      Work day meal
Breakfast: tramezzino (small sandwich, the italian version of a salty breakfast), nuts (walnuts during fall, toasted hazelnuts during spring), espresso
Lunch: meat or fish (no fried stuff) with light salad (lettuce and tomatoes), freshly baked bread, espresso
Snack: fresh fruit (apples are my top choice)
Dinner (i might just skip this if I had a bigger lunch): salad, cheese, lean cold cuts like prosciutto/ chicken breast/ bresaola.
Wonder where pasta is? That's a sunday meal with my family.
Wonder where pizza is? I'll take that once or twice a month as a casual night out with friends.
Also swimming pool once or twice a week because eating healthy is good but to stay fit you need physical activities.

I'm Italian and I found several errors in the video, but the two key right takaways are:
    1. Portions matter, we eat generally less;
    2. Un-processed foods are less fattening: vegetables, meat, fish, pasta* are better than processed foods. And we also generally use way less sauces, like ketchup, bbq etc; these were introuced 30 years ago with fast foods.
*pasta is quite easy to abuse too being cheap and calorie dense.
-> Let's look at real situation and no the postcard version: There are rising obesity rates also in Italy, especially in the less wealthy regions, due to processed foods being way cheaper than meat/fish. And... also Italians can get drunk, especially in smaller cities and villages in the countryside were "vine and food festivals" ("sagre") are held, it's common to see peole rolling on grass after many drinks.
Last but not least: how can come to your mind that "People who see food as a pleasure stay thinner than who see food as fuel"? People educated about nutrition tend to eat less and less processed foods. It's pure logic, you wouldn't fuel your car 2 times its capacity, while if the food becomes one of your main pleasures (remember: poorer regions, fatter regions), you'll probably get fat.

      @giovannicolosi5058 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

@@kissme1518 not all fast food is bad but many things are more caloric dense to be both more tasty and easly preservable. And many fast foods are often eaten with caloric dense sausaces (French fries with ketchup & mayo). I don't demonize them and sometimes eat a BK.
Fast food isn't the only factor, just an example of what is more fattening than pasta with italian seasoning (not mac&cheese, never tried that but sounds caloric dense!). But pasta, like every other food, can be fattening too 😁

@@Laurelin70 So the only viable information you gave from that wall of text was ultra-calories, sugars and fat?
Nothing wrong with fat there's tons of that in Italian cuisine, I don't find it anything harmful.
As for calories. You can choose to not eat the whole thing that day just count your calories. Hard to understand? Same with sugars.

    • @Laurelin70
      @Laurelin70 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@kissme1518 Are you so dense? We're talkng about a DIET, i.e. eating HABITS. There's nothing wrong in fast food as long as it's a once in a time experience, it's when it become a habit that it's unhealthy. Italians too eat in fast food, but it's not a habit, even for lunchbreak at work. And anyway, regularly eating out for lunchbreak is a dietary unhealthy habit even for italians, even when you don't eat in a fast food chain, because you can't control how the food is cooked and prepared in restaurants and diners, how much or which kind of oils or fats they use, how much salt, etc.
And about "limit your calories intake": yes, you can do that, but it's not a question of calories, but of nutrients: fast food meals are strongly unbalanced in their nutrients composition (never heard about the Healthy Eating Pyramid? Or the Healthy Plate? every meal shoud mirror that composition), and if you want to just reduce your caloric intake, you have to reduce so much the portions that it ends to be not satiating enough.
In italian cuisine there's tons of fats, but they are usually unsaturated fats (except for butter) that are proven to be healthy (in limited amounts). And younger generations learned to cook with less oil and fats than older generations, because of the better understanding of health issues.

I lived in Italy for two years in the 1980s. My experience was this: For breakfast, Italians just had a coffee and a cornetto or skipped breakfast altogether. However, they had large meals both at lunchtime and dinner time. In fact, lunch and dinner menus were practically the same consisting of two courses, the first course being a big plate of pasta, risotto, or minestrone, and then a second course of meat and some cooked or raw vegetables. Lunch would be at noon, and dinner sometime between 7:00pm-9:00pm. Between the two meals, one would often have a snack, that is some kind of dessert. It was a lot of eating, but surprise, surprise, Italians were as thin then as they are now. The secret to their physical fitness is healthy ingredients in their food and lots and lots of physical activity as simple as walking to work or school and spending a lot of time outdoors.

Times have changed since then, unfortunately......modern life has led us to a more american style of eating: nobody does anymore two complete meals. I used to eat 200-250 gr. of pasta twice per day, now it's twice per week.
None of my friends or relatives eat more than me.
Quick food has substituted the prepared one, and even on Sundays in few houses there's home made food, and, when you do, ingredients have lost their quality
Of course some tradition continues, but, if you come back, you would perceive a different vibe

Cover with a lid for two or three minutes and pour in the canned (or fresh) tomato pieces, season with salt to taste, and cook for 7 or 8 minutes. When the water boils, pour in the pasta and cook as the packet indicates (10 to 12 min.). In pasta dishes, in the breadsticks, in things that don't even require sugar. I think that sugar is the main culprit to the obsesity problem. And I think that these restaurants use sugar to make people get addicted to their food and keep coming back.

