I liked the Nnormal Kjerag and reviewed that shoe awhile back, but after trying the Tomir, I'd say THIS is the Nnormal shoe to get. It's beefier, built like a tank and ready to take on everything the Kjerag tackles but in a more forgiving package. What do YOU think?

I have had these for 4 months now… love them. They really are what NNORMAL markets them as- an all around for almost everything shoe that is tougher than metal nuts. Running, hiking, scrambling, ironically. I’m liking these like a hobbit likes the ring- one to rule them all!
I have the Tomir and this is my "go to" shoe. I am a heavy runner and so shoes are important to me. I have tried many (MANY) shoes from Hoka, La Sportiva, New Balance, Salomon, Adidas..etc. I have been consistently disappointed by the large brands - while they give an initial nice feel, the shoes tend to tear where you don't expect them and also lose that initial comfort over time. I was skeptical about the Tomir when i first bought it - I did it out of support for the brand. They felt a bit hard and just..strange. Two runs later, however, I can say that this is the show I feel most confident in on the trails and has become (magically) so comfortable...increasingly so with every run. No wear / tear so far - after about 300 km in them (on very rocky trails..)

I am a bit frustrated about Ginger Runners opinion about the Kjerag 😅 I so love these Shoes, they are just amazing! Durable, stable enough for technical downhills, great grip, and the midsole!! Bouncy and comfortable but still fast. Its the best midsole I think I ever had in a trail shoe. And no, i am not by any means an elite runner. Give the shoe the love it deserves please 🎉☺️
I agree, I also like the Kjerag more than Tomir.
I have both and I find both much narrower than all the other trail shoes I have (and I have 32 pairs!). They feel way too tight, and far less comfy. Maybe I should size up?

I just bought a pair today. I am super excited about this. I put them on and wanted to start running immediately. And they look amazing.
I agree there's definitely a break-in period; first 30 miles the upper felt stiff as well as the midsole. Now that I have about 50 miles in them the upper feels more pliable and the midsole feels just right. They seem to get better with every run and I find myself reaching for them more and more.
I ran in them last winter in Montana and no issues. Great on the ice and snow.
Have a pair of Tomirs myself and I absolutely love them! Very responsive and durable shoe. Feels like a racer without being uncomfortable.
Have you used them in temps lower than 40 degrees? Picked my Tomir's up at Seven Hills and went for my first run in them last November in Leavenworth on same trail I had run just a month prior in Dynafit Alpine. The temps were just above freezing, and they felt and sound like running in wooden clogs. The Vibram soles really let me down on downhill steep rock with no traction where the Dynafit stuck like glue. I put them away after a couple more runs and brought them back out when the temps were higher, and they performed much better. I now have 150 miles on them and love them when the temps are above 45 degrees. I've spoken to others in the PNW and they have also mentioned that the lugs are really hard.

