I believe some Irish farmers gave Mountbatten some fertilizer in the end. Or was it a gelatin cake? Probably wasn't a farmer either. Never realized the roll he had in carving up India, just that he was governor general at some point. He screwed up as Royally as the Brits who carved up the Middle East, Sykes-Picoh, after the great war. If you can't rule the people yourself, better to have them preoccupied with each other. Seems the Sikhs would have had more of an axe to grind with him than the Irish. After watching this video it's possible the Irish just love the Sikhs. Then again I don't know a ton about him, just that he was living in the north, a hero of the realm, a high royal family member, the stories I saw about him made him out to be a sympathetic grandfather out on his simple little boat.
I find it personally embarrassing that I didn't know any of this information until watching this, despite Sikh's being the reason I can make this post today. When I became homeless in my teens, I wandered the streets until I passed by a Sikh temple and was invited in for a meal and to rest. I shared my story with them and since I had nothing else to do, I found myself going back time and time again, less often for a meal and more just to spend more time with the people who I felt had 'saved' me. It is incredibly heartbreaking to hear the history of hate directed towards a group of people thought of as, in your own words, "The sword of the Nation".

Thank you for summarizing the topic effectively. Now I can fwd this video to everyone who wants to learn more about the issue rather than explain it myself for an hour.
I'm a Hindu from Himachal Pradesh and I have to say, Sikh people are some of the warmest, kindest and friendliest people I've ever met. There's a Gurudwara near my home, and me and my family have been there a number of times, we have even prayed there, and have partaken in the Langar Seva. We have also been to the Golden Temple and prayed there. There's something so beautiful about the experience, and I always love the calm and quiet. We have neighbours who are Sikhs, and when they had a little boy, they invited us alongwith all their family go the Gurudwara I was talking about earlier. We never once felt alienated or unwelcome. That's the beauty of diversity if it's done right, and I dearly hope that my country's people overcome their prejudices against each other, because they're missing out on a wholesome experience of getting to experience someone else's culture, and share their happiness.
People today don’t realize how bad the discrimination against Sikhs following Indira Gandhi’s assassination had become in the country. Celebrities who are household names today like Amitabh Bachchan himself were openly giving speeches advocating for more violence against them back then. They have never been held accountable for any of it.
Amitabh Bachan was a full blooded Congressi and thats the dark truth of Congress which claims it was always secular. Everyone knows how 'secular" Congress was and is.

