  • Arteries are a major component of your circulatory system. When people refer to ‘clogged’ arteries, they refer to the buildup of plaque deposits within them. This plaque contains cholesterol, other fatty substances, and cellular waste products. Over time, plaque buildup can lead to thickened or hardened arteries. This is a condition known as atherosclerosis.
    Treatment will depend on the severity and location of your plaque buildup. The authors of a 2020 review note that reversing atherosclerosis involves managing all major risk factors, including:
    • reducing high cholesterol
    • reducing high blood pressure
    • quitting smoking if you smoke
    Diet (eating plan), physical activity, and stress management may also help you “unclog” your arteries. However, revascularization with either angioplasty with stenting or bypass surgery may be needed to prevent or manage complications.
    Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan. This diet emphasizes vegetables, fruits, and whole grains while limiting or avoiding saturated fat, sugar, and salt.
    Healthy dietary patterns such as the DASH diet may lower LDL cholesterol and reduce plaque.
    The DASH diet recommends lean meats, fish, poultry, and low fat dairy products. Eggs are high in dietary cholesterol. Aiming for a healthy dietary pattern that includes a variety of fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and legumes may be a more positive and realistic way to focus efforts rather than seeing a diet as a restrictive measure to remove types of foods you enjoy.
    Eating certain foods may help prevent clogged arteries and lower your risk of heart disease. Some examples include berries, beans, tomatoes, fish, oats, and leafy greens.
    Atherosclerosis occurs when fatty deposits accumulate along artery walls. You may have heard this condition referred to as clogged arteries or hardening of the arteries.
    Atherosclerosis causes the arteries to narrow and restricts blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.
    • Foods high in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other beneficial compounds may help prevent plaque from forming in your arteries. These foods may include i: nuts and seed olive oil, berries, some types of fish, certain vegetables and leafy greens.

    These foods are rich in antioxidants and some other nutrients which can reduce inflammation in blood vessels and arteries which can lower risk of plaque in blood vessels
