Portable Air Conditioner Review (HONEST) - The DeLonghi Pinguino

  • Hello everyone this is an honest review of the DeLonghi Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner.
    I bought the DeLonghi Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner in this video from Walmart for $500. I found this air conditioner easy to use, easy to move around and easy to install but that is where the good news ends. The Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner is LOUD and it's cooling performance is mediocre at best. It is rated at 11,500 BTU and for 500 sq ft.
    If you're shopping for a new portable air conditioner I would highly suggest skipping this model. Spending a little bit more money and finding a PAC that is much quieter and has a more powerful cooling capacity if you have a large space such as a living room to cool would be a prudent decision.
    Please let me know in the comments below what air conditioner you have and how it works as I am looking for a new and better one. If you have the DeLonghi Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner and like it I don't believe you so don't waste your time telling me how great it is because you are delusional.

    I just bought this AC and happen to have the same type of windows as you. I bought it from Costco then went to Walmart to buy some "Deluxe Clear Vinyl Covering" and some double sided poster tape. Just like putting plastic on your windows for winter, I then cut a hole for the tube and secured it to the plastic tube with duct tape. Working great so far, I was able to make it air tight by duct taping from both sides.
    I'll have to try wrapping the hose in some sort of insulator, definitely didn't think about that.
    Nice video man.

      Wrapping the hose helps a lot. Bought a new danby unit from Costco this year and the hose comes double insulated...works so much better.

  • @Coecoo
    @Coecoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The actual methods of classifying how big of a space AC units can handle (and how they measure the dB) is rètarded at best. It assumes there are little/no things causing the heat to rise and nigh 100% isolation which isn't realistic in the slightest. Here's a few pointers that might improve your situation if you have this problem again:
    1. Allow for more airflow for the AC. Your pipe "blanket fort" is clearly blocking the intake in some shots.
    2. Elevate the AC on a table and compress the tube leading outside. The less surface area to leak heat the better.
    3. Make sure it's absolutely level when operating. Otherwise, your compressor doesn't work as well and might even break.
    4. Don't bother with internal tapestries, they do absolutely fucking nothing. You have to block the outside with something like cardboard, towels or aluminum foil. Alternatively, buy & put on some fancy protective UV window wrap.
    5. Close off any rooms and even hallways you are not actively in.

      😂 I agree with you 100%. Brilliant tips thank you so much! I can absolutely see elevating it this summer so the exhaust is a straight shot out the window working WAY better. Genius!!

    • @MAMreviews69
      @MAMreviews69  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup totally agree. It's all about blocking the solar load. My house is super old and the insulation is garbage. You bang on, pick a room to make livable and sacrifice the rest. This year I'm going to make tinfoil/cardboard sunshades for the heat of the day. Thank you for the insightful comment!! This is going to not only help me but anyone else who reads it. Cheers for this!!!

    Greetings from Europe1 Two tricks on top of some already very useful comments:
    1) Do not underspec with an AC for your room. If your room has a specific area, you should get an AC unit made for at least that area, preferably more. AC unit performance decreases non-linearly with room size if they are underspecced.
    2) For your room configuration, you can get a window sealing kit for little more than a tenner. Rather than spending hundreds of dollars on a slightly more efficient AC unit, the biggest savings can be made by applying them to windows of the rooms you'll be using your AC unit in. All except the hook and loop tape can be removed on a day-to-day basis.

    • @MAMreviews69
      @MAMreviews69  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very intelligent thing to do with the pipe insulation and in my opinion an absolute necessity. Guarantee it looks and probably works better than my ghetto blanket setup too. You're getting excellent cooling out of your unit, I suspect the reason I didn't was because my place is really old and poorly insulated. The window seals are gone, the attic insulation is packed down etc etc. Thank you kindly for sharing your experience with it.
      How do you find the noise from it? Noticeable or ok? Just curios if I was overly sensitive. Just bought a Tosot and it's much quieter but it was 35% more expensive...

    Purchased: August 2022 - still works GREAT! th-cam.com/users/postUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn I live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install.This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment.I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

    My conclusion having one of these myself, it is so GD loud! But I am cooling a space smaller than what the maximum recommended square footage is, not 100 over and it’s cold. Starts at 84 degrees inside my place and 76 degrees outside, in little time the temp is down to 75 inside and can take it below 70 over a few hours. Always cool less space with AC not more, otherwise you just overheat the unit, stressing to premature failure.