If they had a wider base and fit, I think I'd invest in a pair, but I know in their current form, my feet are gonna dislike them. Great review as always, considering how long they're expect to last and their sustainability, I agree that $165 isn't crazy.
I have 300k or just shy of 200 miles in the Tomir. I ran a 30k trail race straight out of the box on these. I ran a trail marathon on them last weekend. I am enjoying the Tomir a lot.
The outsole is the star of the show. It's super grippy. The midsole to me is not plush, but its enough to be comfortable on long distances. I do have gripes, two mostly. Gripe one are the laces. They are stupid long. Gripe 2 is the lock-down around the ankle. There are no extra eyelets so there's no way to get a better fit. I've tended to slide forward in the shoes on steep descents.
The upper is fine. It's a little stiff, but not annoying so. The shoe is a little wider than we tend to prefer in Europe. Ethan will call them narrow, from a European perspective it's certainly not.
I am certainly running the ultra season in these. They've been really dependable which is basically the most important element in a shoe.
I agree that the upper is stiff and compare to Salomon Pulsar SG both Tomir and Kjerag are wide shoes.
I agree on the lockdown. I could not get these to fit well, felt really sloppy. I went for the Kjerag instead as I like minimal shoes and they fit me so well. Still plenty of width upfront too.
Love these shoes. Did a review of them after they just came out. One thing you didn’t mention is that in my view the Tomir sizes big whereas the Kjerag is more TTS. Otherwise I agree with what you said. Build is good and grip is excellent. Worth the money if you do a $/km calculation
Love these shoes, have few hundred km on them, raced in these 10 days ago around Annecy. 10/10 would recommend.
I don't have the Tomir but I have the Kjerag, and I can't really say they're narrow, if anything the box is quite roomy for my average width feet in my usual US9.5 (I do think they run long, would like to try a US9, to check the difference). Would love to see a Tomir with a Kjerag midsole material instead. It's quite amazing how much cushioning you get out of barely 2cms of stack, but at the end of a 50K, feet started to feel tired. After close to 300K by now, there's 0 sign of the midsole compressing.
I agree that Tomir is a tractor and Kjerag a sports car. I’ve got both of them and I just did a 50mile race in Kjerag and was happy with my choice of the day.
Grip and durability is really good in both shoes. Tomir has bigger lugs that works better in really rough conditions but I’ve also run in Kjerag on snowy trails.
The upper is thicker on Tomir and really sturdy. Cushioning is enough but not too soft like a Speedgoat for instance. Maybe they are a good comparison to Mafate.
What about the fit and sizing? Do you have both shoes in same size? Is the fit same or is one model wider than the other?
Runned about 30 km, of quite technical footpath in dolomites, once under the rain and... the sole is amazing, I've never slip on rocs muds etc. compared to the Speedgoat 5, the Tomir are veeeeeery better. The main drowback is the laces and the confort, compared to Hoka Speedgoat or Mafate it is difficult if not impossible to fasten them as I want. I have always the feeling to loose them.
I was so eager to LOVE this shoe. Big fan of Kilian's approach to sustainability.
Ordered them and couldn't fit them at all. (and this was the first shoe ever I had this problem)
They are soooo narrow! I order them 1/2 down to normal running shoes (following other review's advice): they still were too long but already too slim. I'm so sad!
Found a good discount on your trail running shoe of the year '23 and will be going with that one!
Good and interesting review as always, but for me the Tomir pales in comparison to the much superior Kjerag.
The Tomir is too boxy, rigid and cumbersome. My feet move a lot inside and its really hard to get a foot hugging fit with the somewhat gimmicky diagonal lacing system.
Whereas the Kjerag was an absolute revelation in that I tried them on and they immediately felt so comfortable and so so so light. The grip and ride is so good; glove-like, its like what I wanted the Salomon S-lab Ultras (mk 2) to be like.
I've spent the last 5 or 6 years wearing pretty much exclusively La Sportiva Mutants so I ould have thought that the robust Tomir would have appealed to me more, but the Kjerag is hands-down my go-to show now.
The toe guard on mine started to unglue in less then 40 miles other then that they have been great just as you described!!
Great stuff. Your video makes me want to try them. If I'm sort of in between 11/11.5 do you think I should size up? I know you mentioned that run a bit narrow. Thanks for any info!
I would easy pay more 20 bucks for any Hoka if they would last as much as the NNormals last. Its actually a much cheaper shoe because of that.
I agree completely with the assessment. They take awhile to break in, BUT when they do….oh boy they are fun. I’ve run up and down Sanitas in Boulder with them without a slip on any surface- dry, wet, mix conditions. Super impressed. I have a pair of Kjerags so completely understand why these are more approachable, BUT they serve a purpose in my quiver as well. I love that model for feeling like I’m running in nothing at all. Closest to bare-foot running I’ll ever get. It forces me to be more precise- running form etc. Anyway, the Tomir is a beast, and they completely undersold it. The only thing I would change is the lug pattern, it’s a little too much “hiking” inspired for me. With that being said, they’d prob make a great hike thru shoe. 😊
And one difference not mentioned is that Tomir has a (thick & high) insole while Kjerag has no insole at all.
Would you say the "hurt" your feet before they broke in? Or just felt a little stiff. I have an upcoming trip and don't know if I would have time to break them in. Thanks for any info @tommilam6320
They didn’t “hurt” my feet but the material did feel stiff. Socks play a role I would say too. I can’t wear thick socks with them due to narrow forefoot. Kjerags never bothered me at all. I would feel better if they were broken in, or take 2 pairs if you can JIC….so you have a back up if they start to bother you.

I have reasonably wide feet and these feel great to me. I like them a lot. I have both NNormal models and they each excel on different terrain.
Both are hard to clean.
They also now will resolve this shoe, which is awesome!
Sometimes I find it bothersome that reviewers will state narrow as a negative. As a runner with a narrow foot all these shoes that you applaud for being wide don't work for me at all. Sometimes I buy a shoe that reviewers love and the islets are almost touching each other because it's too damn wide.
I’ve started using women’s shoes for this reason! Most reviewers warn about a shoe being too narrow, but usually don’t mention if a shoe is too wide.

