  • Learn to use extractive distillation column scheme in Aspen HYSYS for the separation of acetone and water mixture, using 3-methylhexane as solvent. The extractive distillation column helps in saving energy, as required during the traditional distillation scheme. Please do watch, like, and share the video, and subscribe the channel "AspenTech Channel".
    The problem statement is given below:
    A feed mixture consisting of 50 wt. % acetone, and 50 wt. % water is fed to the extractive distillation column at 25 °C and 1 bar, at a flowrate of 100 kg/h. A solvent consisting of 1 mole % 3-methylhexane is fed to the extractive distillation column at 30 °C, and 1 bar, at a flowrate of 150 kg/h.
    Pure water is obtained from bottom the tower. This column has 10 stages, with condenser and reboiler pressures as 1 bar. The top product from this column is sent to the 2nd column (solvent recovery column), where further separation takes place, 99 mole% pure acetone is obtained from top (vapor), and solvent is recovered from the bottom. This column has 50 stages, with feed entering at 25th stage. The condenser and reboiler pressures are 1 bar. The reflux ratio of this column is 1.2. The solvent is recycled back to the 1st column using recycle tool, after cooling down to 30 °C and 1 bar.

    Great vid. Could you do an exercise on heterogeneous azeotropic distillation?

    Thanks for video, sir. Sir, if I want to sizing extraction distillation column, is it the same way with step in lecture #21? Thanks in advance

    How I determine the number of stages of an extractive distillation column to dehydrate ethanol using ethylene glycol as solvent manually?

    Hi Sir, thakns for the very instructive videos.
    I have a question for you, when using a recycle loop why did you linked its outlet with the first solvent stream instead of creating its own new outlet and mix it through the mixer with the initial solvent of 150 kg/h ?

    I tried this but my recycle stream doesn't converge. The error given by hysys is that pressure reversal was detected in the main tower

    helpful. Can we use shortcut distillation to get an initial estimate for the number of stages for the rigorous simulation of the extractor?

      Yes. We can use it as well.

    How do you know how much solvent to use for liquid liquid extraction?

    • @aspenchemchannel
      @aspenchemchannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually, at first, we use the same flowrate as that of the feed. Then using case-study tool, we can optimize the use of solvent to achieve required purity.
