Cherry for me; perfect mix of bark and tone, with that slight ring that lands in the sweet spot. Just spanks 🤙🤙

I got my 13x7 w/ black hardware a week ago and maaaan i couldn't have picked better. Awesome ring from the brass shell and the gunshot crack from the diecast hoop. I play metal and this snare just fits perfectly. My setup is: Evans hybrid head on top (lug freq. about 335 Hz according to tunebot) and Evans hazy 300 on the bottom (lug freq. 400 Hz), Puresound Custom 30 snare wires, rather tight. Just an awesome combo

From the woods I dig the cherries. The brass I’d say the 13x7 either hoops. Side note, I was easily distracted by the sound of the kick drum too…sounded great in every mix. Thanks DCP crew for the detailed look and listen!

Disclaimer: I listened on my phone, without headphones, and in the bathtub. But in this very bad environment, I liked the black 14 x 6.5 best. For the wood I'm torn because I like the look of the walnut, but the sound of the mahogany better. But I like the look of the mahogany the least, by far. Oh, the struggles in buying a snare.

On the Wood side, I gotta go with the Walnut. It sounded the most "alive" to me. On the Brass side, I enjoyed both 14x6.5's and the 13x7 with the black hardware and die-cast hoops. They had the best combination of ring, tone, and sensitivity. Generally speaking, my favorite snares from all brands are usually brass 14x6.5's. You almost can't go wrong there.

Never been a fan of Ludwig wood snares, other brands do it (much) better and even in this demo there is no exception. As far as metal snares though, they are by far among the best. My fav are all the chrome/brass in all sizes. Really excellent for the price. And you are the best testers on the market! Keep going!!!

I liked them all! So much of a difference is made simply through different hoops. I loved all the wood snares, glad to see Ludwig offering different woods to fill out their lineup. The beech and walnut have such distinct and dissimilar voices; and such gorgeous graining. The finishes are superb!

The high tuned brass w/ diecast in both 14x6.5 and 13x7 sounded really
Good. I personally lean more towards the 13 for that extra pop/crack, but that 14 would work for 90% of any music.

My personal Wood Favorit it's Walnut. From Brass section I like 13*7 black hoops. But 14*6,5 white hoops very nice too. Thank's for your job! I have seen most of your videos, although I live far from the US and cannot buy drums from you, you help me understand what I need. You do a good and necessary job.

Wow! exciting new line of Ludwig snares that look as good as they sound. Loved all the wood drums, video provides a good comparison of the tonal qualities associated with each wood in addition to showcasing the drum. Sounds like there is a snare for every style and personality. You want to rock out, get the cherry. If you like being articulate, go for the beech. Fat and funky is what mahogany gives you. Dark and mysterious drummers might want to try the walnut. Only problem is going to be deciding. Or buying all 4. Thanks for the video.

My favorite was the universal......haha 😄 Actually love the idea here much like the SLP from Tama that you mentioned. My least favorite was actually the mahogany, which must be why I didn't keep a reissued ludwig jazzfest snare. I liked the cherry the best for wood models and the black over chrome. In the end, I have a 1970s Ludwig black galaxy sparkle acrolite that is still my least expensive and absolute best sounding snare. Nice review!

How does the brass shell differ from the NOB Super and Black Beauty shells - thickness, bearing edges, how it was made, etc.?
Too bad there isn't an 8-lug version. I thought the 8-lug NOB Super sounded better than the 10-lug.

All the woods sound and look great, and I totally love tube lugs, well, everywhere. Great to see Ludwig staying competitive, and supplying drums for "most" drummers budgets ! They do know how it is done. Not sure if I can differentiate the woods too well, which may be because they are just veneers. I would probably pick the look I like most ?

14x5.5 Brass with the black die cast hoops is the one for me. That middling snare drum depth of 5.5-6" is my favourite and I'm surprised Ludwig doesn't make more drums of that size range. For that reason, I'd probably take this drum over any Black Beauty or COB. Is there any difference between this snare and the Black Magic?

  • @tomstewartdrums

I own the Ludwig Walnut….really digging it, still experimenting with low tuning on it to get it where I want…it sounds amazing on this demo tuned low fully miced up…. my question is, at that low tuning, on all of the wood snares actually, was the reso head cranked or tuned medium or lower? Also snare wires… tight or on the loose side in these demo tunings? Thanks for the great videos👍

It's obvious that Ludwig is going all in with so many models and configurations to choose from. Consider the alternate takes on their Black Beauty offered in 8 version here (different diameters, depths and hardware, including what looks like die cast hoops on some). It probably spells the end of their Black Magic copy of their own drum, but I believe these are all made in Taiwan. The brass shells are not seamless; you can find the weld when looking through the bottom (reso) head. The finish is first rate, though. The heads, not so much (noticeably uneven spray and even a glob or two of the coating was noticed). A clerk at the store told me the box was almost exactly the same as the one they got a Pork Pie snare in (also black chrome over brass with tube lugs - the "BOB" copy of a Black Beauty). He believes they come from the same manufacturer in Taiwan and are made to the specs of each company whose badge appears on them. All that said, if you want the real deal, you're going to pay handsomely for it. These are Ludwig's own knockoffs, though they probably have a successful combination of value for the money. Tempting, but only the original can truly boast its own heritage. I'm holding out.

Disclaimers: guitarist here, listening on an iPhone. That said, liked high-tuned cherry and mahogany-good thwack that could sit well in a mix, with very controlled overtones that don’t sound like I’m hitting a basketball with a white oak dingy oar.

13x7 Black hardware. They’re all great. But the best to my ears was the 13” die cast version. Controlled with depth. My most favorite snare I owned (out of many…) was a 13x7 OCDP maple snare from GC. Paid $109 with GC employee discount. Used a clear black dot Remo head. Man. That thing was the biz! That’s the only die cast snare I’ve ever owned. This video reminded me that I love die cast. Uffff. But I didn’t like the way that OCDP looked. 😆 red sparkle with black die cast hdwr. Sounded and felt amazing. Well, I need to order some die cast hoops off drum foundry!
