5'5 was considered short back then?! I'm 5'5 and when I served in the Marine Corp there were guys smaller than me. They turned out to be the bravest Marines out there. It was almost like the smaller guys felt like they had something to prove.

That being said, once you get out you'll want to go back again. I can't explain why this is but it happens with almost every Marine I've ever talked to including myself. You're still young so I'd suggest you really think long and hard about it. You have to remember once you're in, they own you. You are government property for how many years you serve. Talk to some Marines if you can but talk to someone who won't bullshit you. Don't rely on recruiters to tell you the truth. They will do anything to get you in, including blatantly lie. Also don't rely on youtube videos to show you how it really is. Videos available to the public usually water down the reality. I know I sound like I'm discouraging you from joining but I'm trying to let you know now that this is a life changing decision and there's no backing out of it. You can't just say, "I don't want to do this anymore. I'm going home." You are there to stay. All that being said, if I had to do it over again, I definitely would.
During filming of the movie about his military career when the special effects explosions went off he had flashbacks and jumped on the actors playing his men and also jumped on a prop grenade. They made it feel so real it literally sent his mind right back and he did things during filming that would have earned him another medal of honor.

Though this same certifiably badass dude said his favorite memory of WWII was being on R&R in the South of France when he found out the war was OVER! It shows he was far more than just a real life killing machine!
What the video doesn't mention is after the war Audie had such a bad case of PTSD that he had held his wife at gunpoint, and ended up with a dependence on sleeping medication. Due to his voicing of the problem in the 1970's, the VA started taking PTSD seriously. It took that long for vets to actually get taken seriously regarding trauma.
Audie Murphy didn't hold his wife at gunpoint. He locked himself in a hotel room to break his addiction to the medication the VA gave him. He died in a plane crash in 1971, so he didn't speak out about PTSD in the seventies. He testified before congress about PTSD in the sixties.
Actually, Audie Murphy did not leave the U.S. Army altogether at the end of WWII. He was discharged from Active Duty after WWII. After that war, he joined the Texas National Guard and drilled with them (when he wasn't making movies) until he retired in 1968 at the rank of Major.
No mention of his suffering from PTSD and involvment in funding treatment for it? He always lamented that the sounds of artillery fire was ever-present in his mind, particularly in his dreams and wanted to help fellow vets suffering from it. This is also an heroic thing he did and deserves the same recognition as his acomplishments in the field.
He bringing soldiers' PTSD is prolly the bravest thing he has ever done (and that is even taking into account he had an encyclopedia volume's worth of brave acts)! Rest In Power Mr. Murphy! 💪👍🍻

He died in a plane crash in 1971, so he didn't speak out about PTSD in the seventies. He testified before congress about PTSD in the sixties.

Actually, Audie Murphy did not leave the U.S. Army altogether at the end of WWII. He was discharged from Active Duty after WWII. After that war, he joined the Texas National Guard and drilled with them (when he wasn't making movies) until he retired in 1968 at the rank of Major.

No mention of his suffering from PTSD and involvment in funding treatment for it? He always lamented that the sounds of artillery fire was ever-present in his mind, particularly in his dreams and wanted to help fellow vets suffering from it. This is also an heroic thing he did and deserves the same recognition as his acomplishments in the field.
He fought off PTSD with the same strength he showed on the battlefield.
He bringing soldiers' PTSD is prolly the bravest thing he has ever done (and that is even taking into account he had an encyclopedia volume's worth of brave acts)! Rest In Power Mr. Murphy! 💪👍🍻
