  • The Battle of the Bulge was the bloodiest single battle fought by the United States in World War II. In today's educational animated cartoon we look at one of the most brutal battles of World War II, Germany's last major offensive before loosing the war, The Battle of the Bulge. Could the military have done something different? We know it's the year 2019 and we look at it differently, but let's analyze this war in today's episode - The Battle of the Bulge

My grandfather fought in this battle. He was part of Patton's 3rd army and was in a tank destroyer. He was the person who aimed the tank destroyer's turret and also manned the machine gun. He told my dad about a time where he was checking a destroyed German tank and saw the charred bodies of young Germans.

My grandfather was in the first infantry division, of the US army during the battle. At some point during the battle, he actually caught German artillery that badly damaged both of his legs, and the pain was excruciating enough to make him pass out, but it was the extremely bitter cold weather than actually kept him alive, because his wounds actually froze shut. He was missing in action for three days as a result of this, it was only after they started looking at those alive and those who weren’t after the battle ended in that section that they discovered him. He ended up spending nine months in a military hospital in the United Kingdom, and then another year and a half at one in Texas. I actually still have the letters that were sent from the department of war at the time, to his mother. And the letter that stated he was found and badly injured. He ended up finding his wife (my grandmother) while he was hitchhiking home, and they were married for for a little over 50 years before she died, with my grandfather finally passing at 90 in 2016.

My father-in-law fought in the Battle of Bulge. It was traumatizing for him, that he only spoke about a few times. He passed away in 2021 at 96 years old. He had quit school at 12 years old during the Great Depression to work and to help feed his family. Returned from the war and spent 6 months in a VA hospital. Then went to work and attended college classes on the GI bill. Became a very successful businessman! We have always been so very proud of him! My husband is an only child and it’s been really hard for him. We have my father-in-law’s medals. Truly, the greatest generation! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

This story best told in the Longest Winter by Alex Kershaw in amazing detail of Lyle Bouck and his 17 other soldiers who bravely kept the Germans at bay giving the Americans enough time to reach a safe line of defense. They spent the rest of the war in POW camps starving to death and disfigured from their wounds. America only recognized them 30 whole years later with no one. receiving the Medal of Honor. These men deserved more than this.

At the battle of Lanzarath, the I&R platoon was in the woods across from the village. They were trying to remain hidden but a little girl in the village ran out and stopped the passing Germans and was seen pointing in the direction of the Americans. That's how the Germans found them. Amazingly, no American was killed. They held the Germans up all day before being captured. That night while being captured , Lt. Bouck turned 21 years old. For their heroism, they became the most decorated platoon of WW2. I HIGHLY recommend reading "The Longest Winter", It is their story.

My grandfather served in WW2 in the western front. He wasn't there on D-Day, but he got there around Operation Cobra. Then a Panzerschrek (if thats how you spell it) blew up the half-track he was riding in and was the only serviver. He was hospitalized in France for a week and was about to be honerably discharged, but he refused and was redeployed a day before the battle of the bulge. And fought in the battle of the bulge in Belgium. And fought some more in Germany and earned a Purple Heart, and a Medal of Honor ( I still have those). He sold his M1 Garand and german SMGs to a muesam during the 60's (dum move bro). He and his 4 brothers all came home. He was in the Army with Patton as his General.
