per the manual) it’ll eat your throwout bearing.

    Ive had that same problem and I can see right off that your oil slinger is worn thru onto the shaft . It has a rectangular hole that goes over the shaft behind the two washers and the wafer bearing . You have to make sure you use the right length pushrod shaft of the year of your trans . 70 to 78 use the automotive type bearing , early 79 to 83 use a wafer type bearing . Dont quote me on that but i think thats close . Yours looks to be a ratchetlid which is early type . Get you a manuel its worth what you pay for it , believe me . thanks and good luck !

    The short you posted about the lever play? Did you resolve it or figure out if it was too little play? I have the same question after rebuilding my kicker gear and assembling. Thank you!

    I just did a fix on a blown umbrella. I dont get why it has such a narrow shoulder for the umbrella to rest on. I think when the clutch is pressed too far in your jockey set up it just folds the inner bearing washer and it pushes the umbrella off its tiny shoulder and then the umbrella just floats around on the shaft. Its a shit design.I machined out the umbrella and got a thick washer and filed that dumb oval type hole in it and welded the washer to the umbrella and then faced the washer in my lathe till it fitted tight with bearing and circlip.If it happens on my bike I will weld a circle of 3-4mm wire around shaft under umbrella so it can never ride over the narrow flats.

    That was a crappy set up , your not the only person with this problem , use the old style bearing and your problem will be solved . Yes you can put electric start on that .

    Retrofit the pre1975 throwout bearing in there. They can handle much more abuse.

      moonjude1 yeah ive ran over 1000mi on the witch hat and love it. wafer style is too finicky for foot clutches - at least in my opinion

      @@carls1563 Did you have to switch kicker cover or modify the one you had for the witch hat bearing?

      @@MrGideskog .ive been wanting someone to answer me the same question ... My problem is losing or breaking the e-clip or snap ring , whatever it's called...3 of them this past weekend , dammit ...

    • @MrGideskog
      @MrGideskog ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lonesometinman3147 After some research you have to have a specific kicker cover for the wich hat bearing. I have a complete wich hat with the rod, but i need a earlier kicker cover to make it fit. If you having problem with the e-clip falling off try another clip like a c-clip and buy a new rod. Make sure to adjust youre clutch properly aswell.
