    During the time I was repairing consumer electronics there was a company that specialized in idler wheels. If they didn't have right one in stock they were able to rebuild your old one.

    Idler wheel turntables, in good condition, are quite well regarded for low noise as well. Arguably better than direct drive.
    The thing that tends to kill them is the rubbers going hard and deteriorating. The flat spot can cause a knock noise every time it hits the spot too. Personally, I really like idler wheel turntables.
    It is great to see a Jukebox video again. It has been a while

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can't ever completely get the motor rumble out of them, i'm going to experiment on the next one and see the best way to isolate it. I'm sure it's probably motor mount grommets but i'll do some a/b testing and figure it out :) Thanks for watching Brendan!

    • @EsotericArctos
      @EsotericArctos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LyonsArcade Most likely the rubbers/grommets. Once the rubber starts going a little hard, the noise transfers through a lot more. Even the idler wheel, if it is hard, will transfer noise. A lot of turntables, liek Garrard and Dual (I have a couple of these) are very collectable and they are idler style turntables.
      As a note, also check the bearings on the motor itself. Jukeboxes often get hammered and the bearings can become a bit sloppy. :)

    The bronze bushing on idler wheel should not be loose. Spring keeper on underside of wheel should be pushed up to hold bushing tight against wheel. That will also get rid of wobble.

    I couldn't help but think of this (not an authentic or restoration idea): to fix the 'now playing' indicator, you could cover all three digits with a very tinted piece of plastic, put three bright lights in corresponding places over the digits, and add light baffles to prevent light from leaking from the 'j' to the 'k'. Attach the letter column lights to the the "shutter" solenoid connections, and you'd have a kinda trick little display no one's ever seen before. (unless that's been done before)

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's actually a very good idea, that would work. You might need a certain voltage bulb or a resistor on it but it would work just fine.....

  • @TheStig1961

    Is there a ring of some "protective textile" on the turntable? Other wise it may scrath the record. By the way i reckommend you to put a new ideale Wheel. It's almost impossible to repair the old one. The dents are too deep. Elvis Presley will turn in his grawe🙄 If you play

    I love repairing stuff but I really do hate some of those 'first power ons' or 'smoke tests'. I suppose there's a fair bit of chaos possible with the record gripper arm if it goes wrong. Makes me wonder if people have blog photo posts of 'juke box crashes' or something like that.

    Dumb question: How the hell does the record not fall out the bottom as the basket rotates. Is there something gripping the record while in the basket? Edit: oh! The belt/band that goes around the basket serves double duty to rotate the basket and keep the records held in from falling out. So cool! The engineering that went into these old mechanical machines is just amazing to me, how they thought of the system of gears and pins, and motors that could pull a record out and place it on the correct side and put it back again. Just wow.

    With the wires to power the coils right there it should have hit you. If you can't get a replacement for the pointer and coil assembly you can use a pair of light bulbs or LEDs (depending on preference) to indicate which record letter is selected. • @LyonsArcade

      It shouldn't be able to do that, there is a piece on the cam that hits the switches, that keeps the gripper arm from moving after the basket is moving. It will only move one or the other... so you may have to adjust that cam and look at those switches. Look @ the first adjustment of this document:

    Very fascinating to be learning from you how these old jukeboxes work without having any electronics just like an EM pinball machine. I watch all of your videos because ya never know what's coming up next!

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Ray.... I don't think people were necessarily smarter back then, it's just the logic made more sense, pretty much the same exact things are going on inside the IC's we use now, just exponentially more actions happening exponentially faster.... So in one way people don't necessarily understand the modern logic as well, but it's much more complex too.
