Cad Castleberry I was pissed when I found out. He was Cam’s go to target and he made Cam the greatest quarterback in his first 3 seasons until Gettlemen made him a bust
Now its gotta be the Kuechly retirement announcement, but Smitty was the locker room presence that every team wants and you can barely find in todays game. Truth be told I dont think we’ll ever replace him, as a leader or a playmaker, or in toughness
Steve Smith could have had all 11 defenders covering him. The QB could throw the ball in his direction, Steve would figure out a way to catch it, and then he would let everyone know about it afterwards. One hell of a fantastic WR. I loved watching him play. A filthy monster on the field.
Jake Delhomme was a solid QB until he tore his shoulder at the end of his career. People forget he was a good QB for a little while. He should have won the damn Super Bowl but John Kasey's penalty screwed Carolina over.
I'm a die hard falcons fan and Steve Smith is probably my favorite receiver. He was everything I was taught about football. Height disadvantage but made it up by talking trash, making plays, and muscling DB's. 2 memories stood out to me and both were 2013. First one is against New England aka the Ice Up Son game where him and Talib battled but he was manhandling him. The other vs the Saints where he caught a pass in traffic while in mid air stiff arms the guy to the ground then scores. Thing is Roman Harper knocked him on the ground after he scored. He got up, celebrated, then preceded to jack him up by his color
most underrated wr ever. i am a panthers fan, but i can't tell you how many times i seen steve turn smaĺl plays into huge ones. he even made jake delhomme a pro bowl qb. we got to the superbowl bcuz of steve smith alone. top 5 alltime if you ask me. 1. rice 2. moss 3. megatron 4. owens 5. smith
Two Cents * that one play against the Texans in week 2 when he had the whole defense on his back and turned a slant into an 86 yard TD is my favourite example
Steve Smith would be considered a top 10 WR all time if he had played in a pass happy offense his whole career, and especially if he was with a good QB like Manning or Brady. He put up big numbers in a run heavy offense. There's stats out there showing he caught like the highest percentage of his teams targets certain years. He's one of the best pound for pound recievers ever. Great after the catch, great at high pointing the ball.
Steve Smith ABSOLUTELY had the nastiest stiff arm Ive ever seen from a receiver. Even if I were to include Running Backs, it's still top 5 Ive ever seen.
That man's effort and determination was what got me thru some tough times. Football was my only escape, and that little fiery sumbitch showed me week in and week out, that all you gotta do is want it more.
Steve Smith will forever be one of the most underappreciated players in NFL history, even if he does get into the Hall of Fame on his first ballot. His only weakness was that he wasn't 6'5", but that didn't seem to cause him any trouble. He was deadly in every part of the field, but I would take him over the middle over anyone who has ever played. The 2005 playoff game where he singlehandedly destroyed the Bears' defense might have been the best performance ever by a wideout.
Steve Smith is way better than Hines Ward come on! I mean him and Fitzgerald need to be top 5, dont get me wrong Hines Ward was good but Steve Smith did a lot of trash talking that he backed up with his talent! Plus Fitzgerald doesn't need to talk to show why he's one of the best ever to play along with Fitzgerald!
Hines backed up his talk just the same, but Smith assuredly wasn't WAY better than Hines. These are two receivers that could have dropped in either order, Smith had more yards, Hines had more TD's, Smith was faster, Hines was the better blocker (though Smith was the only one on Hines' level in that regard). Flip a coin, easiest way to decide who was better. I'd definitely have Fitz over Hines though,.
Panthers fan here and when we let him walk.... let him walk to Baltimore I knew it was a mistake. Even I had no idea the beating he gave us on the reunion games
@@boongoon92 no Hines stats are objectively worse than smiths and had no seasons which he was better than smith in his best season. You can make the argument he had the better career but he was not the better player.
The baddest man to ever play WR! top 5 all time reciever if you ask me. Just look at the qb's that the other guys in the top 10 had then look at who steve had. Agent 89 forever my favorite player
Talk all the shit about Jake Delomme you want, he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003 and the NFC championship in 2005. That Super Bowl, he threw for 330 yards, 3 tds, no ints. Love Steve Smith, but respect the (so far) most successful Qb in Panther history.
SportsSpeak73 that game you're talking about was the NFC divisional in 2008 against the Cardinals the year they went to the Super Bowl. Was he a great Qb? No. But he's not chopped liver either. Right now, I would take Delomme in his "prime" over Kurt Cousins or Ryan Tannehill.
Stuart3188 but 5 turnovers. no matter how good the defense is that's excessive. Tannehill maybe, but I wouldnt take him over Cousins. Jake was at best an average QB but most years he was below average.
He started off as CB but wasn't good enough according to him. Was too aggressive and too much of a ball hunter he got beat every time by double moves apparently
Steve was way too aggressive to play CB at a time when they kept changing rules to help teams on the offensive side of the ball. Would have had so many flags for PI and for being too aggressive with who he matches up against .
Jake Delhomme gets no respect. Led us to 2 nfc championships and a SB. In his later years he ended up getting hurt a lot and was a bit inconsistent but he wasn’t a terrible QB. He was a franchise QB. You could build around him and win.
He was an above average QB until the injury and the TJ surgery. His accuracy was gone after that and he started to throw picks like crazy. It was sad to watch honestly because you could see Delhomme's confidence dying in his last couple years.
5’9 do you see how many jump balls he goes up for and comes down with. Lmao. Gotta love Steve’s attitude and will power. I loved him on the panthers but I always felt like he should’ve left to play with an elite QB.
Jake Delhomme got trashed this segment the dude was a pro bowler Steve had mediocre qbs but he still a beast. You see this comment that means I didn't see yours.
Muoyrico9 Delhomme was high quality Garbage. Yeah he made a pro bowl but s o had Derek Anderson. His 2004 was actually better than his pro bowl year (2005) statistically.
Yeah that was bizarre. Overall Delhomme didn't have a great career, but during his few peak years when Carolina was in the playoffs constantly, Jake was much better than mediocre.
loved steve smith, wished steelers would of took him back then in the draft. big ben would of got him a ring. loved the way smith played the wr position. he made sure he finish to the ground and run over you till you can't get up. respect from steelernation. i would of copped his jersey asap if he played for my team. #ICEUPSON!!!

