    I think empathy is a survival characteristic which allows people living in a difficult environment to help others and in return get help. Therefore it increases the chance of survival since by helping others we are more likely to get help.
    As people get richer, they need less help from others and therefore are less likely to provide help too. And this new environment causes a reduction in their empathy.

    I very much think it all depends on the country & culture & person. I’ve met super wealthy people that are really kind and serve their communities & others. I’ve met poor people who are selfish, ruthless and don’t care for others. I’ve also met the reverse. So it depends on upbringing, country, mindset, etc.

    Maybe empathy is often , though not always, based in a fear that the bad thing you see could happen to YOU. As you do well financially, that fear reduces and so does your empathy?

    I read about another study, one which has been replicated at least several times, that revealed that rich people are worse at reading people's faces and thereby interpreting their emotions. That's because they don't have to. They can transgress more easily and often without facing consequences for it. Compare to a poor person, or one living in a bad neighborhood. They generally also have a boss rather than are the boss. Therefore not being able to read people's faces and intentions is perilous, as opposed to of no consequence.

    Thank you for an interesting talk. I have bought the book on awe. But I fear this particular point was not well explored.
    There may be a real correlation here, but (i) what is the effect size and (ii) what is the variance of compassion responses among rich and poor?
    I suspect (i) small and (ii) large (the point that human behavioural characteristics tend to have high variance is made elsewhere in the same interview).
    I.e. I suspect (i) rich people will be just a bit less compassionate on average and (ii) there will be loads of compassionate rich people and loads of uncaring less-rich people.

    Power and money reveal the true character of an individual. Functions of empathy have some hard wiring and some don't make that connection.

However, he told me stories of being a kid at school and not understanding when kids were in a group laughing; he wasn't able to connect with it. So chicken or egg who knows. It all sounds very depressing and a little pathetic. The path to success is gaining happiness through the joy you give to others. I can think of nothing worse than, chasing that endless desire for things, material wealth leads in the end is emptiness.

    When a person is rich, they are affluent, which means they have more privileges than the average person. They are treated with more consideration and respect. It makes them believe they are better. Rich people aren't generous with their time. A person has to be selfish to become rich. Ordinary people are taught being selfish is bad and so they view being selfish in that way. I could author a book on all the ways that separate the rich from the broke.

    I’d be interested in a parallel study of "distaster fatigue" meaning "rich" people are hit up by anyone poorer than them all the time (studies of lottery winners confirms this too) and I imagine they'd become fatigued/avoidant of others problems over time. If you do the maths, wealthier people did give it away to everyone who asked, everyone would only have 100 bucks (non life changing sums) and they (the rich) would be poor. Controversial quote but worth debating both sides "one thing we can do to help the poor is not become one of them".

      @HighAcuity ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not remotely true. Studies have shown even people who ‘earned’ their wealth become quickly out of touch and less empathetic towards the plight of less wealthy people. Although the idea of ‘earned’ riches is also an interesting misnomer because even the new rich disregard the facts based around how they acquired their wealth and how hard they actually worked compared to their peers. Example: a lawyer who works in the financial industries works long hours but doesn’t accept that their high salaries are paid for by exploiting money in the form of fines and interest that banks charge the poor.

    Experimental design counts for lots of what outcome will be. What about SanFrancisco shoplifting now, that’s not wealthy children of the elite or privileged, and shops shutting down? Class isn’t a real measure. Siblings who gain status and wealth can turn into exasperated ass🏺holes. Interesting to say instead that a humble life may be worth more than a socially engineered life based on measuring wealth. Often the poor are more interesting to talk to than a bubble captured Berkeley phd. Every day actually.
