Hustle...and the fact that Bird was a scoring threat anywhere on the court...makes Bird's passes so incredibly effective 😄 It also makes his fakes so completely destructive to the other team.
Bball IQ is obviously off the charts. At nearly 6'10", there isnt a better passer at his position or size.
And the commentator stated he must lead the league in passes FROM being on THE FLOOR. I dont think Bird led in any numerical statistics in passing.
Yes, that was Pete Maravich. He was on the team for a year...but Bird was passing and faking out players in college, so...not sure how much that influenced Bird.
And his hand/eye coordination is, without question, top 3. Then, Bird is way stronger (and bigger) than most people realize. Plus, he was a good baseball player. Not sure how he was in football 😄 Bet Tom Brady watched Larry for his passing skills. 😉

Larry passing was the killer to most defenses , three touches in 1 second with no time to react. Thread the needle on the run. You are correct with quarterback analogy. Think how happy teammates are to share the court with a wizard who could get you the ball ANYWHERE ANYTIME. Combine this with a guy who won the three point contest 3 years in a row. You HAVE to guard him close and it never seemed to mind how many people you put on him, he came through in the clutch. I saw him one time with 4 people guarding him and he head faked them ALL into jumping together then he calmly made the basket. THE LEGEND LIVES ON.

No one I ever saw saw the court as well as Bird or could make pin-point full-court passes for easy layups off an opponent's made FG like Bird, ever. Bird made assists that no one else would even see. He was the master of the 'baseball' pass and the 'bat' pass--most guys don't even attempt those except on rare occasion. He got guys great looks that otherwise wouldn't get really any looks and he didn't turn it over much. If he isn't in your conversation for GOAT of passing, AND rebounding, AND scoring (he made any shot with either hand and routinely made indefensiveable turn-around fadeaway jumpers from 22'), AND clutch, AND trash-talk, AND impact (more wins and teammates get better--+32 wins rookie year, title in year 2, assisting guys to HOF status, hardest worker, hustle, play through pain, 1st in, last out), AND winning (#2 highest win pct. for career), AND legendary stories told by legends, then keep watching. You are in for some big surprises. Did you know that he made MULTIPLE All-NBA Defensive 2nd Teams and was the LEAGUE-LEADER in Defensive Win-Shares one year? DYK he had a 30-12-10-9-2 game in 31 minutes in '85 at UTAH? DYK he is the ONLY CAREER 24-10-6 player in NBA HISTORY? Like I said, keep watchin'. You are definitely on the right track. Spoiler is that he is the GOAT--his game was on a different level and he did things other guys couldn't even try in all phases of the game and he beat Jordan in every playoff game they played and 65% head-to-head for regular season matchups. Bird broke up more 2-on-1s and 3-on-1s than you would imagine or get a steal AND a game-winning assist in the playoffs against a rival with one touch of the ball, heels raised over the baseline--all in the blink of an eye. He was a cold-blooded killer out there and would embarrass and dominate legends of the game. He didn't win by any means necessary--he gave it to you ANY way he liked--but ALWAYS within the framework of the team. That's how GOAT he was.

Advanced stats for Bird would have been through the roof. He already has the highest win share (a virtual tie with Magic) that any player ever. Bird’s game would translate perfectly in today’s NBA. With the 3’s, the spacing, softer defenses, and inflation on how stats are counted (assists), Bird would be an easy triple double every game, easily 30, 10, 10 and a couple of steals a night, with high efficiency.

  • @AKSBSU

Something unique about Bird compared to other elite passers like Magic or Lebron is that the other guys tend to have the ball much of the shot clock with time to set up plays whereas Bird was constantly creating assists out of nowhere when he barely even has possession of the ball. You got the rebounding of a power forward or center (which is even more crazy considering he played next to McHale and Parish, who grabbed plenty of their own rebounds) from the same guy who passed like an elite point guard yet during many possessions he barely even touched the ball. Imagine having the guards to worry about doing their typical guard things while dealing with the best passing coming from a frontcourt guy. And he could score from anywhere and hit the clutch, game-winning shots.