Like most of the comments say, easily the most underrated guy in the game. Even at age 37 he's averaging nearly 100 ypg. Just a beast
Ewewewe See top 5 wr all time
The day Gettleman let him walk was the saddest day I ever experienced as a Carolina Panther fan....

Yep, I feel like if we had him for that super bowl run, we would have won it.
Agreed
Steve Smith could have had all 11 defenders covering him. The QB could throw the ball in his direction, Steve would figure out a way to catch it, and then he would let everyone know about it afterwards. One hell of a fantastic WR. I loved watching him play. A filthy monster on the field.
If he had a franchise QB for most of his career, he could be #1 on this list. Rare that talent and determination come together like with Steve Smith.
He did have jack Delhomme. He made a 3 or 4 pro bowls. He was good he just couldn’t stay healthy
Jake Delhomme made a singular Pro Bowl, and even then he was one of the lower QBs in the Pro Bowl. Over his whole career he was a mediocre QB at best
Lathan Starnes If carolina kept him probably could've gotten a ring panthers needed him in 50
Jake Delhomme was a solid QB until he tore his shoulder at the end of his career. People forget he was a good QB for a little while. He should have won the damn Super Bowl but John Kasey's penalty screwed Carolina over.

As a Bears fan I have the utmost respect for Smith. He was the only receiver I ever feared.
Most underrated receiver of all time for sure, idk if you can name 10 guys I'd take over Steve Smith
“Hell, they might put my mama out there now. And imma beat her like a drum too” just different 😭
This guy is number one. So underrated. Easily one of top 10 best wide outs of all time.
the time he caught the game winning touchdown in the playoffs against the rams in double overtime.
You Can't Stop Steve Smith Sr.

Smith has more catches yards and touchdowns...hines has 85 td...smith has 81 plus 6 return td plus a few rushing tds...
As a steelers fan dude Steve Smith is just nasty
He and Torry Holt should switch spots
Steve Smith is a future Hall of Famer I don't care what anyone says