Easy to say these words, harder to bring them into being. The more I watched this video, honestly, the more it broke my heart. I am an Indian Hindu, and I have grown up with a lot of respect and adoration for all communities in the country be it the Sikhs or the Jains. I had absolutely zilch of an idea that Sikhs are somehow being pressured to assimilate or give up their unique identity in one way or another by the Indian government. India is not a country which has ever been 'uniform in identity' ever in its history. Even during the ancient period of the Indus Valley civilization, we had three to four ethnic groups inhabiting our land. I also bow my head in respect to the Sikhs who must be having SO MUCH faith in this land and its culture, that despite so many atrocities they are still peacefully negotiating and actually willing to cooperate with India in every sphere. This is one community that has given a lot to us, and we cannot allow them to be marginalized or be tainted as the villain. I don't care about foreign Sikhs, but the Sikhs who live in the Indian state of Punjab deserve to have their demands HEARD and discussed. India is a union of states, not a Hindu colonization of non-Hindu subjects and I hope it doesn't turn out that way ultimately because of political powers in this country. Well researched and very well put together. Certain areas probably needed even more elaboration but to sum up such a vast issue in one hour is commendable in it's own right. Very well done! Keep it up!
The 1986 declaration of Khalistan was during an arrest on site curfew where still a million were able to reach the golden temple and declare Khalistan and an armed resistance against their genocide by a religious meeting called a Sarbat Khalsa, which means the people of the religion have to follow what was declared or announced at the last Sarbat Khalsa
What needs to be followed are the votes of Punjabi’s during elections. Like most developed nations, religion and state needs to be separated in the modern world During the Guru’s time we did not have a political institution and army to protect our people. Now India has that. There is a reason 8% of the Indian army is from the Sikh people while only 3% of the population of India. They are loyal to their motherland. Their motherland isn’t just the boundaries of current day Punjab. Any Sikh still thinking they can mix religion and state is no different to a modern day Islamist. Move on. The Sikh dharmic based faith allows for evolution.
@@singharkirat No, demand Justice truth and transparency and move towards development and upliftment. @@ujjwalkaushik4664How can we move on, when the same exact things are hapeening to this very day? Polic can arrest anyone and execute in Punjab. Our only solution is our own sovereignty, our own land.
First video of yours and you've earned my sub. This area of history is a complete blindspot for me bar hearing about the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and getting some insight into the history behind it has been eye opening
During the riots of 1984, more than just Delhi had been affected. In my city of Kolkata (back them it was Calcutta), the local Congress leadership alongside several Congress supporters had organised large teams to basically hunt down any Sikhs they found. Now back then Calcutta had far more Sikh Punjabis than now, since back then the Sikhs formed the base of our taxi and bus systems, working as drivers and mechanics. I still remember how my father told the stories to me, about how the streets fell silent after the news broke on Doordarshan (the only tv channel at that time) about Mrs. Gandhi's death. She may have been a partial dictator, but again remember she was EXTREMELY popular among the poor and underprivileged, for being a sort of "messiah figure" as a dedicated 'socialist'. So anyways, the next day news broke out about some rioting across the city, though most of it was controlled because West Bengal was under the CPI(M) back then (the Communist Party of India - Marxist). However, my grandmother and a friend of hers, while returning home from work, found that in Dhakuria (southern Calcutta), a mob had stopped a school bus and were intent on burning it down along with its driver and all the kids (schoolgirls from a nearby girls' school), because the driver was a Sikh! Now my grandmother literally jumped onto the bus entrance and started shouting "BURN ME FIRST AND THEN BURN THE KIDS", while her friend rushed to our home back then, and brought my grand uncle, and then he calmly negotiated with the mob leaders and managed to save the bus and the kids, by explaining how the kids had done nothing wrong, and that the bus driver would need to take them home safely, and so on (he had that ability to defuse situations, you can expect that from someone who got a Ph.D under Jan Tinbergen himself). My grandmother later narrated how the driver was shivering in fear when the mob were shouting about burning him, but she managed to hold them long enough for grand uncle to come and defuse the situation. Now she was an old timer member of the CPIM too, you can expect this level of insane heroism from their cadres of back then. I always feel rather proud of how she managed to save those children and the driver all along. However, the sad part would be that most Sikhs would eventually leave Calcutta, due to many reasons like growing urban unemployment and strict price/wage controls under the CPIM government. Still, atleast I can say with some pride that my grandmother helped save a fellow brother in our beloved nation ☺️🇮🇳
Using “Beloved Nation ☺️” in the same comment description that same nation committing genocide, shows the subconscious bond with a genocidal country that subconsciously makes people hate the khalistani restoration movement
@@awesomestevie27 The government didn't do those, you know. It's like saying that modern Germany is a genocidal country. Khalistan also costed the lives of several innocent Hindus too. Additionally, most Sikhs don't even want independence in India today.
Thank you so much for this incredibly detailed video. It took me several days to finally start it because I knew the subject matter would be heavy. But I'm so glad I did. To this day, my mother won't talk about what she witnessed during the insurgency in Punjab. I think you could have briefly mention the role of the rivers and the politics behind the various dams and canals that were built to divert water away from Punjab (which is already dangerously low on groundwater). I also think the role of Punjabi music, especially in the last 10 years, cannot be understated. Artists like Sidhu Moosewala helped connect diaspora Punjabi youth to the real issues back in Punjab, and at least started conversations about mutually shared problems facing the region. Thank you again for this excellent video; hope to see even more interesting topics covered.
This has been the best argument against “gun control” I’ve ever seen. The best part is how the government just suspended their laws when they didn’t want to follow them and told cops to do whatever they wanted. “But why would you ever need firearms??”
I'm from the UK and live near a Gurdwara, and I've always been amazed by the Sikh communities' charity and tolerance in my area. In any crisis, for anyone of any nationality or religion, the Sikhs were there to help. There was this one incident i remember quite vividly. Covid-19 issues left hundreds of delivery drivers stranded at the ferry crossing, which would take them to France usually, and they were not allowed to leave their lorries. The Sikh community came and provided food free of charge to the drivers and made sure they had essentials. I think we could all take a leaf out of their teachings.
Thank you for this! This was yet again such a wonderfully painstakingly detailed documentary. I especially am grateful for this one as a Canadian citizen who knew far too little about the topic! I’ve been interested in the topic since the assassination of Nijjar and the subsequent political fallout but have known very little of the background. Thank you so much for this! I love your work! I know you have made a short video on the division of Ireland but I would absolutely love to see a similarly detailed video on the history of the troubles there!
I am a British born Sikh jatt now living in Canada. I am amazed how many Sikh youth in Canada blindly support the Khalistan movement while either never having been to India or being born in Canada. I hope that this documentary, rings home why Khalistan as a movement arose, but why also the Sikhs and Punjabi’s generally living in India are NOT in support of an independent Khalistan state. They want to be an integral part of India, while at the same time having a degree of autonomy The ignorant fuelling of Sikh jatts in the west, does not help the cause. What would help is the push for a diplomatic truth and reconciliation, which pushes for increased powers for Punjab and reignites a wider geographical area identified as Punjab as was allocated in 1947. Punjab needs the type of investment the modi govt is doing in Kashmir, which has quelled the discontent there. Punjab needs that type of investment to give the youth a better future in India. India is now the 5th largest economy in the world. There will be a time in the next 20-30 years that the Indian diaspora will want a return or the youth of India will no longer look to the west to live and earn. Hopefully Punjab can also have a Bangalore kind of northern hub

