A joy to watch a master at work. So few people possess or pass on the lessons learned over a lifetime.

My interest was peaked at 3:27, wondering how you were going to stop and reverse that threading tap. Clever way to perfectly align the tool, Doctor. Thanks for the instruction.

Mr. Lawrence: I sense a lot of folks stopped breathing at that point. Thank you for your interest in my video. Ciao, Dick Casey

Mr. Lawerence, I am confidant that many folks stop... and hold their breath at that point in the video. Thanks for your comments.

Great work by a master machinist. I, on the other hand, would have looked for another set of cases on ebay (they run about $100 for non-CS G80s). Another option would be to just run a 1/8 or 1/4 NPT tap down the center and put a pipe fitting to hose adapter in. But I know that approach is not for everyone... Thanks Dick

Hi Dave, thank you for your kind comments. Using tapered pipe threads like NPT (1/8 & 1/4 are too small, the existing opening is already too large), NPT threads are tapered. Even mild tightening applies a 'wedging force' and the thin walls of the aluminum case will be split, and the joint will quickly fail. NPT threads are best in steel or thick cast iron.

I own several AMC singles and a plethora of bits and bobs l've collected over the years. Engine cases and the like are usually being sold because they are already damaged and have been swapped out. So undamaged pairs are becoming harder to find and prices are rising. If you are not buying a complete original bottom end, there is no guarantee what you are buying is a matching pair and the line boring has to be checked across the longitudinal axis of the driveshafts. With old machines it's better to 'cry once' and pay the extra money to be sure the job is done right first time, than 'cry twice' when you have to pull it all apart and do it again, at greater expense, including vehicle recovery if you are a long way from home.

Any suggestions on how to rebuild/restore missing metal from these ports? I have a G80CS case where someone tried to force a gas line fitting into it and broke out a section of wall.

I have successfully TIG welded the ports and re-machined them back to the original BP 1/4x19 thread. This requires the engine to be removed, split, and mounted in a milling machine. Damage to these ports is common. Best wishes, Dick Casey

Heli-Arc welding has been used several times in the past, with good results. However, this obviously requires the engine be disassembled, and the work completed in a milling machine or stout drill press with adequate tooling on hand.
