Penzance Massive High Tide - Inches away from Flooding - Cornwall 4K

  • After seeing that a number of places in Cornwall had been flooded on this morning's high tide I thought I'd go and check out Penzance Harbour. Spring high tides combined with a bit of a storm surge and low pressure made for one of the highest tides I recall seeing.
The only time I remember seeing a higher tide was around 20 years back during a monster storm. That time the water did make it over the wall separating the car park from the harbour and I remember a couple of cars bobbing around.
This time the water did almost make it over the road at the end of Ross Bridge and as always on big high tides the water covered the road at the foot of Abbey Slip. You can usually walk across on the higher footpath, but not this time. Still the swimmers enjoyed it!
For comparison I've put up some photos from 19 years ago which was apparently the highest tide in around 40 years: • Photos from Huge Penza...

You've got some winds coming in the next couple of days, I hope this is the peak of the high tide otherwise they're going to be in trouble.

Was in PZ for my fiftieth birthday mid-February 2014 - the winds and sea state then were phenomenal, sadly quite a lot of damage along the front. Believe a rock was thrown through the roof of the Dolphin just after we left!

@@cornwallguide Yup, got the bus back from St Just in the afternoon (14th?), as we came down Market Jew Street, I glanced down a side street and the waves seemed to be higher than us! We must have been at least 50' above mean sea level! I think there were several days of rough weather, trip down the previous day was very windy and wet, came down the M4/M5 rather than the A303. The Dawlish section of the railway was already out of action and the track at PZ station was flooded. A birthday to remember! 60 next Feb, might have to visit my home town again! 🙂

Pensans doesn't have much of a problem with tidal flooding - not compared with somewhere like Looe where severe flooding of the town centre is actually expected and planned for whenever a Spring (king) tide coincides with a storm surge caused by high winds in the "wrong" direction?

Well it isn't really, is it... It's a big spring tide with strong winds and low pressure pushing it higher. If you think it's normal for the water to nearly top the car park wall or wash over the road then you really don't have a clue.

What the average rate since 1915 is irrelevant. Try telling your bank manager that your huge overdraft is irrelevant because your average balance since you opened your account is just as huge.
Current rate of rise is 3.6mm/year. Penzance is safe for the rest of the century at least at that rate.