Very young and quite old people usually have hot milk (with or without coffee) and biscuits or cereals. People with a little more health awareness might have something like yogurt with fruits or granola/nuts and often drink alternative "milk" (almond/rice/soy milk). People with a very active life, like me, might even have a little "second breakfast" at around 10.30.

It's amazing to see how other cultures treat food differently than here in the USA. The only shock to me is how I've personally changed my diet to the worst since I've lived in the states. I grew up in Venezuela until I was 21 and it was very similar to the italians in the sense that all 3 meals at home were made from scratch, not cans... Everyday. McDonald's was seen as a treat and my parents would take us there once every couple of months. I've lived in the states for 21 years now, so 50-50 and I'm 45lbs heavier than when I moved. most of our meals at home come from a jar or a frozen bag and fast food is so convenient that I eat it if not weekly, pretty close to. This video just opened my eyes. I need to make some changes :)

Usa lost its food culture and heritage with the fast food era.
Before that, their food routine was just as the rest of the world.
I remember an episode of little house on the prairie, where they talked about this phenomenon. It was season 8 "the progress" and explains a lot on what really happened in the us in those period and how people quickly forgot how they were before..
Kellogg's , Kfc, Mc Donald and coca cola buried an entire food tradition.

As an Italian, when I watch this kind of reports about our culture or diet, I sincerely feel two emotions: first, I feel proud to be italian and to be grown in Italy. Second, I ask myself how terrible the U.S. are in regard to food and nutrition (because for the most part this "cultural shock" videos and in general opinions are from Americans). I'm schoked about how all these habits are considered something antiquate and a bit luxourious by Americans. I live in a touristic city and I see that Americans often try to be more italian in style and in behaviour but they can't do it completely. I'm proud to be grown in a country where times and history shaped the habit of a good life. I only hope that all our culture will not be lost due to its commercialization.

Niccolo, after World war 2, America became totally automated, systematized, etc. All the research for making food and military equipment for the war continued by big business selling packaged, processed convenience foods to the modern housewife, along with all the new machines like dishwashers, etc. We were listening to advertising, buying from huge corporations making millions of dollars from processed junk, TV dinners, etc. It was all about consumption. Farms were overtaken by factories and we totally lost touch with our humble earth and fields. It is still that way but now we are trying to "eat locally", etc. I don't know if we'll be successful. Even when we come back from Europe, we go right back to our ways. Why? Big business controls the US. Period.

I lived in Perugia, Italy for six months 30 years ago when I was 20 years old. People were thinner until they reached middle age for the following reasons: 1. Italian portions are 1/3 the size of American portions. I thought I was going to starve when I got there but quickly became used to the meal sizes. 2. At least in the city, everyone walks everywhere. 3. Almost none of the streets are flat. You have to take stairs or walk uphill or downhill anywhere you want to go. It is like doing the Stairmaster or treadmill on incline or decline every day. 4. The stairs are set at an awkward height making you expend more energy. This was to stop invaders from running through the city. 5. Most food is prepared from scratch, so you eat less processed garbage. I don’t know if the people in Perugia are still thin, but when I lived there, they were very attractive with an almost Twilight cast look. Pale skin, thin builds, chiseled facial features. Main reasons from what I could tell: they eat much less and exercise much more as part of their lifestyle.

There is a big big big difference between the Italian cuisine and the US cuisine: sugar. The Italian average consumption of total sugars (including carbs) is less than the US consumption of only added sugars. More than 90% of Italians consume less sugar than the dose per day reccomended by WHO. A high consumption of sucrose increases the production of fat (by turning fructose into fat) and prevents the body from eliminating it, and increase the appetite. So a diet with a lot of sucrose make you more more fat than a diet without sucrose, with the same quantity of calories.
Eat an apple and drink a glass of water (around 20 grams of sugar) instead of drinking a "healthy" juice with 3 apples, 1 orange, 4 strawberries and a carrot (around 90 grams of sugar). Eat a fat rib of beef with a glass of Valpolicella Ripasso (0 grams of sugars) instead of a Big Mag with a Medium Sprite (60 grams of sugar).

I don't know what it is that keeps Italian fit and healthy (enough to make Italy one of the countries with the oldest population in the world, and often their elderly people in their 90s look like they're still in their 60's or 70's), but when you are in Italy you can virtually eat almost everything you like without gaining weight. Maybe it's all that walking, the fresh fruit and vegetables... dunno. But Italians, along with the French people and the Japanese, are for sure onto something.