It was so great growing up in the 80s, watching Bird play ball. Back then, you didn't have ESPN, you didn't have Fox Sports, etc. You got what the three major channels fed you, which was usually the hottest teams at the time. That is, when they played pro ball on air (see Larry Bird is the GOAT video for a bit more on that). So you got a lot of Lakers and Celtics games versus whoever they were playing at the time. Bird always made the game interesting.

For someone who they said can’t jump, is slow his passing is unbelievable. His hustle to get the ball. Who today do you see jumping into the stands. Rolling on the floor. For someone who’s not a good jumper he sure pulled down a lot of rebounds. For the athletic players that can do a big slam dunk but the two points they get for it, is it worth anymore on the scoreboard then Larry’s easy dunk. No. If he wasn’t such an unselfish team player could he have scored 35 or 40 points a game? I think so. It’s a team sport. These days all they care about is being the BIG star. I’ll take Larry Bird over any of them. Of course it’s JMO

Best passers or at least assists would be Magic and John Stockton. I think Stockton broke Magic's assist record. Bird is great though and passing is something people sometimes fail to realize about Bird. He was every bit as good as Magic when it comes to passing. He just didn't get as many assists as Magic because everyone on the Celtics were pretty good passers and made the extra pass to get the easier shot.

Bird had a wicked sense of humor. During one game Larry was yelling at McHale, saying "Go ahead, do like you said you were going to do. Kick Elvin Hayes ass." Then Robert Parish got in on it and Elvin was about to throw down on Kevin. Larry got it calmed down eventually. Elvin Hayes, Connie Hawkins, Elgin Baylor, Bobby Jones, Bob Horry ( Big-Shot Bob; won a handful of championship rings. Made some clutch shots -thus the name- during the playoffs. ) are just some of the names of great players who would be able to play today's NBA. Many more I will think of. These are men I watched play. Others, like Bob Cousy and Tommy Heinson are fun to watch now. They were great during their hayday. The NBA has a rich history. It almost didn't survive the early '70s due to drug abuse, violence on and off the floor and other factors. That's when Larry and Magic popped up and out onto championships to be won. Turned the whole league around. History.
I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks. I'll be in touch.

Here's the difference between Larry and Magic. Magic brought the ball down, he handled the ball FAR more than Larry, which gave him far more opportunities. So, overall Magic, of course, had more passes. But, at his position, and NOT handling the ball as much as Magic, it's easy to say he's very much the best passer ever!

  • @SteveGellerMusic
    @SteveGellerMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    1. I don't know if it would have been fun playing with Bird. You have to be ready to catch a pass at any time, anywhere in the front court, including when it doesn't seem like.a pass is even possible. You then have to catch the pass flawlessly and make the shot, or you know he's going to yell at you. He's the greatest trash talker of all time, so when he starts chewing you out at practice for missing that one layup 2 weeks earlier, you're now in a living nightmare. The Celtics around Bird had to train themselves very persistently to just be able to keep up with him. It's only fun if you can play well enough.
    2. "Good 11" is about right. Bird played 13 seasons, but he missed most of 1989 and then periods of time in his last 3 seasons (90, 91, 92). Even when he played in those 3 seasons, he couldn't sit on the bench because his back was in so much pain, and he could barely run up and down the court.
    3. Heinsohn said "Bird has to lead the league in assists while on the ground," because of how many times he would dive for balls and then find cutters for layups. Bird never led the league in assists, though he probably led all forwards nearly all the time.
    4. Bird is a better passer than LeBron, even as good as LeBron is as a facilitator. One would have to look to point guards to find anyone as good as Bird. Magic, Stockton, Steve Nash, Chris Paul...
    5. One of the "Making the Case" or similar videos, which rates Bird alongside the other greats, emphasizes that his full-court outlet passes are the best of any player in history. There's no one else that made an art out of 80-foot passes for layups on a regular basis.

To hell with all those so-called GOATS. When you talk about the greatest players of all time it's more than just how many points they score no matter how pretty the shots are, it's also about being a floor general.
