I think he was mixing up half of this stuff with Star Trek. Maybe that is why he was so baffled by the fact earth didn't exist in Star Wars and that he thought Kansas or Iowa(where kirk is actually from) was involved.
This actually makes sense. And considering how on the recent Off topic Gavin said that this happened before he had seen all the movies gives some credit to this theory.

Funny thing is Earth is technically in the universe of star wars, you see this ancient race of aliens came to earth took a good chunk of the local humans with them and bred them for slave labour. But when said aliens had their connection to the force ripped away from them, their slaves including the humans led a massive scale revolution and overthrew them.
Crazy thing is, Gavin's actually really smart about a LOT of things. He's just extraordinarily stupid when it comes to some of the most common sense stuff. Like how Star Wars is in a totally different galaxy and a long ass time ago.

Just for clarity, they're humans but not from Earth. All the humans are from the planet Coruscant; and since Coruscant was the location of the Galactic Senate, and a major trade hub, humanity spread across the galaxy faster than other races.
Actually they never specifically say where humans are from, and while Coruscant is definitely a hub, it is not a home planet for humans, especially when there’s evidence that Coruscant was enhabited by aliens before humans arrived. At least in expanded universe.
