I would like to make the argument that the Giant Frox in the depths are TotK's stand-in for the Dodongos. They are giant reptile-creatures with a suck attack that you can throw bombs in to attack their weak points.
I thought so too when I first saw them do their inhale attack.

Probably why Dodongos have been downgraded from enemies to farm animals.

For anyone wondering those creatures in the middle of the thumbnail are called don dons and are not hostile. Tip: if you feed them luminous stones and wait by a campfire, they will excrete gems for you to collect. You can find them hidden in the faron region of Hyrule in Totk.

@@andrewmiller5126 They're similar to Dodongos in name in the German dub, and presumably in some others, so it does seem that Nintendo went for a "peaceful Dodongo variant" with them. By the way, did you know that HailToDodongo is actually a big name in the BotW modding scene?

Seeing as how ToTK has both the two different timelines tunics im going to say that the frox AND the dondons are both evolutions of the dodongos, one from each timeline.

It's one of the dialogues from Malanya if you sleep in the Malanya bed.
I'd consider them somewhat of a missing link. Visually, they definitely do call back to Dodongos, and them eating rocks somewhat is as well, but they're definitely mammals as far as we can tell, more bovine. They're a branch of Dodongo that have evolved into mammals and from there into horses, at least the ones in BotWs time, or have been crossbred with horses in the past

I don't think Dondons are Dodongos. You also missed those in Twilight Princess as well as the baby and regular size Dodongos in Ocarina of Time.

I think they're like the "pre-evlolution" If that makes sense. Because if you play TOTK on german, the dondons are called: "Dongo"

It’s so sad that king dodongo willingly jumped into the lava to rid himself of link forever. But I know what he went through. My mom always used to poke me in the throat when I would yawn and I would blow up and start rolling around. I’m glad we didn’t have a lava pit at home

Sure, they have the same gimmick, but they’re not the same species. Dodongos are closely related to dinosaurs while Froxes are more related to frogs.

@@e.d.gproductions7989Dondons are actually said in game to have evolved from "a bigger, more agressive creature". As you may know, there's a 10000 year gap between most zelda games and Botw and Totk, so it makes sense for them to have evolved from dodongos.

@@losalphaenterprises I dont think they are Dodongo because they are newly discovered. There is no record or anything about them in Hyrule or any indication that they used to harm people. They are quite a peaceful creature that eats luminous stones and poops gems and also Malanya stated that they are in fact the ancestors of horses which is why they are easily scared like an animal. Also I dont think I read anything in the game that Dondons are related to Dodongos only Malanya gave me a brief history about them.

In the german version they are called dongos, pretty close. Why the english version refused to call them that I don't know.