I only learned of Operation Blue Star and of Bendwali(sp) just a couple of years ago. Even scoured YT for more information, and only came across one documentary about Bendwali - in Hindi with no English subtitles, so it was useless for me to learn anything about the backdrop of how it all started. So thank you Sir! I know much more about this event thanks to you ;-).
Despite all the unfairness, almost all punjabis, including myself, love and prefer to stay in India. But the problem is the moment anyone speaks about injustice in Punjab or against Sikhs, the government’s PR turn it into Khalistani rhetoric inviting bunch of trolls to mock and condemn all sikhs including those who don’t support the movement. This further fuels the khalistani movement. Having heard how my mom dad families lost so many of their cousins to the militancy and police encounters while growing up, sometimes its hard to swallow the pill of injustice. With that said Khalistani movement is only popular in sikhs who immigrated to foreign countries. During my years in canada, i have seen more support for khalistan than i saw in India.
So, there is a Sikh majority state that never elected a non Sikh as it's CM but cry about unfairness? If there is an unfairness issue it's related state- central govt conflict, not a religious one.
So you are saying there was no Khalistani hand in the farmer protests happening now and before?? Most of the Punjabi music performers support the Khalistani movement. So how can you say the criticism is incorrect??

@@empathy.11 yea and it's not just a story to save our reputation but my dad told me people in the village (in 1980s, 90s) and elders would discuss what they do, they would go into people's house and commit crimes, and there was a clear distinction between these government black cats and militants.
@@user-kg7yj Yes and yes my grandparents told me the exact same thing they saw the militancy period, I even read about this in some books covering the 1990s insurgency
As someone who is also currently deep into research on this topic for a video that focuses more on the modern Canadian-Indian conflict and some questions regarding international law, I enjoyed watching your video and I think you did a great job at capturing the complexity of this issue. There are a few things I’d like to note: 24:07 I think it's more accurate to say that Bhindranwale mainstreamed violence rather than introduced it. There have been numerous violent riots/uprisings in the Punjab and beyond in the 1950s and 1960s between Sikhs and Hindus. And there were some small, disorganised groups of militant Sikhs active before - but it was Bhindranwale that popularised this militant approach and laid the foundation of the crisis to come in the 80s. 28:44 I think it's also important to point out that at least officially, the Indian government desperately tried to not portrait this as a conflict between Sikhs and Hindus. This is also a reason for why Operation Blue Star was in part led by (clean-shaven) Sikhs, as you mention. Nonetheless, tensions between Sikhs and Hindus were enormous by that time and you describe the sad results of that in the video. 56:55 I really like the ending of your video. Whether the Khalistan movement will reignite will definitely depend on how the Indian government will choose to react to Sikh demands and economic woes in the present, but also on how it will choose to deal with the past and the incredibly tragic period of the 80s and 90s. I’m sure your video will attract a lot of angry comments from both sides eventually, but that’s usually the hallmark of a good video in my opinion. Well done!
Brother he said there is no support for Khalistan which is completely untrue, most Punjabis are actually terrified to speak because of police harrassment and arrest, and just choose to ignore and remain silent especially after a aggressive Hindutva government of Modi, if asked most people would definitely support the idea of independent Punjab and that is why the government in no way wants to conduct a peaceful referendum in Punjab or Kashmir because they know it will result in division Almost 80-90 percent people from rural communities go to Canada for studies and migrants from other parts of India flood and change demographics here 😢😢
Stop justifying the massacre of thousands of innocent Sikh men, women, and children. No wonder Hinduism is often perceived negatively. It deserves it. Instead of persecuting and discriminating against the brave men and women of the Sikh community, who have historically defended Hindus for centuries, you should acknowledge their contributions. Is this how you repay those who have given their lives to protect this country? Respect should be given to the Sikh people who continue to defend the country from external threats. Without the Sikh community, India will lose a significant layer of its protection. Learn to show respect to the dedicated protectors of our nation.

What's your views on future of this?
The 1986 declaration of Khalistan was during an arrest on site curfew where still a million were able to reach the golden temple and declare Khalistan and an armed resistance against their genocide by a religious meeting called a Sarbat Khalsa, which means the people of the religion have to follow what was declared or announced at the last Sarbat Khalsa
What needs to be followed are the votes of Punjabi’s during elections. Like most developed nations, religion and state needs to be separated in the modern world
During the Guru’s time we did not have a political institution and army to protect our people.

