- Learn vocabulary to talk about the news. This week we discuss recycling our mobile phones. Typically, people associate greenhouse gases with cars, planes, perhaps homes. But the EU says half of all emissions, and more than 90% of species loss, are caused by extracting and processing resources. The European Commission wants items such as smartphones, that rely on these resources, to last longer and to be easier to repair.
Vocabulary:
throwaway
made to be used for a short time and then disposed of
• They say we live in a throwaway society. Nothing is built to last.
• Our throwaway culture means people don’t know how to fix things.
spell the end of
indicate that something will stop happening
• Coronavirus may spell the end of foreign travel for a while.
• Audio streaming spelt the end of the CD.
root
origin; cause
• Overpopulation is the root of the climate crisis.
• Drug addiction is the root of the knife crime problem.

BBC is the best way to learn English. Trust me.
We sometimes become sheeple as purchasing trend things which we might not need, for instance, new clothes, new mobile phones, ... That throwaway cultures could lead to wastes and pollution.
👍
Could you add subtitles for this kind of videos?

Oh mine, I re-watched this and felt like something isn't normal here... then I found out I've adapted with the new normal, the way you've recorded your videos since the lockdown, so the normality became abnormality now. :)
happy to see u safe☺dont forget to wash your hands as often as u can n keep social distancing ☺greetings from Algeria
Every day lesson make my tongue fluency in English i like both of you. ..
then should I use ‘spell the end of’ as the opposite meaning of ‘usher in’?
I knew roots means but tackle l had to find the meaning!
THROW AWAY
Sometimes people throw away something good for something better only to find out later that good was actually good enough and better never even came close
That's right. All that glitters is not gold - just because something is new and shiny, it does not mean it is better than what you currently have.
i need eng sub
We only have one dear Earth and it may be a time to let Earth take a rest.
So if one could invent a new device which may be as strong as NOKIA 3310, this would definitely prolong the lifespan of smartphone for at least 15 years. This could very possibly deal with the root of the climate change and spell the end of unnecessary squander.
Nail how are you? I like you.💚❤🧡✔✔
Both of you are in social distance.😁 #Corana

I always love your videos.
People are still arguing about the root of the Coronavirus and the cure which can spell the end of this pandemic might not be available this year. During this crisis, ordinary people are advised to dispose face mask after daily use, which contributes more to our throwaway culture.
Awesome it helps me for inhancing my listening skill thanks for them
The manner of stashing useless stuff at home is much popular in the post-Communist countries, where people weren't allowed to buy a property and keep a net worth. I live in Russia and see many people hooked on that. My friend keeps a huge amount of things which are quite affordable for buying. Despite that, his apartment looks like someone launched what appeared to be a missile directly at his room. I never had an understanding of that, it must have been just a force of bad habit.
What a lovely day with reviewing the news together. It is an uplifting, practical and insightful learning English program for english and non-english speakers. Keep on reviewing! Oh, one more thing, I need to say "thank you" to you all wonderful presentation, explanation and up to date news sharing. Thank you, thank you and thank you.
Indian prime minister ,Mr modi , has started to tackle the root of indian culture as a part of reformation of modern culture as the current throwaway culture invite a lot of armageddons. In order to do that the old culture spell the end of current way of living
We use so many precious minerals for our phones. Try to hold on to them as long as possible! Thanks for this video. The style really inspires me for my channel!
Can you fix 💰Greed?😛
Who wants to practice English
I have been using my iPhone 5s for years. And now I even can't remember when I bought it!!!
💈Some people butter up you when they need something from you. They are throwaway friends.
💈 The tick tock of the clock spells the end of the exams.
💈 The root of many divorces is the difference of cultures
i'm happy to see both of you 💙, BBC news is a part of my life
To me too! BBC news is parf of my studies.
Thanks. I think I'm learning English with you!
Headlines always up to date I really like it. And the way that both of you explain is very easy.
You two speak too much causally. I request both of you to remember that we're non-native listeners.
This video realised me that we should not follow throw away culture and help to save environment.
There was a issue with audio and test link. Could you pls check? Thanks

Ooo English is comlpicated language
Hello to both of you
First and foremost, thanks a lot for continuing your lessons in these troubled times.
I hope one day our society will put an end to our consumerist society. Anyway. We must awake.
Look after yourselves. Best Regards.
Dear Catherine and Neil
It's always a pleasure to follow your audio and video.
Thank a lot for your focus on English language
Take care
Cheers from Italy
Thousands of thanks for making easier to catch the meaning! All explanations are quite sticky and memorable. The root of throwavay culture is human greediness. Humanity can spell the end for damaging the environment by taking small steps, like recycling and reusing products

Use and throwaway has so many synonyms

I expect after, if there is going to be an after, that the governments, institutions and above all us, Learn to appreciate life in all its forms and to evaluate deeply, the role of an economy based on industrialisation and consumerism and having us as the main and loyal supporters of each unnecessary item or product launched into the market, as I see it now, we basically required products for household cleaning and personal care; as well as food, mainly healthy food. Definitely we have to re-evaluate our ways of behaving and thinking so, we can use this time to reflect in how to change our attitudes in this damaging process of offer and demand, that is causing to the world a lamentable and irreversible effect. Some people are only thinking of how recovering economy through the support of manufacturing industry, it’s so disgusting; think first in assessing the function and contribution of each industry in this chain of environmentally damaging events, that ultimately is leading us to extinction. It’s me learning english, and trying to survive here in Bogotá.
Hindi is more popular than any language on this globe. So teach Hindi as well.
I've learnt a great deal about daily problems through this video. I think they have been greatly dedicated to the programme and the audiences. I hope you guys can keep up the good work and remain youthful and energetic like this.