I’m Italian: this is a good informative video🎉
Only some ( regional ) exceptions: as you said at the initial part of the video, there are different places and traditions , mainly because we was different countries until 1866. In my region, Veneto, we actually drink a bit everyday, but non really so much in quantities ( despite the fame of great drinkers ). I confirm that being in a local completely drunk is not well judged, but “well happy because of alcohol” is ok and seen as “he/she knows his/ her limits”.
At north Italy it was common to eat butter and sugar with bread, but only for people that had to work hard in the morning or children.

That's all about, like you say very well in your video, avoid processed food, processed drinks... one main think in me opinion, t for example the cakes on the Supermarket got two months of fresh validity for consumer, but if you made a cake at home with eggs, sugar, etc. it only stay fresh for 4 days😮, something must ring on our brain?! The process food is full of chimicals, and fat. Every single time i've been in Itália i eat and drink very well, they are so "perfeccionisti" and made things with love, and they love to show us, the food in Portugal are very good too, but the italians doing better, always a step ahead, even the coffee on a coffee shop are something like tasty...not just a regular coffee.

Mate, I've been in Portugal (from Lisbon up to spanish "Costa de la muerte") and I ate wonderfully in there too. Same goes for Spain, Greece, Tunisia, Turkey... Wherever you go around the Mediterranean sea (and Portugal isn't physically on the mediterranean but shares a lot of culture with that too) you are fine :)
We UItalians may have more different plates just because we go from nearly continental climate in the north to nearly african climate in the deep south, but overall the Mediterranean countries (and I include Portugal too) are gold when it comes to food ;)
Only disappointment was to discover that "vino verde" isn't "verde" (green) at all ;) ;)

But after you've lost the weight - great idea to have a sweet treat once in a while - and maybe have pasta or higher carb on weekends? ps: I have discovered it also helps living at a higher altitude. Very good description, but in the south from Napoli and down, you start EVERY meal with spaghetti pomodoro or with the sauce from the "Spezzantino" (Pieces of lamb slowcooked in tomato sauce). Then you eat the meat, again just a few little pieces, with bread and some vegetable side dishes. If you're lucky enough to have peasant relatives you round it off with salami, olives in different styles, some pieces of pecorino and provolone. You wash it all down with red wine mixed with Gazzosa 🤤 At least they eat like this in my family in the mountains of Calabria. Now I live in a cold northern european country and vegetables sold here are all grown in dutch greenhouses and lacks the nutritional value of vegetables cultivated and consumed in the sun of Calabria.

I found your video now and as a Roman I feel to say a few things 😅
I'm 1,62 cm for 53kg and I never skip a meal, never. Skipping breakfast is very wrong and not he right way to loose weight. Breakfast the most important meal of the day and it's important to have coffee with soy or oat milk or a cappuccino with cereals/a small pastry, yougurt and fruit. it's not so true that italians or romans drink just coffee, most of us has a proper real breakfast.
It's true that we never use butter in Rome, they use it A LOT in north of Italy for example and it's not healthy at all, we use mostly extra virgin olive oil which is the best you can find.
We care a lot about buying and consuming organic vegetables, we've plenty of fresh markets to buy all fresh vegetables, fish and meat.
Fish is also a big part of the diet, very light and healthy and lots of italian don't eat a lot of red meat or pork.
We don't eat processed or OGM food in general as we can find much better options at very good price.
We don't drink coke or pepsi or this kind of drinks on a regular base, we drink water and a glass of wine eating out or with an aperitiveoatly during weekends.
Also gym and exercise is huge in Rome and everyone is into some kind of physical activity.
Portions for us are quite small and we never put an exaggerated amount of food in our plates.
Also me and a lot of other people now are having dinner earlier, around 7/7.30 pm to stay without eating for 12 or more hours which is great for your metabolism.
For all this reasons I think you don't see a lot of obese people in Italy.
Mediterranean diet is the best anyway but exercise is fundamental.

Well i can't say in the history Italians was exactly peacefull... The roman empire, endless war between cities during middle ages, the 2 world wars. But one thing is pretty clear... after the Roman Empire lucky period we totally suck at war :D

I'm following the Mediterranean ketogenic diet (very low carb) for health reasons. I love Mediterranean food now, even avocados which aren't actually from there. You have some interesting advice in this video. 👍

Then eat bacon and cook with lard. Pork was always the staple meat in Italy. Bolognese and N'duja.
The Mediterranean Diet of today is all marketing.

This is definitely one of my favorite videos from you. The way you've described Italian habits plus the memes
Especially the Apple bite cracked me up! Although I'm not fat but sure a cup of cappuccino as breakfast sounds like a deal!

Northern eastern italians do love their alcohol, in Veneto and Friuli, and they do drink a lot. With style, of course... you can drink as much as you can, but you should never look drunk; if you do, you drank too much and you make a "brutta figura"

A LOT depends from where you are and which social class you're meeting. I guarantee you (as Italian) that it's not always like that...