First video of yours and you've earned my sub. This area of history is a complete blindspot for me bar hearing about the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and getting some insight into the history behind it has been eye opening
What did you see in history of sikhs

Every Indian knows if you're ever in trouble, you can always ask a Sikh for help.
Thank you for this! This was yet again such a wonderfully painstakingly detailed documentary. I especially am grateful for this one as a Canadian citizen who knew far too little about the topic!
They want to be an integral part of India, while at the same time having a degree of autonomy
The ignorant fuelling of Sikh jatts in the west, does not help the cause.
There are a few things I’d like to note:
24:07 I think it's more accurate to say that Bhindranwale mainstreamed violence rather than introduced it.
Well done!
Brother he said there is no support for Khalistan which is completely untrue, most Punjabis are actually terrified to speak because of police harrassment and arrest, and just choose to ignore and remain silent especially after a aggressive Hindutva government of Modi, if asked most people would definitely support the idea of independent Punjab and that is why the government in no way wants to conduct a peaceful referendum in Punjab or Kashmir because they know it will result in division
Almost 80-90 percent people from rural communities go to Canada for studies and migrants from other parts of India flood and change demographics here 😢😢
Stop justifying the massacre of thousands of innocent Sikh men, women, and children.

Asking for a seperate country based on religion is never gonna end well for India. Even in rural areas, people of different faith live amongst each other. Its not as if people from every religion live seperately. It would just create a similar situation like partition in 1947.
Not really, SIkh independence was political, not religious. Many rural Punjabi Hindus saw themselves as basically Sikh, and were with them, as in the farmers protest.
And I say this as someone who doesn't care for Khalistan
@@mk-m6779 I am talking about the viability of the partition. Hindu, Muslim, Sikhs and jains don't live in segregation. Everyone is spread across the country. It would just led to a similar situation in 1947.
@@farukhsheikh5790 Sikhs are largely concentrated in Punjab, and then a few districts alongside.
Regardless, you're missing the point. The asking for a separate country isn't in a vacuum, it is a result of all the things that led up to it, and as said in the video, no one wants to leave.
The best solution, with the diverse cultures, was to have a proper federation with states rights, as proposed in the Anandpur Sahib Resolution, for all states, as is in the USA. But ego and dictatorship took precedence.
@@mk-m6779 You say that you don't care for khalistan, but it seems that you are actively promoting it. Sikhs don't live just in Punjab, I have seen Sikh communities in the remotest town in Bihar near Nepal border, in upper Assam , in Maharashtra and even in arunachal pradesh. Similarly, Even in Punjab there is a large population of Hindus and Muslims.
Seperation would just weaken the whole coalition, and such instances would cause more and more seperatist parties to form, which would just lead to the downfall of the entire country.
@@farukhsheikh5790make india confederation like European union then india will not be weak
Awesome. I wondered when this video was going to be released.
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@CogitoEdu I have added to my Nebula watchlist. Watching it tonight :)
Thanks for reporting. Not just khalistan, nobody can claim indian region but sikhs or punjabi. Because 80 to 90% of people who died for the country at the time of the British or war with pak china were punjabis
running a super massive and super populated & diverse country like india with hundreds of language , religion, traditions etc is ultra difficult task
It however isn't a difficult task to avoid using 1930s Germany tactics to surpress a people, to forcefully deny their cultural existence.
Not if you claim to be the world's largest decomacracy. 😅
@@hi-qj9vzyou don't have to claim it when you actually are. Especially in an area like that. Yes it's not upto the mark when it comes to certain European benchmarks. But between Israel and South Korea, there's only one democracy worth anything in Asia proper. India.
@@ritikshaw5868 india is a decomacracy between 8 pm to 6 am when the night is dark and and you close your eyse..
@@amanpreetkumar9294 maybe according to the British and the Canadian timeline. Come back to India.
I'm not Indian or Sikh, but this was such a painful thing to watch. Everyone deserves to be treated properly. Clearly, the Sikhs were not given the rights and kindness they deserved from the very beginning.
This is extremely well made and well researched. Thank you Cogito.
I am a sikh and there is a fact about the operation blue star that the main media does not discuss, which is that the operation was not an unplanned military action. The military specifically made plans for this attack by recreating the layout of the Golden temple and trained in the mountains so that no one would notice their training. And they attacked several other local gurudwaras in Punjab where there were no reports of any occupancy of weapons. This was purely an attack on the Sikhs and Sant Jarnail Singh was just a way for central government to justify it
Free Khalistan from an Amazigh Muslim. Everyone deserves their freedom.