    Thanks for this Review! .. and Hello from a Fellow Calgarian... Man.. the HEAT... gross...
    anyhow... i have the UPPER SCALE model of exact Brand.. i had the 500 Square foot... Garbage..
    then i got the 700 Sq ft model... GARBAGE....
    NOISE.... holeeeeee... and .. in your vid.. your's seemed whisper quiet compared to mine.. (might just be how your mic etc set up.. cause. i DO believe you !!)
    mine has the deLonghi " whisper quiet technology " ... lol that is a joke...
    my ears actually HURT from the noise... the whisper quiet thing ( if its a thing ) only cuts in when it shuts down ( off ) lol
    and is has some sort of ECO-Real Feel thing.. another joke!
    = i KNOW Calgary is mad right now with heat.. but you think one of these would do at least SOME of what they say..
    my whole apt is under 600 Sq feet, and this unit i have is supposed to be for 700 ( amazon- the black unit )
    and i can only survive somewhat ' cool' temperature when i curtain off the living room ( 10 x 14 feet ) and thats with ALL the one window blocked off from ANY sunlight and it vented outside... and covered the tubing like you have ( smart guy! ) and its still ridiculous... and in order to sleep with it.. i have to wear EAR PLUGS!!
    -totally returning mine...
    - im so sick of companies with their " CLAIMS" of stuff working...This is why i almost ALWAYS shop at Amazon cause at least you can return almost Hassle Free All the time !
    thanks for the review.. and hope you guys get to cool off soon too!
    supposed to Rain today.. man.. i am doing the Rain dance! hehe Cheers!

      Thanks for the comment, much appreciated!! Awesome you're from Calgary too, so you get it completely, this heat wave is unreal. Super gross heat brother. Been in Calgary a long time and this is the most intense it's ever been.
      Good to know the other models are just as bad and you found it to be super noisy as well. You are absolutely right my lav mic actually made it seem way quieter than it is...nice when something (the mic) works properly as advertised ha ha! I figured no one would probably see the video so I didn't mention it in the editing that the mic cut down on the noise. I had to sleep with ear plugs as well and returned this one to Walmart today...the Tosot 700sqft one I ordered from Costco just arrived today. Seems quieter but don't have to use it right now thanks to that wicked storm that just rolled through! This new one was $250 more but it's worth it to be able to sleep and watch tv with the ac on!
      Yeah man, absolutely. All the reviews on the Delonghi I read said it was great...my ass! So frustrating when the claims and reviews are bogus. That's why I made this review, it works better than nothing I guess...but like you said you have to block off all sunlight for it to work at all.
      Anyways thanks again for taking the time to leave that comment and your experience with it too, really appreciate it! Hope we can save other people the hassle and disappointment of buying this thing and then having to return it. Hope you find a decent unit before the next heat wave and are able to stay cool man. Have a good one! -Jamie

    You purchased the wrong model - the one you want is a EX100. It's the most efficient, quietest model they make. Not quite as great as the LG dual inverter portable but it's the best Pinguino available.

      @MAMreviews69  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome thank you so much for that I ended up returning this one but it's almost heat Wave season here again so I'll be looking into the one you recommended that I can't see the name of right now because the reply window is blocking it thank you so much for the comment really appreciate it hope you have an awesome day!

      @@MAMreviews69 My pleasure. If you're in the states, get the LG dual inverter portable. In the UK/ EU it's the Delonghi Pinguino EX100 only. None of the other models are as efficient (630 Watts).

    "I know what you might be thinking, this guy's an idiot." Honestly, after listening to him, seeing his place and his jackleg setup I came to that exact conclusion. However, since almost all idiots have no clue they're idiots and this guy apparently does, I just can't say for sure one way or the other.

    He's wrong, my em370 is keeping my 450 sq feet room cold, I insulated my 2 1/2 windows in my bedroom, insulated my exhaust hose with a pair of thinsulated sweat pants, cut off the leg part and placed them over the hose, and no heat escape from the hose, and I run this EM370 on 70 degrees allday and night on a hot humid day and the thermometer in my room reads 70. When it arrived, ups had it laying on it side, idiots!!!! I waited a week before I took it out of the box and hook it up just to be on the safe side, being on it side can ruining the unit.

  • @grettagip
    @grettagip 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dude. I know it's hot, but.....Pants. Please. BTW, I have a Delonghi and it started leaking buckets of water when the summer humidity hit. No good in the South.

    • @MAMreviews69
      @MAMreviews69  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      🤣🤣 man I'm so surprised you're the first person who commented on the short shorts. Oh dude the same thing happened to me it leaked so much water onto the hardwood floor in my bedroom and warped the living s*** out of the wood it overflowed a 4 l container I had it draining into in like a couple hours it was unbelievable and that is in Calgary where the humidity is super low I can't imagine what would happen in the south....

    • @grettagip
      @grettagip 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MAMreviews69 Also, if you tried calling DeLonghi customer service you get some flippant rep who blames leakage on the humidity and then tries rushing you off the phone. Uh, humidity is one of the things you need addressed in an a/c unit, so thanks a lot (not)! No help there, but thanks for your $$$$ :-/ This year I bought a window a/c that handles the humidity and works like a charm! Sorry about the damage you were dealt with DeLonghi.