Tomir is definitely for normal people . I purchased few months back. You need to pick half size down from your regular shoe size .
The most outstanding feature is the vibram outsole . This is probably the best outsole grip for mountain/jungle trail runs . It feels way better than the salomon speedcross series .
The vibram compound & lug design is better than the vibram outsole used in speedgoat 5 . You do feel more secure using it at technical terrains .
I feel kind of regret for not using the Tomir at my recent trail rain events. I choose speedgoat 5 due to its wider toebox and less firm than the tomir .
Which size of Tomir and Kjerag did you have compared to Salomon shoes?

I keep seeing people say the Tomir are wide but you disagree. I wonder what they mean by wide? I float between D and 2E depending on make/model and am wondering if these could work

I just tried on a pair, and didn't buy due to a sort of pinch point right at the front of the laces when the shoe flexes; for those that have tried the shoe, is this something that works out after the break-in period? I really like what Nnormal represents and would love to use their shoe(s) if I can get them to work with my feet.

How does the grip perform on slick hard surfaces? My running route crosses lots of slimy/ smooth ocean rocks exposed by the tide. The grip on my current trail runners is too hard and they are useless/ dangerous on the rocks, while tennis/ stress sneakers grip fairly well with their soft sole.
I'm looking for a shoe that's great on steep gravel, muddy clay slopes, uneven forest terrain, and on slippery ocean rocks.
Is this that shoe?
Excuse i want to ask, can i use Tomir for Road Run because i usually Road Runner and rarely Trail Run.
I just bought some for $80 and im debating taking them back. I actually bought it because the price but they really don't fit very well. I normally wear a 9.5, i tried these in a 9.5, 10 and 10.5. 10 felt too tight and 10.5 feels too big, I want to like them but I just don't know. I purchased for hiking into the Grand Canyon in October just not sure if it is the right choice.

I tired to get them but they do not sell (or maybe even make?) my size.
Can anyone compare this shoe with the TNF Infinite2 when it comes to the midsole and fit on the lateral side on the midfoot?
This shoe saved my 200-mile race when my feet swelled a full size and, at Mile 125, I abandoned the brilliant Hoka Tecton X for the Tomir. They are the most voluminous trail shoe on the market and solid in every respect. Durable and runs light, decent traction, and “balanced” as you say. But a little harsh underfoot unless you ditch the insoles. I swapped out the NNormal insoles for Inov-8 Boomerang footbeds and that did the trick. Nothing fancy but a good value. The Norda 001 and especially the new 002, however, are even better than the Tomir and worth the extra money.
extra money means almost double price in this case (there are no trail shoe out there that worth 300usd to be honest)

But by way of illustration, my Hokas bottom out quickly. The Norda is bulletproof and as comfortable at 50 miles as at 500. I have gone through 2 pair of Tectons X1s and ground them into dust, whereas my Nordas are like new.

@@JanSuchomel yes they fit. The Tomir runs true to size. So for me, size 11 shoes and size 11 Boomerangs.

I tried it on and one of the overlays on the upper gouged right into the top of my foot. I was actually struck by how UNcomfortable it was on my foot compared to the Kjerag. Has anyone else noticed this? Does it go away?
I agree. The Tomir is one of the most uncomfortable shoes that I've ever owned. It's so rigid and I find the diagonal lacing gimmicky, doesn't really hold my heel in tight.
I have to force myself to wear them to try to break them in more, but I just find myself lacing up my La Sportiva Mutants or the Kjerag (which is an absolute pleasure to run in).
Biggest size is 11.5? Where's the love for us bigger guys?

These are a great everday trainer or hiker. I have this and the Kjerag, i really love the Kjerag, it's my favorite. Either models eats up terrain, they do great.
The Tomir is meant for training, but the Kjerag is meant to race fast. They do cost a little more money, but they seem to be extremely durable, and ahould last far longer than other shoes, which would make them a value in the long run.

I agree that the marketing is off! Minimal v. cushioned isn't the same as elite v. the rest of us. I can sense my unconscious insecure self going "am I the kind of noob that need the plan B shoes?"

I find that Nnormal shoes are way overrated for its cost... There´s a decent shoe if you like stiffer cushion but you can find better shoes for half the price (there´s a spanish brand called Joma with really nice shoes for 50 to 80 euros, try the models Sierra, Kubor or Rase and you´ll be pleasantly surprised...) The price of trail runners and road shoes has inflated completely beyond the reach of most normal people. Absolutely ridiculous.
